Free Agency Brandon Ellis [Signs for Gold Coast, Richmond receive #39 compensation]

Its the sad reality. Any team who can convince a FA to head the the GC should do so. With their situation, the offer is going to be 25% higher than it needs to be.
Seriously GCS is VFL feeder club, if GCS shut down VFL club won't get Prestia, Lynch, Caddy, May, o meara, Scrimshaw . WA club won't get pick 2 and multiple second round pick from GCS, Brisbane won't get Lyons and multiple first, second and third Rd pick from GCS.

Well done to him.

One of those players that only looks good in a good team; he's soft as butter. Will be exposed massively having to be an on-field leader at a club like GC. Awesome work by him and his manager to con GC into giving him 5 years.
Soft as butter? Isn't that just the Essendon game plan? ;)

Have overpaid but he will play 22 games and hold down a wing. But we need to overpay at the moment to get established talent. Hopefully once we move up the ladder we won't need to pay above market wage.

This is great for Ellis and Richmond.

Not sure whether I can call a win yet for Sun's but not terrible for them.
Well its certainly not a loss

If Ellis was going to get $450k a year then everybody would be saying great get for them and experience role model etc
does the $150k difference really make that much difference to his impact to the team or his playing ?

Doesnt cost the suns a thing as in draft picks and they were paying Martin more so In/Out similar but they get a pick for Martin

I don't like that language. It's not an offer. It's a Form 41 and Ellis has already agreed to those terms.

The only thing on offer is the Suns offering Richmond the chance to match it
I guess it's a conditional offer, conditional on whether or not Richmond match it?

I'd be interested to see how he goes up there. Part of me thinks he'll go terribly because he doesn't win his own ball.

It's intriguing the arguments as to what Ellis is worth.

Originally pick 15...since then

170+ games
Best 22 in the currently dominant side
2x Premiership player
Regarded as a good character to have around the club both on and off the field.
Regarded has being an excellent trainer with a strong work ethic.

Now entering his prime and new club will likely get 5/6 years and 100+ games out of him.

Why should his value have gone down?

In addition wrt. to Free Agency, I'm in there should be no compensation at all camp (for any free agents) , but in the existing system pick 20 is about right.

We win the ball ok with Swallow, Miles, Miller, Brodie and now hopefully Greenwood. Our massive problem is distribution because we just hack it forward, hopefully brining in Ellis gives us someone to run up and down Metricon and hit targets in our forward line.

I see your point, but it's a formality.

You’ll be sadly disappointed then. Ellis has strengths but quality distribution is not one of them.

It's funny that Ellis is regarded as a "fringe player" when he's played the most games of any player taken in the 2011 draft. Only played less than 20 games in a season once in his career.

Yep, you can overpay now and then when your new high draft picks start demanding bigger coin all of these deals should be over or at least mostly paid out in the front end of them.

There is no doubting he is not worth $600k x 5 years , If the deal was $450k x 5 years everybody would think yes its about right and great get for Gold coast

In a team that has $13 million TPP available having to pay $150k a year over means nothing for a team that is desperate to get quality players that want to go there.

People are just salty due to tigers getting a decent compo

I just love it when media speculate $600K and people run with it like a gospel. What if it's $500 or 100K is ambassador money or the year 5 is incentives based? FWIW, Weller is ambassador and there was a speculation that his salary is $450K + $150K ambassador. No idea if numbers are true.

Regarding compensation again people mention all these rational seasons based on speculated contract. If anything according to compensation rules AFL committee reserves right to change the results of the secret formula as they no doubt did on several occasions. I would be very surprised if Tigers get pick 20.

um what? They are certainly better with his experience and skills. Is it overs? Sure, but I don't think they mind paying a bit extra to have more experience in the team.
