"Being able to strip it back and say, 'we'll do A, B and C outside of footy, so we can take the stress out of footy not being there' … that way, we'd have been fine without footy and it allowed footy to just be fun.

"I was lucky enough that I had a family wedding overseas, so I left for Christmas a week early. That was good for me mentally, just to be able to get away because I probably wasn't dealing with the club moving on from me being the No.1 target.

"To be able to get away and have some family time … I'm pretty intrinsically motivated, so I could go away and still train hard on my own. I came back in good nick, but it was the mental freedom of getting away.

"I could come back and it didn't matter whether I was playing VFL or AFL, I'd be playing and having fun and training and having fun.

"I knew I was going to go down swinging and the best way to do that was to be a kid. If you strip it all back, we're all just big kids who love playing footy and having fun."

It bears some similarity to what Billy Gowers said at WB. Demonstrates pretty clearly that they spend a lot of time thinking about themselves, about the game and how to stay motivated.

There’s a country kid I’ve struck up a friendship with - these guys arent much older than my kids so i kind of relate to them & how they must feel. He knows that whenever he likes theres a seat at my table to eat a meal in a family, country type atmosphere. He came up after last seasons bye for an evening & we all just sat around a table, at a roast & talked about life stuff. Chatted to my sons just as other “people” without all the football talk. We spoke about farm type stuff, stuff that’d be every day ”normal” to him then let him light a ripping big bonfire. My involvement with carlton thru player sponsorships & my kid doing a “assistant coach for a day” is to be a “supporter” of the young men & not so much a “barracker” - support them when they’re up but more importantly when not so up.. I’d like to think someone would hold out a hand of support if my sons had to go away from home to work in such a punishing & sometimes unforgiving environment..

they all need that escape from football like Levi talks about.

Ben Waterworth isnt a fan of the Teague train it seems. Picks us for bottom 4 again (7th of 10 for being able to reach the top 8 or top 4).

Just another journo conducting an analysis - and prediction of future outcomes - based predominantly on ‘champion data’ statistics. Wasn’t/isn’t worth reading.

would still love to see some of our blokes work a bit more mongrel into their game - harder and harder to do with the way the rules are these days........

I watched the Adelaide game back yesterday, and it's the small things that you notice upon rewatching. I'd long thought Casboult didn't use his size to his advantage enough.

In that game though, there was a passage of play where the ball hit the ground in traffic inside our forward line. There were Crows in front of Levi and they were all running towards the ball. Levi bodylined the ball and while he couldn't take possession, he took the Crows out with his body and neutralised the contest.

I can see these things happening more and more for a lot of players in our team as their confidence grows. There will be so much pressure coming from underneath with the genuine depth we have now. No room for compromise anymore.

it's true players are likely to throw more at it with pressure building from below.......but it's ok to play that way all the time too - see jack silvagni - mods please feel free to move to any appropriate threads dealing with development and/or depth.

Wonder if Rhys-Jones is available to pass on some knowledge?

Rhys is one of my favourite players . Loved how he gave it but also got beaten up a lot. His grace like giraffe gait coupled with beautiful hands and a willingness sold me. Love him.

“There are 15 players on Carlton’s list that are rated either ‘below average’ or ‘poor’ heading into this year.”
Who would they be?
Lang
TDK
Polson
Dow?
O’Brien?
Newnes
Goddard
Kennedy?
Macreadie
Pittonet?
Stocker?

That’s 11 with a few ? In my opinion. They surely can’t include players that haven’t played.

Out of those players, any that played less than 10 games in the last 2 years, of which there a few, don't count as below average or poor

Start by looking at our least experienced players, we've got 16 with less than 20 games under their belt including 9 yet to debut.

Hard to rate a players output as anything but below average or poor until they can get on the park fairly regularly and give CD some numbers to crunch.
  1. Kemp (0)
  2. Philp (0)
  3. Ramsay (0)
  4. Honey (0)
  5. Phillips (0)
  6. Cottrell (0)
  7. Ben Silvagni (0)
  8. Owies (0)
  9. Finbar (0)
  10. De Koning (2)
  11. Stocker (5)
  12. Pittonet (7)
  13. Macreadie (7)
  14. Goddard (12)
  15. Polson (16)
  16. Williamson (17)
Unless they don't count 0 gamers... in which case it gets tougher. Thinking about how CD rates players positionally.... I'd add Dow, O'Brien, Fisher, Cuningham, Gibbons, Marchbank, Kennedy, Jack, Casboult?...

Id say they count the zeroes. So my list is thus:
Kemp
Philp
Ramsay
Honey
Phillips
Cottrell
BSOS
Owies
Finbar
TDK
Macreadie
Goddard
Polson
Obrien
Dow

That’s 15
Stocker, Willo, Pittonet, JSOS, Fisher, Cunners, Gibbons, Marchbank, Cas would all be average or better. Some may not have played many games but when they have they’ve statistically matched up well with players of their position. Casboult would nearly be elite in defence (intercepts, contested marks)
