Is there anyone here who doesn't think Wardlaw should come in? I've seen a mixed bag of comments, some say too soon others say get him in.

I think why not? Surely if he's running out VFL games he can at least play 60-70 mins AFL level. This mfer will lead our tackle count.
I thought (and said) he shouldn’t come in early to appease supporters or for any reason that was outside the plan they’ve been working to for his long-term development.

Now I’ve seen the injury list I‘m not sure how many choices we have, and it doesn’t seem the worst opposition to debut against. Compared to waiting a week and bringing him in against the Pies, I’m seeing upside if they break the glass now.

FB - Ziebell - McKay - McDonald
HB - Bergman - Logue - Sheezel
C - Scott - Powell - Shiels
FOL - Goldstein - Simpkin - Greenwood
HF - Stephenson - Coleman-Jones - Ford
FF - Cunnington - Larkey - Curtis

IC - Young - Drury - Wardlaw - Taylor
SUB - Spicer

  • Corr out gives us an opportunity to get a better balance in the back half. Two KPD's, allow McDonald & Ziebell to play as interceptors, Sheezel & Bergman to take kick outs and be the main distributors. Enough of this f****** s*** ball movement. Young 7th Defender will provide more then Howe, although we all know Clarkson won't do this. I'd consider having Wardlaw rotate between midfield and half back to get him into the game as we have done with Sheezel.
  • Powell comes straight in, Phillips needs a couple more weeks in the VFL (was quiet from what I've read) and we cannot play him Greenwood and Cunnington together IMO, Greenwood/Cunnington cannot be in the midfield at the same time, Shiels spending some more time in the middle, bursts from Wardlaw, Curtis & Ford, it's absolutely an area of weakness for us without LDU.
  • CCJ straight into the forward line and leave him there (no more Logue), Ford/Curtis to play Zurhaar role of up the ground (don't think either are fit enough to do it themselves). Drury & Spicer are our pressure forwards which they're obviously not ready for but other option is Turner which is a no thanks.
  • Tarryn isn't playing this week which is a shame because he'd be a nice addition to our midfield which is a glaring issue with this 22.

Going to be a rough week, but these tweaks hopefully will allow us to play more of a 2023 style, with better ball users/runners in the back half and multiple avenues for goal.

Young is out. Concussed last Thursday training.

Watching the game Phillips didn't really stand out but stats are good 19 disposals and nine tackles

Maybe you'll all be able to tell me "I told you so", but I've always felt like Phillips will be a bust

Loved his U17 highlights (which formed the basis for his 2020 drafting) but there is a very emotional knee-jerk on here for any who query his progress to date.

The concern for mine is that the damage to his development over the 2020-current - Covid, Glandular, coach change, fitness base, pecking order/role, unstable and weak team, little leadership - proves terminal.

Same discussion was held on Cunnington, Ziebell, Simpkin, LDU et al People have no patience or realistic understanding of how long it takes an inside midfielder to make it.

I still have faith, he is coming back from a fair way back. I think now we may as well give him the rest of the years in the 1s to build afl level speed/endurance he is yet to adapt to the speed of afl yet and that will come

This is a good point.

Fukc KC

Just when I let all the negative energy out and feel like I’m over the shitness of Saturday you bring in this pearler 😂😫

It’s so hard to figure out McDonald. You know he’s loves the club and he’s probably a good bloke too. But fukc me he can’t footy for s**t and he has no place being an AFL captain, let alone an AFL level defender.
This campaigner should be sitting in the stands with us.

The worst thing is I believed the campaigner when he said we’d turn a corner. The issue is this muppet and his team turned another corner and did a full 180 back to being witches hats.

Shitmen. That’s what he is.

It pains me this one.

He IS a good guy (from 1st/2nd hand dealings). He loves the club, he means well (take that as patronisingly as you'd like). 10 years in the system, seen it all (at least the bad stuff) and the very sort of lad you want pushing the club up.

But then there's the actual football player he's become.

When do his successes correlate to anything more? I've covered 2020 where he won the B&F yet he only scored coaches votes in 2 games, 1 of them a dead rubber romp over the spooner.

It's unfair but the pattern repeats over and over. His strong games rarely marry up with wins.

His individual skills get exposed at pressure moments when games are hot - outmarked by smaller opponents. Getting done on a dash 2 minutes into a game. Making slow or terrible decisions with ball in hand. The long kicks to nowhere that look like a rugby union convert just roosting it with no finesse.

He's a poster boy for the NMFC Talent Vortex TM. The tall, long striding, long kicking left-footer of 2013 VFL finals - our very own Grant Birchall? What the hell happened to that guy? He's hitting his prime years as a club captain and I doubt opposition coaches give him a second thought (on his recent form) in their planning.

That's an emotive response mate.

I'm not writing Phillips off. But anybody who dare discuss his progress is blanketed with that very type of reply. He's a ~180cm well built (proportionately) on-baller at a bottom team, 3rd year in the system - currently in the VFL.

It's not the end of the world, but I can understand why people raise him in meaningful discussion. He has had an unprecedented amount of interference to his top-age + 1st 2 years in the system.

Fwiw I don't recall Simpkin's pathway to B&F being questioned.

the emotional reaction is those calling him a bust, or in this instance "always" a bust

I have no idea but

I doubt there has been enough game time to have him being written off yet.
I probably have always thought all our players will come good. Neilson was one I thought looked promising.

Phillips is a accurate short kick which is often better than the long bomb for a team with not many big talls.
And he can get the ball even with Edwards rucking.
Hopefully he gets fit enough to play inside mid. Mix him up with LDU, Wardlaw, Jy we could have a quality midfield.

For the amount of times I heard Ziebell and Basti were going to be guns, forgive me if I'm a bit cautious

Perfect summation.

The way Chapman cooked him in his 1st game in 2014 - it was just a weird feeling that night as the kid was meant to be our best recruit in years and a 35 yo premiership champion made him look reserve grade. Nothings changed in 10 years.

It's both camps imo. He's produced some very sharp AFL highlights but has struggled to date to stamp himself in the senior lineup for many reasons.
The main one being serious illness last year tho.

But that is an issue. The simple truth is we don't know if he's a bust or not at this point cos he was sick with glandular fever and missed a whole season.

All told, the Swans currently have their three best tall defenders, three tall forwards, incumbent ruckman and best midfielder in the casualty ward. The only bright spot last week was the return of Sam Wicks (shoulder) in the VFL.

Surely we are a chance to show a competitive effort given their list of injuries.

It probably didn't help that LMac kicked it straight to Chapman with his first touch, and went back over his head through the big white poles.

My take on Luke is that he was physically very well developed as a junior - he was pretty much the same body shape as he is now. This made him stand out, notably with his ability as an 18 year old to kick the ball 60 metres - I remember him kicking a goal from the centre square at Princes Park when he was playing VFL for werribee as a junior.

Those attributes over-inflated his reputation, but we weren't the only ones - without the F/S system, West Coast were prepared to take him for a top 10 pick.

Our problem was political - we had to match the bid, partly because Donald was still an influential figure, and partly because we contributed to the over-marketing by parading him at Werribee
