Carlton’s soul exorcised, I am disappointed

the only thing that is logically inconsistent about your post is that its Melbourne that beat you. The modern day standard bearer for playing to lose.
I don't deny one bit the truth of what you wrote but I'd suggest Carlton's appalling drafting of late is as much to blame as anything that happened back then.
Oh, no question it's been our recruiting. But I think it's more with development; you look at Marc Murphy in his first and second year. He was fearless. He never used to squib it. Where's the Marc Murphy that would want to play on and put his body on the line after Copeland ruined his shoulder, and a brilliant first year? Where's that guy? We now have a captain who shirks responsibility, and embarrasses himself with dives that would make a soccer player proud.

I also think Malthouse is past it too.

I can't really blame Malthouse here. No other coach would be able to do better with our current state. When you have really soft players not adhering to instructions or doing the basic things because they are too lazy, it's really easy to blame the coach. It was the same with Ratten near the end, that Gold Coast game in particular. People were saying he lost the players, he has to go, etc. And now the very same people want him back. There's one constant - it's the players. If Menzel and Buckley can put in the effort and have the hunger to compete, what excuse do the senior players have? Definitely not the coach there.

We shouldn't be looking for draft picks. We should be playing the kids and trying to win every game we can. The mentality of putting in effort is going to do us better than an unknown teenager. Improvement will come from work ethic and a never say die attitude, not "well there goes the season, let's relax and try to get the highest pick we can".

Well I want us to persist with guys like Graham, Buckley and Cripps. None of them had good games although they had little to no support from our senior player. In the short term I would take the captaincy off Murphy. He simply isn't up to it.

Simpson should have been made captain from the start.

Tanking is being rewritten as claiming we did it for 5 years, we didn't.

We didn't tank any more than many other sides in the 2000s.

Problems are shit recruiting shot board shit development shit culture

Ratten didn't really instill any toughness in this team.

This is the best thing that has happened to the club since 2011. I can not stop smiling and looking forward to the changes with optimism.

Simpson goes in hard but his ability to lift his team mates is questionable. Not sure why we took it off Judd in the first place.
He's lifted them plenty of times. But as of this moment, even Voss in his heyday wouldn't be able to lift these sad sacks. Judd relinquished it, I believe.

What makes you think that the players would want to listen to the word of a miserable grumpy whinger like malthouse? If I were one of the players I'd take Ratten over that idiot any day. Malthouse has done nothing to earn the respect of the players, he's just waltzed in expecting to lord over the place when he's never cracked one smile or ever been anything other than condescending and arrogant. I wouldn't be half surprised if he resigns later this year if the poor form continues to save his face.

No he didn't but he did best at the cattle that was available to him. So he adopted a high-skill break neck speed type of system. It wasn't bad just wouldn't win us a flag. Malthouse adopted a list that played a high-skill break neck speed type of game to a slow game along the boundary. Was never going to work.

Judd's body must be a mess after all the hits he copped to lift this soft team.

I'd bloody take Maxwell in his prime over Murphy now.

Because he's a proven coach with a very good record, who is good at rebuilding teams. He's miserable? What the **** is this, high school? This is a professional environment, if the players don't like him because he is "grumpy" then they can sod off. That's not an excuse to be lazy and insipid, it is something a little league player would use as an excuse!

Your denial of tanking more than other clubs is flat out wrong.

You tanked so hard it ruined your culture. Thrawn was and always is right ...

Mick's strength is he is a relator. In his teams his players love him and that's the tool he uses to develop and inspire them.

I wonder whether he is too tired to fall in love with this team.

You learn in bloody Yr 11 Sports science that authoritarian coaches at pro level tend to work rather well.

You leave all that hugging and "playing for the fun of it" crap to the kids.
Those Authoritarian coaches also hug and have a great relationship with their players.

Look at Sir Alex for the definitive example of it.
