Watched the game, and Cody looks the laconic type, mostly an outside player.

Makes you wonder how hard he was actually trying.

Did some things that made you sit up and take notice for sure.

Looks a reasonable chance to be a 1st rounder at this stage with plenty to work with.

Tentatively agree, as much as I was hugely impressed with Cody's game yesterday, I did think he looked a little lacking in intensity at times, especially on the defensive side of his game. I imagine thats pretty common in u16s though to be fair and if that's my biggest nitpick then we are well placed.

Don't agree that hes mostly an outside player, his contest work was very good.

Think ud be hard pressed to find any 16 year old who plays with the intensity and aggression of an AFL player. That's a skill that needs to be learnt and refined, hence why it takes so long for rebuilding clubs to rebuild. Even players like JSOS and Kennedy years after their drafts struggled with applying themselves at the required intensity for AFL footy.

16s is much more about bursts and glimpses. Same could be said for 18s footy but obviously with a bit of a gap between the two in fitness and physicality.

Gary Ablett come to mind. Had all the tools, but took a good talking to before things really clicked.

Yep, plenty of examples. Either way I thought Cody looked spectacular yesterday. For a 16 year old he looked like he could have been playing in the 18s today without much issue.

yeah, not sure how much you could've asked for from him as a 15-16 year old. what he showed yesterday is all i wanted and more

By the way, final stats for the twins (courtesy of afl.com.au):

Ben: 15 kicks, 13 handballs (game high disposal count), 13 contested (equal game high), 7 marks (1 contested), 3 tackles, 5 clearances, 6 i50s, 5 score involvements

Lucas: 8 kicks, 4 handballs, 0 contested (!), 4 marks, 1 tackle, 0 clearances, 4 i50s, 4 score involvements

A tad yes. His traits really reminds me of Newman
Not a bad comparison..
From what I’ve noticed so far with Lucas his kicks are a little chipped, some are weighted well while others are giving the opposition opponent he kicks to an easier chance to defend the ball, i think he needs to punch his kicks flatter with more speed on them at times…
Has a good overall natural kicking technique, just needs a little tweaking, his decision making and execution can let him down too while in space under no pressure…

I have to disagree with you that intensity and aggression is learnt and defined, maybe with some players as they progress sure, but it really is something that is very much natural, it’s part of one’s DNA, they just possess it and its genetic makeup in the way they play…
These types of players in my time watching from the 70’s to the modern game are incredible, players that naturally put their bodies on the line in contests, no matter the outcome whether that’s contesting the ball, flying back into a contest to mark, back in flight to spoil, chase and tackle or to smother or block for your teammates…
This should be in every footballers DNA, if it was it would produce far more better player's just of the back of it, but we’re all built differently…

Blows my mind to see a 16 year old casually slot a goal from a 50M set shot. I played with a few 16 year olds who went on to play AFL and I can't remember any of them being able to do that at that age. Have times changed? Is that now normal? Just to make the distance is incredibly difficult but to drop it over the goal umpires hat... impressive.

Well although I disagree, I guess we all have different experiences watching footy.

Imo toughness is a natural born trait, however intensity and aggression around the ball consistently through a game is fitness and mindset that can be developed and worked on. We see many talented draftees come through the system and struggle with the intensity and speed of the top level and it takes them a few years to get used to it/perform to the level required.

I think Cody for a 16 year old has everything you could ask for. Demanded the ball consistently throughout the game which I love to see, put his head over the ball on numerous occasions and ran hard to get to damaging areas. Did he assert himself in every contest? Definitely not. But he showed he's more than happy doing so when he needed to.

Anyway even if somehow he ended up an outside receiver, if your getting the ball close to 30 times a game and having 5 shots on goal from the midfield he can have the ball handed to him on a silver platter for all I care.

What sort of player is Cody?

Does he have his old man’s tank?

A future Rising Star winner, Brownlow medalist, Premiership player, Premiership captain for his fourth flag, Hall of Famer and then eventually he will obtain legend status.

So yeah, he will be a handy player.
