Pretty sure Isaac Smith only played a single season (might have even been a short stretch of games?) at Ballarat after coming in from Reddan.

What you're saying has plenty of validity, but TAC Cup level footballers have had far less exposure this year, which is why Wehr might be a reasonable target in the 40's, which is where our Pick 38 is going to end up.

I wouldn't be surprised if we're actually looking to take him at 78, if available, and the reporting on him is only because there's some known interest from our end. We have no idea how other recruiters rate him, but state leaguers historically go later in the draft, so we'd have some chance of getting him at a later pick. We might also end up downgrading our second pick for a couple of later picks to guarantee we grab him but not overspend in the process.

His overall profile is good though. He actually has quite a few of Saad's qualities (but not in equal measure); pace, long-range kick, agility and would have some reasonable players to help mould his game on at Carlton.

Watching highlights of Wehr?

He serious looks a young clone of Isaac Smith.

Can't say I remember much of Smith prior to the draft, but IIRC he was still a link up midfielder with need skills and obviously a massive endurance base.

Wehr looks a more conventional modern half back. Distributes neatly, but pushes up the ground and has a nice turn of pace.

Probably rather the player is honest, but if I was a Vic-based recruiter I'd be a little wary of picking him up.

Might end up slipping to Collingwood's pick, or further. Doesn't seem an obvious fit for Essendon.

EDIT: Just saw the comment. The 'I think it'd impact me' is a red flag for sure.

Do you think it’s genuine though or just a trick/ploy to get where he wants?
If every player was honest I’d say most would want to stay in their home state, I’d say whatever I could if it increased my chance of getting to the club I wanted.

That's plainly f'd... unless for serious reasons, medically, family etc that's just not kosher and you'd think make you ineligible to be drafted as I'm sure by signing that form you commit to being drafted anywhere selected.

He has never said he won’t go, it’s a preference, everyone has them.

I would really be surprised if we took both Rowe and Wehr in the 2nd round

My preference would be point of difference players, Winder, Ford, Rosman types

If not, then happy with Pedlar types
Rowe I would be very suprised, seems more like a late/rookie pick if anything. Doesn’t provide defensive pressure either which is what we are seeking

It's a privileged comment. Doubt any player on the fringe of getting drafted is going to be saying something similar, but Perkins has certainly used the opportunity to scare off any interstate clubs thinking of taking him.

Hard to speculate on how he'd actually fit into an interstate club now it's not going to happen, but it's hardly the best first impression for whichever club takes him. Every player is different, but it's shown a little glimpse of fragility - even if it is partly manufactured.

That's the kicker, isn't it.

What 17yo kid is going to opt for an interstate move if they can just ask to stay in their home state where they're able to catch up with their best friends and family every week instead of going weeks or even months without seeing those people? There may be the odd example, like SPS, who want to move interstate. But the overwhelming majority would almost certainly prefer to stay if encouraged to make their preferences known.

There are certainly going to be some kids who would struggle to make the move interstate, and yes, it would be beneficial for all parties if that was made known before the draft. But it leaves it open for manipulation by players who won't struggle in the same way, but would prefer to stay where they've grown up.

It's like the academy system without the accountability. Say WC and Freo have picks in the teens, but a kid rated at 5 says he can't commit professionally unless he's able to stay in WA. Unless a club wants to roll the dice on a kid who's said he'll spit the dummy if he has to move, then one of those clubs is getting a bargain. No matching a Pick 5 bid in points, they just take the local phenom for a token pick.

The draft system is already being watered down with NGAs, the last thing it needs is players getting to dictate where they go.

I'll roll out my fix for, I think, the third year running. Tie player control over club to their length of tenure.

First three years in the system you play where you're drafted. Next two years in the system you can request a trade and nominate a state, but your club is free to deal with any club in that state. Next two years you can request a trade to a specific club. Then after a total of seven years in the system you're a free agent and trades are no longer required.

Formalise that system and players come into the league knowing how it works.

If a player isn't prepared to abide by it, then don't nominate for the draft.

I guess the test will come with the first interstate offer that is more than his current offer I bet he then uses leverage and the threat to leave

Jesus....Archie Perkins on SEN being pretty forthright on not wanting to travel interstate.
Hadn't heard something like that before, either.

Stated that he told recruiters he couldn't commit wholeheartedly if going interstate.

EDIT: The Kinnear Beatson interview on SEN after 9am, was enlightening also. Worth a listen.
As long as the draft age is so young they’ll keep getting kids that are not ready to move. Some kids that age are mature enough to move, some aren’t. Not surprised someone spoke like that in this pandemic year either.

Here's my latest consensus phantom. This take the averages of 16 different phantom/mock drafts:

Unfortunately, it's missing some of the late mail phantoms. I just didn't have time to grab them all.

Did you hear the interview though?

The point again was that he stated that he told clubs that he couldn't 'fully commit' to them should they draft him.
He wouldn't be the first I'm sure and as young as he may be, he knows the rules that surround the draft. He signed up to those rules.

I'm not sure another year would make all the difference either.
It may but there's no proof that would certainly be the case. Who knows, but we'd ned to change the whole system to accommodate players that would then effectively have a whole year out of school. That makes for another discussion though.
