we could do with more youth, not only to add to what we have but as necessary replacements now and the next few years as our team changes, we have decided to go into this draft with decent position especially if we decide to trade next years first to get into the late first or early 2nd this year and potentially get 3 or 4 players in the strike zone of this years draft with an NGA of good quality next year

we also were lucky with some late picks in recent drafts, to have a decent amount of youth imo, as i've said before our 23 and unders are looking of good quality which is good for us

Hardwick is a star back pocket imo
Worpel is already showing high quality talent imo
Nash is a limited player but could be a good squad player with great athleticism for a big man
Scrimshaw is surprisingly good talent, he has shown more toughness than i thought he had previous to coming to the Hawks, i think he will be a good player for us
Lewis is showing signs of being a solid tall forward that can potentially be that 40-60 goal a year forward in future

i have high hopes for Walker, Koschitzke and Ross, all untested, so not players we can add to that guaranteed group above.

i think if we get a decent youngster at 11 and Maginness with another with our first pick in 2020 traded in we could be looking ok imo, with Downie a 1st/2nd rounder next year coming in also potentially?, its not looking too gloomy like i was worried about 12 months ago...

And Wells passed. 3 times.

fancy taking Tim Kelly over worps, madness

Maginness looks a good fit for Richmond imo

They passed over a ready made Selwood replacement. The biggest stuff up since Varcoe missed the shot to tie the match in the 2013 prelim!

Talk about a slice off the right. Why he let the ball bounce I will never know...but always thank him for.

They can, they seem to have been able to take some absolute steals at later points in the draft with guys like James Worpel. I do however feel that sooner or later it could catch up to them and bite them in the arse.

So what that means s##t to me again.

Tigers 24 and under are not much chop. How many in this years B&F were in the Tigers top 6? ZERO.

Hawks 2019 B&F had 4 of its top 6 were 24 and under.

Once Edwards, Cotchin, Jack, Rance, Houli and co start slowing down which is just around the corner .... the cliff is coming. This makes sense with the equalisation system in place and given the small number of elite draft picks Tigers have had at its disposal in recent times.

With the Hawks recent list transition from a three peat, they have bottomed out and will be on the way up again.

This is delusional. Hawthorn haven't bottomed out post 3-peat you have mid-tabled. Bottoming out and rebuilding through the draft was what you did in the early 2000s which went a long way to launching your success from 2008 onward.

People that think that Clarko is delusional are the ones delusional ..... if he is optimistic that the Hawks will challenge again in the next couple years so am I!

In 2012-15 the core came from the early picks in the 2001 and 2004 drafts. I see no one at all is disputing this.

Thats a 14 year spread 2001 to 2015. The latter half being much more successful than the first seven years

In 2020-2023 the core has come from early picks in the 2011 draft (Patton O'meara Wingard Mitchell) along with O'Brien /2012 Impey Sicily/2013 Hardwick/2015 Scrimshaw Lewis/2016 Worpel/2017

Theres half a dozen handy older players who'll be around a couple more years too

Theres no reason why the hawks cant maintain top line form till 2025 (14 years on), by which time they will have loaded up at five more draft and trade periods

I'm not disputing Clarkson's optimism or credentials, what I am argueing agienst is the notion that Hawthorn have bottomed out. The fact is that's not true, you have been in no man's land when it comes to performance and list building over the last few years.

The elite end of the draft contains high draft picks. It's said that high draft picks are the cornerstone to building a good list.

Both high draft picks and having a good list matter, but are overrated.

So the answer is 'yes'. Yes, Hawthorn can succeed while ignoring the elite end of the draft.

Maybe that is the bottom of this cycle for Hawthorn though

Average age and average games played have no correlation to future performance, if anything its better to be older, statistically at least.

What I'd like to see is an average games played with your current teammates, say your best 25 and whether there's any correlation with performance.

I have no idea how you'd find that info nor do I have the time to work it all out but the Hawks would be down the bottom end I would think.

It would be interesting to see for sure.
