Free Agency Brandon Ellis [Signs for Gold Coast, Richmond receive #39 compensation]

We win the ball ok with Swallow, Miles, Miller, Brodie and now hopefully Greenwood. Our massive problem is distribution because we just hack it forward, hopefully brining in Ellis gives us someone to run up and down Metricon and hit targets in our forward line.
Yeah that's what you will get. His strength is he runs all day and gets into good spaces. Knows where to run

Probably right outcome but how the AFL got there is a joke. The whole secret formula is bulls**t

Exactly, the process is a joke.

But yeah I reckon on the open market Ellis would be going for pick 30 - 35. So it's no biggie

Buddy compo for 9 years $10 million was pick 19.

Tell me again how Ellis' compo should be pick 19? almost half the years and half the money.
because Hawthorn finished 1st that year, like Richmond.
It's not that hard to get is it?

No issue with this compensation in isolation but when you consider what Geelong got for Motlop I think Richmond have a legitimate case to ask questions of the AFLs process

It gets on my nerves because we had to rebuild through the GC and GWS wankathon. We were so bad for so long we didnt get any help and actually got reamed by the AFL's wet dream to expand. Just either have some transparent rules or dont have these picks.

Well we ended up with 2 of GCs best player's, and beat GWS in finals for both flags. Cant complain too much with how that worked out. We have clearly been screwed with this decision, but Picket, Stack and Lynch for free last year, we will get by.

Its not pick 39 that’s the issue

It’s that it’s one rule for some clubs and another for us. It’s a fu**en joke

Gilligan and his incompetent offsiders need to be boned. Watch the knives come for him next week

You just won the flag a week ago ? Why so angry ?? Sheesh

It's the lack of transparency by the AFL that is most frustrating.
You could also argue that Band 1 should be middle of first round. That way both Buddy & Frawley compo would have been say pick 10, still not 100% fair but better than what happened.
It is hard to see how Ellis became Band 3 compared to Lycett, Rockliff, Motlop all Band 2. As I read it they must have all been in the top 15% of average annual salary for players 25 or over. Rockliff well inside the top 15% as he would have slipped due to his age.
This year, Brandon's suggested salary of $600 000 (plus a boost for his age) doesn't put him in the top 15% of wage earners? Have the number of top end salaries increased that much since last year and the year before?
Some transparency from the AFL would be nice....

Maybe the compensation they’ve allocated is actually a direct result of the AFL dishing out incorrect picks on the basis of the contracts on offer.

Still relatively early the piece for free agency, and there was always going to be a teething period while they work out all the macchinations of pick compo.

I think it’s far better to come back to an accurate evaluation of a players true value on the open market.
I hope not. Otherwise it’s changing rules on the fly.
I’m ok with the compo.
$600k x 5 years isn’t end of first round compo. The AFL have made that clear now. Issues arise because they keep their formula secret - hopefully from here on in it’s clear.

As others have said, it's not pick 39 that's the issue. On the open market that's reasonable. It's the dodgyness of the formula and the making it up as they go along.

Hmmmm, Richmond are great right now, we can't top them up with too many comoditiies they could use to get stronger so instead of pick 20 which we might have given to a struggling club in the same contract variables and based on other players, the "formula" gives us 39.

Tbh when Franklin got 19 and Frawley got much earlier, that should have been the red light for anyone with a brain to scrap this compensation system.

It was, but only hawthorn fans were up in arms, so every other club who'd been headf#+*$ed by hawthorn said it was us whinging and to suck it up

Motlop compo killed free agency for everyone, once again the AFL screwed with the system to get adequate Gold Coast compo for losing Ablett and now it's as broken as ever.

Frawley earning pick 3 is another embarrassment from their secret formula.

The AFL is a joke

Personally I am really happy because i thought Ellis was a bit of a list blocker but from the bigger picture perspective any sense of professionalism or proper rules seem to go out of the window in the afl and the ellis deal was another example.

Its a bit of shame the sport is run in such a manner, who knows how the future will unfold with similar player movements.

Many were laughing at hawthorn because it was funny but still acknowledged the afl is a very stupid corrupt and amateur like system of administration at the time.

Mayne, Wells, Vickery were $500k a year offers, which was a 2nd round compensation pick. Perhaps $600k is the new $500k considering salaries have now all gone up.

Maybe was for 4 years on lower salary
Vicjery only a 2 year deal
Wells was 30 year old (waite didnt get a compo at that age)

Best examples of like for like is Lycett - Band 2
similar is motlop with 100k less and 1 year less - Band 2

The AFL did supposedly adjust their compensation formula after the Frawley fiasco to make it harder for a player to earn a band 1 compensation pick. There is the chance that they've changed it again.

I think the compensation system has always been more about equalisation than it has been about fairly compensating clubs for their players. From this standpoint it makes sense that if Ellis was playing for Gold Coast, they would've received ~pick 20 for him, yet Richmond receive pick 39.

We're always going to have these issues with discrepancies in compensation when the figures we base our opinions on are the ones reported in the media. The media probably gets given their information from player agents who are always going to maximise the amount the player has gotten because it reflects better on them. This will include convenient wording of salary, giving the salary of the first year if it's a front ended contract, or including all incentives in the figure regardless of how realistic they are.

Also according to this article from The Age, years of a contract only acts as a tiebreaker and has significantly less impact than the per year base salary.

I always thought that the Vickery compensation was too generous looking at it purely from a picks perspective. If you combine the two, Picks 26 and 39 for Vickery and Ellis doesn't seem too unfair.
