This is certainly an interesting stat:
Curiously, the Blues have won just five of their 12 quarters, yet Voss has got his side playing a brand of football that has them capable of piling on goals in short succession.
Conversely (IIRC) our quarters won under Teague last year early was top 4; just, when we lost a term, we lost it badly.

Think quarters won is a bit of a weird stat; if you win the first quarter by 1 point but lose the second by 30, you're sitting 1-1.

Mguane article is correct regarding how vulnerable our defence is and how it is insulated by the midfield. We still turn the ball over and struggle to carry the ball forward from defence. However, Mcguane's black and white bias came out when he indicated Carlton is no certainty to make the 8. Hey, the Dees are not either, at this stage of the season
Greatest thing I have ever read .. if the mids insulate the backs it gives confidence to defend and attack -- of the backs are confident they will start to hold the line. Last week we lost 1/2 the defence .. we just need some Ying with the Yang /

I agree with you 90%.

The scoreboard is the final arbiter.

Anything else - quarters won, time in front, time in possession - are just indicators. Who cares what they are if you're winning.

Your +1 vs - 30 is a great expression of this.

Where I disagree is that the indicators can indicate how/why you're winning. And therefore how/why you might be beaten.

If we're only winning 5/12 quarters but winning matches, then the other team is control for almost 60% of the match (well, sort of; quarters are a somewhat arbitrary measure). It just so happens that when we're in control we dominate the other side. But what if the other side manages to control/withstand our burst? Is that 'our shot'? Do we have the ability to wrest control back? Or are we spent?

Our aim is to make the most of the time that we are in control. And limit the damage when we are not.

But wouldn't we also want to work on how much of the time we are in control?

Being on top for longer is also an important part of the equation. Not just what we do when things are going our way.

Voas chats about
  • Being flexible
  • Health and safety protocols
  • Reviewing the Hawks match
  • The backline
  • Midfield rotations
  • Focusing on systems and whole-of-opponent approach; not just individual players - right, so the coaches have barely thought about Touk Miller, then???

Would be one of the smartest bit of recruiting that I can remember.

Really ticking some boxes our recruiting team! SOS's understudies.

Such a clever signing.
  • Engine room player, but can play other roles
  • Blue collar, hard worker. Does the defensive stuff
  • Ed replacement, but more skilled.
  • Will put in week-in, week-out
  • Allows Cripps and Walsh to do their thing, knowing they can rely on Hewett to do his part.
Not the most talented of our midfielders, but almost the most important piece. The glue that binds everyone into a more well-rounded midfield brigade.

I'd be willing - if I had time, but I need sleep right now - to make the argument that Quarters Won is a defensive indicator as opposed to an offensive one, on the basis that it while it depicts your scoring if your defense is miserly you're going to win more quarters than you lose.

I wasn't so much saying the stat was useless, just that sans context it doesn't tell you a great deal, but that's true of most stats really.

It is a useless stat. Considering the good teams often put their opponents away in just a quarter or two. The 4th quarter is often won by the team already down 40+ points. Hardly means a thing.

The amount of games that are close for the first quarter then one team dominates 2nd and 3rd to put the game out of reach and then 'loses' the fourth. They dominate the game and scoreboard but quarters won is 2-2.

I don't agree with his underlying thesis, that it all comes down to the players and that culture is overstated.

A change in Carlton's culture is a huge part of why this team has taken a big step forward. We had all of the same big talent last season and couldn't put it together, had underperformed recruits etc.

Voss has been a breath of fresh air in getting the players in the right mindset and building a gameplan which plays to the teams obvious strengths (contested ball and goalkicking firepower).

It's all about the talent, it's the number 1 factor, rather than the bullshit click bait " winning/losing culture"

More important areas, such as a workable gameplan, health and fitness which enables cohesion, buy in, etc, greatly improves the output of that talent

As for culture, more important not having a fractured environment than having a so called great culture, when compared to your opposition

Last week there was an article that mentioned the senior players were not happy with the playing group and their dedication to the team.

That we are seeing players play for each other this year tells you the playing group has changed the culture (along with all the other change)

There are more, many minute factors that are involved. As I said, if things are fractured beyond repair, then it's an issue, otherwise it's near impossible to judge what level of culture exists, especially if you are trying to compare it to your opposition

Lol that's just a whack at dodododorio. Did enjoy.

Taking McGrath over Taranto and McCluggage and Francis over McKay and Charlie Curnow would haunt most clubs but * absolutely love him. 😂
