I feel the system was a little different.

Once upon a time, you assumed they were corrupt as they were sneakier in their dealings, now they are openly corrupt in front of your face

Having said that, he is already on an extended tenure and will be finishing up, the best thing he can do is just step down and all move on.

I think whether this is wrong depends on your view on a number of things.

It's wrong for the Herald Sun (or anyone) to make a connection to Carlton Respects. That's only relevant if it was unwelcome, and that is far from certain. While we can use our commonsense to doubt the hack story, there's no basis to assume if it was Luke that it was non-consensual.

Was thinking of Chris Yarran, not Samo.
It's a cultural issue, doesn't matter how important or valuable the name is, gently remove them.

Carlton would most likely be arranging a scenario(with the least dramatic headlines) where Sayers rides off into the sunset, all though a few months earlier than the original plan.

What facts make this better?

At best he is bad at personal information security. Which means all sorts of sensitive club materials could be at risk.

This is an embarrassment, which piled on top of various other distractions Luke has brought, make his position as President untenable.

Best to move on while it's still January.

Once March rolls around you know that the AFL media will take the gloves off, if for no other reason than to fill air time leading in to the season
