Traded Bryce Gibbs [traded to Adelaide] - (cont. in Part 2)

Jarman played in one of the best teams of all time, in probably the greatest era of club making superstars from nothing.

Gibbs has played at one of the most disfunctional clubs of recent times with a very poor track record in player development.

Yes, Gibbs hasn't lived up to expectations, but I suggest that a large part of that is due to his surrounds.

I think if he went to Port or Hawthorn, IMO he would become an All-Australian.
Partly because he was in it.

Jarman a better player than Gibbs no doubt.

Just making the point that Gibbs has played in a bad Carlton team with an awful recent track record in player development and therefore that Gibbs could still meet his potential at a better club.

Jarman is a great of the game. Dunstall says of Jarman that on his day he was the best player he's played with.

I have never ever thought Gibbs would come to Port. I have always thought he was a possibility to go to Adelaide if they threw the kitchen sink at him.

It all depends on Gibbs mind set. To me he has been a bit of a disappointing footballer. He has talent but he's never progressed to an out and out A grader. I don't really rate Carlton's list and I don't think they'll be challenging for a flag any time soon. So what does Gibbs do? Stay with Carlton and waste his remaining years, just keep on receiving his sizable pay cheque and never actually achieve any team or personal success, or does he look further afield. He is now in his prime footballing years. What is the best option for him?

As I said before, I think he will probably stay with Carlton, but if the Crows come a knocking with a huge deal, he might say yes to that. But if he wants success, maybe Port is increasingly the option he really should be considering.

never really thought about carlton's problems with player development much before but the earlier posts were right
carlton have really struggled in this regard and gibbs has suffered
if he had been recruited by the eagles or the cats he would absolutely be a more professional player today able to run out games and get his own footy more

I wonder if it is a bit too late to turn him around in that sense... he is an outside player now and a new club could help with his fitness but not turn him into a crawford or anything too extreme

certainly not worth $700k
but GWS will probably pay it

I think the crows would have more $$ to pay Gibbs than GWS, plus GWS midfield is already good no real need for gibbs.
CRows number 1 focus is to retain Dangerfiled, then sign Gibbs.
If Crows lose Dangefield to a vic club, e.g a team like Essendon in flag contention, then you would think that the crows would get Gibbs.

Hot mail is that Gibbs prefers Port over Adelaide if push came to shove.

Smart move but a bit of a strange one considering his family's allegiance to Adelaide.

Just like Sidebottom was coming to Carlton? Despite him saying he's no chance to leave Collingwood on Sunday.

When has he not been able to run out games? He's certainly no Jack Ziebell

Being able to get his own footy is not a problem either as seen by his finals performances last year where he got 18 contested possessions against Richmond and 10 against the swans.

Well said, completely different levels those two.

If Gibbs has 3 or 4 good years he might get somewhere near Ziebell

Not defending JZ - agree he doesn't run out games
but if you think Gibbs' fitness, toughness and overall contribution to the team is anywhere near where it needs to be to earn $700k then good luck to you

I just can’t see Gibbs coming to Port. We would take him if he were to adamantly declare he wanted to play for us but I can’t see Port bending over backwards to get him.

Gibbs doesn’t really fill a need for us. We have a fair few crisp outside ball users and I doubt the club would want to ruffle any feathers by all of a sudden recruiting a player that doesn’t fit a need and would be on more $$$ then the players who have worked so hard to get us in a position where we have a chance to be successful.

If he were to come to port he would be our 7-8th most important player and would be paid accordingly. Which you would think would mean taking a paycut. If he’s willing to do that I think we would have him in a heartbeat but it seems very unlikely to me.

The crows I imagine will have some $$$ in the salary cap and at the moment are losing the PR battle in SA. I could see them putting a very lucrative offer to the Gibbs camp and ultimately that’s where I see him ending up.

Good call.

I'd rate Ebert & Hartlett as better players than Gibbs (based on output, Gibbs may have a higher ceiling it could be argued), and they similar roles to Gibbs, and they're younger.

Port's midfield will shortly be regarded as one of the best in the comp you'd reckon. A taller player in the mould of Mundy/Pendles would be handy. What's happened to Moore?

Why would Port want Gibbs?

People are throwing around numbers like $500k, $600k, $700k. Port have players better earning less.

If I was say, Ollie Wines or Robbie Gray or Jackson Trengove and Gibbs came in and was suddenly the 2nd or 3rd highest paid player at the club I would more inclined to look at options outside Port Adelaide than I otherwise would be.

If Gibbs wants $500k+ then his best bet is to stay at Carlton or try and get a gig with GC/GWS. If he wants to play for Port his manager will need to sell to the club what role he could fill and to the player that he's realistically going to be in the 6-10 bracket of best players and will be paid as such.

I don't know where Adelaide are 'at', but you'd hope they'd be more sensible than to spend big dollars on Bryce Gibbs.

They gave a 28 year old small forward 600k per year for 4 years. Says where Adelaide are at.

Exactly. You could have a pi$$ing contest with other supporters about Gibbs > Hartlett / Ebert but at the end of the day those 2 are already at Port and playing their role. No need to get them offside by headhunting a similar player & giving him a better contract etc.

Moore copped a knock in a trial (against St kilda i think) and is still fighting his way back. The reports were that he was having a belter pre-season (doesn't everyone) but there was great hope he would take his game to the next level this year. Still time obviously but unless injuries hit he is probably going to spend a few weeks in the SANFL.

I'm hopeful that he might get it together about the midway point then come in over the final weeks and make a real impact for us similar to what Aaron Young did for us last year.

Andrew Mckay has suggested that the compensation pick for Gibbs will most likely be a second rounder, perhaps end of first round at best. Not sure what the Blues will do.

I have it on good authority that if the season ended today gibbs would be a port Adelaide player tomorrow. as the lance franklin saga showed things can change quickly but that's where it stands at the present time.
