No they can’t.

Even at their lowest there was an understanding across the industry that Carlton was still a “big club” with all the bells and whistles that come along with that.

Carlton’s big club status essentially saved their rebuild by bringing in Saad, Williams, Cerra, Hewett.

North don’t have the same allure to players.

They’re still playing 3 (or 4?) games in Tassie and playing in front of small crows at Marvel.

Read the other day that the club can’t even give their players parking spots or permits to park their cars.

North will always have an uphill battle in terms of attracting talent at other clubs, whether through trades or free agency.

They just need to attract a wealthy member of society to have representation on their board, who happens to also have a business that can hire half the North Melbourne squad for work outside of footy entirely unrelated to their employment at the football club but that affords them extra cash every year they happen to be at the footy club.

Sad but true and thats why those second rounder compos that everyone knew had to be traded netted us bugger all. Logue who did an ACL excluded, sigh. Any bigger club wouldve made way from those picks than we did for the very reasons you say.

On Gettable, Cal said re Zurhaar that he "still thinks there's an openness to potentially go back to WA if the right offers and interest is there." Is that as close to saying "Zurhaar is a chance to come WA" as anybody reliable in media has come to saying? I feel like previous noise on that subject came to as good as saying "if Zurhaar leaves, he's staying in Vic."

I feel like the quantity of interested - and willing to pay up - suitors is diminishing game by game in 2024.

Love to know the deal North have on the table for him

They are in a really awkward position
  • Offer him unders $600k he walks and takes $650k-$700k from another club , Do North match and pay him $700k x 5/6
  • Offer $800k with the hope another team offers $900k and get a 1st round compo ? if no takers then again get stuck with big $$ in the cap

Will any WA club pay him $900k ?
maybe eagles but dont think they need him as they have similar fowards

There is no way Zurhaar is worth $900k or even $800k.

But given the money reported to be thrown at Haywood, nothing would surprise me.

Agree

If Hayward is getting offers at 850k/6 years, Zurhaar probably will as well.

I think Hayward would have a few more suitors, which would push up his price.

I haven’t heard many rumours or read much reporting into a clubs chasing Zurhaar. Norths and WC? May be Freo? I’m not sure if one else would be keen.

Hayward is MASSIVLEY overrated at 850k a year. So is Zurhaar but less so. Swans are on the money at 500k ish a year.

I'd take Zurharr at the same price any day of the week, in a good team with good support Zurhaar would be a lot better than what Hayward is. If that makes sense.

You have to remember that the new collective bargaining agreement, combined with the salary cap floor means that the average wage is going up. $750k for an average experienced player is the new $600k.

Although, I think $850k is well over for Haywood, it’s probably what a lower performing club like Adelaide has to pay to get a RFA out of Sydney, as it essentially pays off the player and the club. I highly doubt that Sydney’s offer would be in the $500k range, unless they are deliberately “shopping” him around.

The issue with Zurhaar is he isn’t setting the world on fire at a lower performing club, that’s why it doesn’t surprise me that he may have lesser interest.

Zurhaar’s contract will be interesting to watch. As I said previously, there hasn’t been too much reporting on specific club’s offers to Zurhaar, other than “he is likely to leave”. But it is still early in the season.

North can afford to pay him overs. Front load his contract so it doesn’t affect re-signing the younger guns later.

Anything less is disrespectful and means they don’t want to keep him.

In regards to the player, if there’s a contract like the one I’ve described on the table and he doesn’t sign it, well he’s checked out of the joint and he’s obviously leaving for more money. Which is a shame seeing how he called out the loyalty of JHF when he requested a trade. He’d be showing inconsistent values.

Best thing for North to do is offer him a decent contract and make sure the media hear there’s one on the table. The ball is then solely in the players court.

Best result for both club and player will be he signs back on at the Kangas.

If you read that information about the parking spots from Code Footy on FB, I wouldn't even bother. 'The story goes .....blah blah blah ' The author was just making up bits and pieces and claiming it to be truth. Just goes to show ... these days you can put what ever nonsense down in an article and you're guaranteed to have at least 50% of the readers, if not more, lapping it up and taking it as the gospel truth. Anything passes as truth these days, even fabricated BS!

I've never been that keen but I'm so over our forwardline I'd give anything for someone with forward talent under 190cm. I'd actually be annoyed if we haven't at least seen if he wants to join because like McKay you expect he'll be better at a different club.

Feels a bit yuck picking over the North carcass though, I genuinely feel for you guys at the moment

If Freo does have genuine interest it would explain a lot about his current form.
He is giving off Ben Mckay vibes at the moment.

Statistically he's bang on his career.

Do you play fantasy football or super coach or a combination of the two?
Average player keeps being average isn't a sign he's got a new deal under his nose. 🤷‍♂️
