Carlton v Richmond season opener again in 2016

Why not?

If Richmond wins by 100 like some are saying they will then we can enjoy Richmond pumping themselves up as GF contenders because you know beating Carlton is meant to be a big deal. Then they will either finish 9th or lose their elimination final.

If Carlton wins then I get to enjoy Carlton thinking they are back only to finish last again. Also the annual is Hardwick the right man to lead us forward and he has had his chance talk!

Win-win for all us supporters!

What are you on about. The only times it hasn't been the season opener is when the MCG has been busy so they split the round.
Season openers
2008 - Richmond v Carlton
2009 - Richmond v Carlton
2010 - Richmond v Carlton
2011 - Richmond v Carlton
2012 - GWS v Sydney the week before since the MCG was booked. Richmond v Carlton first game at the G.
2013 - Same. Split round. Richmond v Carlton first game at the G and first game of the second week.
2014 - MCG booked. No MCG games in round 1. Richmond v Carlton Thursday night at the G in round 2.
2015 - Richmond v Carlton
2016 - Richmond v Carlton

For 8 years Richmond v Carlton has been the first game played at the G and the first game of the season if the G is available.

But sure whatever you say
Have no clue why people are surprised.

I wish for it to continue. It's not an Anzac Day or Dreamtime game but it's something that CFC and Tigers should fight to keep going. I've been to nearly every season openers since it started and the excitement and energy the crowd displays is spectacular. Surely teams have cycles where they are on the bottom then at the top but it's an event that can keep getting good crowds. In few years when Blues have built list up and Tigers still playing good then would get full house which it has been in the past

Haha I've watched my team win an AFL Grand Final, have you? I enjoy this season opener so I can remind my Richmond mates that they are the only team in AFL history to have lost a final to a team that didn't even make the 8.

Lmao. Love it.
Has a shot at Richmond then gets salty when he gets some back.
Dont give if you cant take, buddy.

We now accept a competition where clubs expecting to finish near the bottom field essentially development teams.

Carlton are in that position . . . again.

So why would anyone want to see those sort of teams over-represented in prime time?

Prime time games should be exclusively for teams challenging for finals.

But they did make the eight, go check that ladder if your confused and then tell me who finished in 8th spot.

And for 8 years they stunk it up...

lol @ the AFL forcing everyone to watch Carlton games :$

Sure, Carlton may not 'deserve' to play such a big fixture but if they're trying to turn this into a 'tradition' :)$) then they can't chop and change it every year based on ladder position.

The fixture has heaps of problems, who really cares who plays the first game of the year.

We'll why do pies and bombers get to play on Anzac Day? Neither deserve to do so... Exactly because it's a tradition just like this game

Despite everyone tipping a Richmond flogging over Carlton, I give Carlton a sniff. Remember Richmind are usually all over the shop in the first two months of the season, dropping games they should win.

Anyone else think ANZAC day should be GF rematch ar the G, even if it's 2 interstate teams. Would still draw 80,000 plus.

If it's between 2 interstate teams, then no thanks (not worth sacrificing a home game for the sake of some $$)
I would rather my club get a chance to host a game on Anzac Day, but we were too late to the party so it won't happen. Freo deserve it more anyway.

What you plebs don't understand is it's all about numbers and money. Big clubs, lots of members. lots of eyeballs.

Can you understand why we don't open the season with a Norf v Bulldogs blockbuster?

Would be an infinitely better game though. Carlton are just a straight up rabble. And Richmond: pretenders that don't have big match temperament.

You are dumb and don't understand a thing called ratings. Ratings is how the television sells advertising to advertisers.
