Oppo Camp Caleb Poulter (Bulldogs MSD 2023)

19 years old, first game for the season, played pretty well in a shitstorm, and people are lining up to declare his career over?

Go away from this place. Go on, take your tears of bitterness elsewhere.

Typical after a Loss that every player is a Dud and needs to get De-Listed according to quite a few posters on here

Poulter has plenty to offer and we just need to get games into him

With Steele looking a yard off it these days, and Josh getting towelled up the last two games, we could do worse than give him a run. Also, WHE for all his natural athleticism and talent just does not impact games enough.

Unfortunately, Poulter hasn't got a famous father or he'd have about 5 or 6 years and 70 games to prove himself. The thing that I like about him, compared to say Callum Brown, is that he picks up the ball....he can kick more than 40 metres... he doesnt drop the ball every time that hes' under pressure. There are so many players ahead of him to get moved on, that we would have to clear half the list to see him gone.

Unfortunate but true

Didn’t think he was ready but circumstances conspired to give him a game anyway. Now that he’s in the side, he should be persevered with. Has enough tools to make it. At a minimum, projects to be Tom Phillips MkII.

Nor does it take a hindsight hero to work out whatever our pick was gonna be was absorbed by daicos.

2 firsts for beams was worse but then again 1 pick was gonna disappear for Q but our pick that year was 17 if I’m recalling correctly
It was a really valuable, highly tradeable commodity which we sold for an extremely low price, even if we had a decent season and it ended up being pick 12, we sold it for well unders.

Poulter projects to a range that would include being as good as or better than Tom Phillips but his bottom range is well below Tom. He has a lot of work to do to be as good as Tom and its far from certain. Our 2020 group is tracking well but they wont all turn into best 22s. Poulter hasnt done enough yet to be certain he becomes a longer term player.

Plus the game has changed a bit with teams protecting the outside better and one paced outside endurance beasts aren't finding the ball as easily

Phillips was Drafted as an Overager so he was more Ready then Poulter. Missing half the VFL Season also did not help because of Covid.

Phillips is not even certain best 22 at Hawthorn.

Could say Ginnivan is the only one from the Draft Class that looks anything like Certain long term player at AFL Level

What are Poulter’s tools?

I don’t understand the bull market on Poulter. He has good height but no size to speak of. Average pace (and I do mean average, as in, not a weapon but not slow either). Can kick long but a bit floaty, so perhaps average-to-above kicking. Movement through traffic is average-to-below. Overhead marking is just good, aided by his height. Running capacity is ok.

I think Poulter would need to significantly improve in multiple areas to make it. He has no standout attributes that I can see. Mind you, he’s solid in multiple areas and I absolutely agree he’s worth persisting with, but I think he has a ceiling of “good foot soldier” and not the weapon I keep hearing he can become.

I'm very confident with Ginnivan. I'm pretty confident that Reef and Henry will be players. Probably Mcreery. No idea about Macmahon. Unconfident with Macrae. Agnostic with Poulter. It looks well above par for those picks at this stsge

I reckon he has at least Solid Ball Use - Has Good Endurance as runs all day - Has X-Factor - Kicked some Game Winning Goals at VFL Level - Can Lay a Tackle for a Skinny Kid

Sounds like we should De-List him at Years end going what you Posted and Macrare might also be in Trouble

BLS World Wide Not crying over spilt milk. Just pointing out that it was a terrible trade.

Personally I always saw it as an arse protecting short term PR move. Fans were up in furore over trade week, so they wanted to sell the positive story of 5 picks in the top 31 - a story that got a surprising number of buyers - some still buy it...

Beams trade was Worse then that one

Nah. They misjudged and thought the Beams trade might get a premiership. It had potential. There's no way any of them thought this one was a good football transaction - it was pr.

They Rated Poulter very Highly then though we did trade down to get more Picks.

This Trade still has Potential with McMahon and Poulter still at the Club

Yep. It might work out well. But trading pick 1 in a straight swap for pick 12 might work out due to the uncertainty of the draft.

And did they rate Poulter hugely? If they did they took a bloody big risk trading the pick down 5 spots and giving other teams a crack at him.

We would had to use the Pick on Daicos as North would not had allowed us a Free Pick at 2

They Rated Poulter Highly but heard other clubs where Rating him as High

Another boy I had high hopes for but he seems to be very vanilla at this stage as do almost all of our young kids. You cannot keep saying give them time. Most players will improve their game in time but I've been looking for a couple of eye catching types who set the heart a flutter and we don't have any. Ginnivan the exception.
Number 35. Is numero uno in that regard. By the length of the Flemington straight

I'm not too worried that it became pick 2, that was the worst case scenario and I don't expect them to have valued it at that when they sold it. But it was a shit trade because under no realistic evaluation was that close to a par value trade. GWS would have been euphoric when that deal went down.

But I don't see why North would have done anything different. If we kept the pick rather than trading into this year before the draft and they nominated Daicos to swallow our pick, we would have just traded it into this year's draft and some other club would have used the pick. No change for them.
