Remember the geniuses at champion data rated Melbourne's list as the best in the league at the start of 2019. They have also rated the kangaroos as having the second best midfield in 2020.
Grain of salt et all.

Champion Data.

Its French for... Stats are lots of fun, but sometimes used in isolation they lose all meaning and when interpreted incorrectly you can end up with your head so far up your own arse that not only are your conclusions meaningless but you notice you need a new filling in your wisdom tooth....

Id say they count the zeroes. So my list is thus:
Kemp
Philp
Ramsay
Honey
Phillips
Cottrell
BSOS
Owies
Finbar
TDK
Macreadie
Goddard
Polson
Obrien
Dow

That’s 15
Stocker, Willo, Pittonet, JSOS, Fisher, Cunners, Gibbons, Marchbank, Cas would all be average or better. Some may not have played many games but when they have they’ve statistically matched up well with players of their position. Casboult would nearly be elite in defence (intercepts, contested marks)
They don't count the zeroes

CD ratings won’t include those yet to debut.

They are also not worth printing on toilet paper, given they rate the following as elite heading into 2020:

- Conor McKenna
- Jeremy Finlayson
- Majak Daw
- Shane Edwards
- Sydney Stack
- Paddy Ryder

Their stats are great, but the conclusions they reach from them are often trash.

It’s not overly hard to be elite. If we played Murphy off a wing all year instead of on ball. He’s be elite. You need to be in the best 5% of players for skills they associate with the wing position while spending the equivalent game time and games in that position to be classified as a winger.
My guess is McKenna got a HBF position for elite due to rebound 50s and half back possessions. Majak daw I don’t get as he played zero games in 2019. If he’s classified as elite from 2018 stats then what’s the cut off. Docherty would be still elite coz that’s where he left it. Ward from GWS is also considered elite despite 0 games. Stack being elite for what is anyone’s guess. Surely you have to have a minimum of 10 games to be counted.

Stack leading the comp in tinarseness.
1 game for 1 flag.

Remove a few outliers and it's reasonably accurate. It's not as though the likes of Cripps & Fyfe are rated poor.

No ranking system is going to produce a consensus among a million+ followers.

We’re not debating CD we’re debating the waterworth article stating carlton have 15 players rates below average and poor. We can’t find them.

My goodness. Storm in a teacup.

I reckon every team would have 10-12+ below average or poor players. No need to get your collective knickers in a knot....

Not counting zero gamers, here's my guess at our 15.

Stocker
TDK
Cuningham
Dow
Goddard?
Lang?
Macreadie
L O'B
Polson
Williamson
Pittonet
Setters?
Kennedy
Gibbons?
JSOS?

Now I'm not calling any of these guys spuds...but on paper (statistically) these guys would have output less than average.

We all love Willo but statistically he averages 12 touches and 2 R50s. He's going to be below average. I love JSOS's hustle, but he averages 11 touches and less than a goal a game. How do you think he stacks up to a typical experienced fwd?

Gibbo will be much better with a full pre-season and played in the middle. But on paper, 15 touches a game makes him a plodder.

I love the recruitment of Pittonet for peanuts, but his stats (so far at AFL level) don't stack up against your average main ruck.

Etc etc

Remove a few outliers and most casual fans can be accurate too.

That’s not exactly a great endorsement for the premier stats company in the game.

Ill have a crack but as i don't know the criteria it is hard and as you said players like Daw who didn't play a game are still there.

Macreadie
Polson
Lang
Pitonett
Goddard

struggling already

Dow
Obrien
Stocker
Kennedy
TDK
Williamson

Whilst i don't think any of the names in the bottom list are average players, i can easily see how they would be ranked as such. Still quite short of 15

Well the article is rubbish then. In no way can they find 15 below average players on our list. Impossible.
They have to have played 5 of the last 40 games I think, keeping in mind those who have played a lot less than that are going to be up against it as the point system counts against those with injuries etc. Also, young, inexperienced players are being rated against

last year we had 15 players in this rating range, they were: Ed Curnow, SPS, Weiters, Pickett, Casboult, JSOS, Lang, Bugg, Marchbank, Cuningham, Kennedy, Polson, O’Brien, Garlett, Williamson.

SPS and Weitering wouldn’t be in this category anymore.

Nor would pickett Garlett and Bugg. So maybe he’s using old stats.

Carlton has four new AFLPA delegates across its AFL and AFLW sides ...

CARLTON will have four new AFLPA delegates heading into 2020.

Joining board member Ed Curnow as the Club’s AFL representatives, Jacob Weitering and Will Setterfield will take on greater responsibility heading into the new season.
They will be joined by Darcy Vescio and Nicola Stevens from the Game Changers.
