News Cats aim for night opener at 'new' home

They haven't.

That's what I thought, if they had, I would be guessing the club would have been pushing to play the Swans for there debut. Be awesome round 22 Saturday night massive crowd while two finals bound sides fight for position.

But in saying that, with the stand only half built the breeze naturally blowing through would make it very cold.

Hope you don't mind the intrusion. Is there a way that they can play a handfull of the KP games next year prior to the completion of the new stand (as they have this year), and hold the first night game to open the new stand when it's completed? I understand there will be issues with selling memberships in the new stand if half of the 2013 games are played when it's not complete, but having 7 of the last 12 games at KP may not be an easy sell to the other clubs.

Btw, the renders for the new stand look great.

Who complains about Calder Park raceway?

If I go upstairs I can see it. We never hear anything. The way the track is built the sound gets thrown out.
In fact I used to live about 5kms further away and I could hear it !

Small world. I live within spitting distance of Calder Park and it can get pretty bad on a Friday night/big event like the Crusty Demons last year. BUT it isn't that bad. Was worse about 15 years ago when they had the Top Fuel/Jet Car drags there, could hear them all the way to Sunbury like it was being run next door. Cant imagine a football game would get anywhere near that bad.

There is petitions every few years trying to get it relocated, I remember reading something a few years ago about it.
Not sure if there has been any recently though as they use it stuff all now compared to a few years ago thanks to Bob Jane not spending $$ on it, but thats another story.

But same happened with Sandown in Springvale, everyone complained about noise at easternats and had it removed.
Now they are only allowed to host V8 supercars once a year and everything else has extremely strict noise restrictions(test days, track days etc).

Its kinda like moving out near an airport and complaining about planes flying over your house.....
Well without derailing the thread.... oh stuff it :)

I'm pretty sure most of the Calder Park thing is due to them wanting all that land to open up for housing.
And the costs to move it is enormous. There are millions of car tyres under that dirt.

Same goes with the airport. I'm right across the road from it. When we built we were advised of a possible 3rd runway being built. But double glazed windows, fibreglass in the walls, etc limits any sound.

We had the option of going that when we built.
Newtown people don't have the same options. Having said that why would it bother them? South Geelong maybe but not Newtown.

There you go. I was living in Keilor 15 years ago. So that would have been all the noise then.

On which side of the railway line do you live? Overnewton side?

At this stage we're only asking for the 7 home games from round 10, no permission given yet. In fact I will be very surprised if the AFL agrees to this, because of the risk of seen to be "favouring" Geelong with 7 home games in the last 12 or 13 rounds. After all, everyone knows that the AFL already favours us by allowing us to actually play most of our home games against weak teams at our home stadium, where we have a home-ground advantage ;)
Shouldn't really make much of a difference though:

Metricon Stadium wasn't ready until Round 10 last year and the Gold Coast still got 8 games there between Rounds 10-24, similar with SKODA Stadium this year which wasn't ready until round 9 and the Giants still got 7 games there. As long as we get at least 3 or even all 4 of the Melbourne home games in the first 9 rounds, it won't that one-sided in the end

So who will be our first opponent? Richmond? GWS? Fremantle? Adelaide? Port? Gold Coast? West Coast? Melbourne? Sydney? Brisbane? Footscray? Norf?

Thatd be nice, and a possibility if we played a side like dockers or Wet toast in the future.
The recent finals against them only netted about 50k at the MCG - but the AFL would never allow it at the moment due to agreements with docklands and the MCG having to have host x amount of games over so many years.

Shame really, why shouldnt we be able to host a home final.

Why are the rights of the various venues more important than the rights of the clubs? The next time these contract negotiations come around, Geelong needs to strongly insist on its right to host home finals at its home ground now that KP is actually able to accommodate them.

Somehow I can't see the AFL being as accommodating towards the Cats as they were to Gold Coast or GWS. Our prolonged success doesn't fit well with their equalisation policies, and while I don't subscribe to the conspiracy theory that they're out to get us, I still think they won't go out of their way to accommodate us in a request that may be perceived by others as benefiting us and giving us an easy run to the finals.

Absolutely, I totally agree.
It's disgusting that the Geelong footy club along with various governments have themselves funded the upgrades from revenue and profit made by the club.

Whereas, apart from leasing the mcg & docklands, how much do the clubs that call them their homes contribute to redevelopment..... Zilch!

Because, since the passing of VFL Park/Waverley the AFL don't actually own any grounds. They have to negotiate with the Melbourne Cricket Club just to play at the 'G. They have to negotiate with Ian Collins or whoever is currently in charge of the privately owned Etihad Stadium. Not to mention the WACA, or the 'Gabba, or the SCG - it dosen't matter where they are. The AFL owns none of them, and those the AFL have to negotiate with will be out for whatever they can squeeze off them.

Even Kardinia Park is owned by Geelong City Council, not the Geelong Football Club.

No the other side. Just up from Calder Park Drive near Taylors Hill. When we moved up here about 10 years ago we were sold the story of Calder Park no longer being used so the noise wasnt going to be a problem. I think it was a good line for the Real Estate Agents to use to attract people to the area up this way but was probably never gonna amount to much. While they don't run top fuel drags there anymore they certainly do off street stuff here almost every weekend which isnt to bad. It's the big events that get the place all packed up, because the roads in and out of there are limited to only a couple of options depending on which side of the track you come from. Though fortunately those events are fairly rare.

Could the lights at KP open up options for other events to be held their outside of the AFL? If so i could see the South Geelong residents maybe getting a bit peeved about it. Maybe not so much about the noise levels or whatever but the huge amount of traffic around there late at night.

As GS , has mentioned there are contracts in place for X number of games at the G and the Docklands , including x number of finals. If we had 2 interstate Prelim finals this year for instance , the G contract would require 2 extra games next year to comp them (from memory). Im doubtful we will ever get close to 9 games again til teh AFL take over the Docklands and that decades away unless they buy out the contract.

I too would love to won pre-sold sell out blockbuster at KP but for the same reason that will not happen.

From memory , the profit from games at KP are close to the 1M range pg for a crowd around 28. For a mega crowd at the G , 75+ it above 800 , but for the Docklands even a sell out game gets know where near those two figures and its takes a crowd of around 30 to break even. At some stage in the future Cooky will talk figures for the KP and we should document it because this subject does seem to come up a bit.

As to if we can get 7 games in the last part of the year , well it would not surprise me that the AFL say you can start at June 1 , but only have 5 or 6 games and the rest at the G/Docklands. As I said they may have games to make up next year.

People will find a reason to get peeved about anything to be honest.

I mean, how many games are there going to be played there each season? 8 max.
Of those 8 I would be surprised if more than half of them will be night games.
So thats 4 nights that the lights will be on till 11:30 max - whoop de do.

4 weeks out of 52 and only 4 days out of 365, serously if you cant put up with that, Move!!

And on a side not SkittleCats, id say they will try and get a few T20 Big Bash games under lights there which will only help our club - possibly bring the amount of night events to 6..... lol

Its great for a profit sense for our club, but it'll never happen.
The AFL wouldnt get the benifits of the extra attendance they get when we fill the larger venues as you take into account raised finals ticket prices & the fact that the clubs dont pay for stadium access come finals time the AFL do.

So where does the profit after stadium hire go, yep the AFL - they are not going to risk missing out on a few extra thousand ticket sales.
Clubs that play finals would most likely get a lot less $$$ than they would during the season.

That sounds a little counter-intuitive. What are the MCG and Docklands going to threaten the AFL with, if the AFL schedule more games in Geelong? What are they going to say? "If you play less games here we'll punish you by letting you... play less games here"? Besides, with two extra teams there are an extra 22 matches played per season so it should be possible to satisfy the existing commitments and still schedule an 8th game at Geelong.

Who would we like as our opponent for the first KP night game? I personally wouldn't mind West Coast/Fremantle so we don't have to put up with the feral Subiaco crowd, or maybe even Footscray or Melbourne to laugh at all their spuds.

Probably the main reason I am relinquishing my seats at KP next season. The past 7 have been a disgrace with only 7 games against the absolute sewer of the AFL. A pleasant change this year to have Adelaide and Sydney but why do all the other games have to go to the 'G' or Docklands. Who cares about fitting in with the big 4 and TV rights. Doesn't our club have rights too. They should have no special priveledges. My membership is overpriced for 7 games of footy. $750 for 2 of us to watch crap games against crap teams. With night games from next season, would prefer to spend the money on booze and enjoy them in the lounge with the dog. Just too late a night with travelling. On the other side is how good have we been to continually beat the Dawks, Bombers, Carltank and the Ferals on their own turf whilst their fans scream about how our gift of a draw allows us a massive home advantage over the rest of the comp.

Really? Give me Hawthorn any day of the week.

Would love to see us play the Pies down here, just so we can hear Eddie whinge when 85-90% of their supporter base can't get a ticket. :D

As fantastic as this would be, it most likely won't occur unfortunately. The AFL are just far too concerned about $$$ to let a big club play down here ATM.
What I really hope happens though is that the Docklands 'home' games disappear. That means all home games against the likes of Richmond, St. Kilda, Bulldogs, and any other second rate Melbourne-based club incapable of drawing a crowd are scheduled for Simonds and not Etihad.

Don't. It is worth its weight in gold.
