I don't envy the selection committee meeting this week. Poor Fagan.

Matho's selection and performance could be a turning point to our season. I fully expect Fagan to do a double back now and go "so what else have we missed so far here?". Rayner and Bailey got moved into forward 50, we had Mathieson (10 clearances) and Fort (8 clearances) as real ground ball getters than everyone waiting for Neale to make his move. Expecting Coach to bring in more tweaks, now that we had a taste of it and like what we saw.

Ah Chee didn't get sighted by MRO which is great news. Match Review: Blue cops ban, Nank incident explained

Zorko plays HBF and come in for Answerth. I wouldn’t change the midfield, except to maybe consider Lyons position.

I've come around to keeping Answerth in. He could be our break the glass to provide defensive support even in the middle. He'll fight for that ground ball and won't let it go past too easily. I'm happy to carry his disposal imperfections purely for his ability to put body on the line and provide defensive cover.

I'm still off the opinion we can't play Answerth against Kozzy Pickett. We need to play Madden and prepare him for that match up. Now don't ask me how to fit both Answerth and Madden in the same squad :drunk::drunk::drunk::drunk:

Answerth is CRAZY BRAVE! Not afraid to put his body in front of leading forwards and cop the hit.

I love Joe but he just doesn't look right to me.

He had that shoulder issue earlier in the season and it looks to me that it's still a problem

In the Essendon game , he was heavily scragged and at one point one of their players pulled his arm back at an awkward angle, which seemed to aggravate that shoulder issue.

I woudn't be against Joe being rested for a game due to "General Soreness".

It would at least open up a few more options for Ruck/forward combinations
It seriously looks like our best ruck combination is Fort and McStay. Maybe we play Oscar as FF in place of Joe. Personally Id be going with Rayner at FF, leaving out Oscar and Joe. This would give us more room to keep Matho and the other mids.

In: Rich, Berry, Oscar, Adams, Prior
Out: Bailey, Gardiner, Hipwood, Sharp, Lyons

Giving Bailey a run in ressies to wake up and find form.

I am firmly in the ‘leave dizzy in’ camp now. Yes he has a few brain fades and gets beaten sone weeks, but he brings a level of toughness that you need.

He is a junk yard dog every backline needs.

I dont envy the selectors job this week but I would like to see -

In - DevRob, Jerry, Rich, Lester, Oscar, (Prior as sub)

Out - Coleman - injured isnt he? Payne, Cockatoo, Fullarton as sub, Sharp & McStay (both out with Dan never to play again if he doesnt want to be at the club anymore)

I hope that club doesnt rush Zorko back just yet. Also, how long until Adams is back?

There is zero chance Dev randomly gets pushed forward selection with the headaches we have with other players.

We've been ok with being an average clearance team for the rest of the season

Plus we'd be replacing him with Zorko and giving Lyons more onball time

Lol being ok losing clearances and losing games cause we are losing clearances isn't a great mantra for a sporting team.

Even the coach says Mathison probably should have been picked earlier.

Clugga, who was best on field, said the difference in the mid field this week was matho playing. High praise indeed.

At some point you are going to have to come to terms with the fact that, based on our current list, matho deserves to be in the ones.

What has he done that makes you so anti?

Gee you're touchy about Matho

I'm not anti Matho. I have no idea where you got that from. I've been saying for a very long time we desperately need midfield depth. At the same time the coaches do have some idea what they're doing

Pretty sure earlier in this thread I posted I'd like to keep him in. Just don't think the coaches will do it and if they don't even at Mathos best it's not a huge loss to replace his midfield time with the 2022 versions of Zorko and Lyons

Unless you're one of the people who think bigfooty should be in charge of selection

Yep I am touchy over matho. I'm not OCD at all ... 🤪

I'm frustrated that the club learnt nothing from Keays. Contested players look different - if you've played you know that the biggest energy zapper isn't running up and down all day, it's the strength stuff. Tackling, contesting, trying to move with other guys hanging off you. Contested players have big engines, just spend the energy differently.

To win a premiership we need contested players, which means we need to be able to assess contested players based on their role. Bit like dedicated wingers - it's a role that needs to be understood.

Both Keays and matho are good contested players. We appear to have been assessing them on criteria appropriate for outside mids.

Hopefully our coaches are now rethinking how they rate contested players so we don't have to go through this again.

And I'm now self banning for at 24 hours.

We also need contested players at the next contest. Winning it out the middle is all well and good but if the opposition has a couple of extra players at the next contest they're likely to get it back and then stream forward past our slow midfield.

Its a balancing act.

I think our midfield more needs a Zorko replacement than a Lyons replacement

Hopefully JBerry can play more onball and let Ah Chee, Prior and Robbo play wing

Lyons onball isn't working at the moment. Neale needs support but Lyons is letting Neale go for that first groundball get and then do a kick out of congestion. We need players who can support Neale and be on their hands n knees, scraping for the ball at the bottom of the pack. Matho did it and Fort did it too, certainly made us look way better in the middle straightaway.

Our silky players on the outside like McCluggage were able to do their stuff because of us winning the contest on the inside though. Granted it's just one game but the balance looks much better with real ball winners playing in the middle and feeding our outside players with quality disposal like Hugh.

Needs to be remembered how pathetic GWS were on the weekend. All for persisting with it but I don't think they will.

They'll need to find someone to make way for Zorko and I don't see them dropping Lyons

I think dropping Lyons is the right move here.

Looking at our line up against GWS, these are the likely changes based on where they played

Berry for Sharp
Rich for Cockatoo
Zorko for Lyons
Prior for Robbo

In my view, we should just not pick Rich and ask him to go and do a mini-pre season before finals. Lose some weight, get a running coach to cover more Kms with those legs etc. Rich is surplus to our needs at the moment and if he comes back a bit more fitter, it'll make us lot more dangerous.

I'd keep playing Cockatoo or Madden in defense to find a different mix compared to having Rich and needing to cover for him.

There's next to no hope of them dropping Lyons. They'll keep playing him till he's seen to come good. That's obvious. Unfortunately Matho is one poor game away from confirming what they really think. So he has to keep producing efforts similar to last week to be assured of keeping his place.

Zorko has to be a risk now if we throw him in the M/F. He's already come back twice and not cut it body wise. We do need him in the team in some capacity against the good teams.

But anyone who thinks Selection Committees don't make mistakes hasn't been around footy too long. Occasionally they make howlers. They have pet likes, dislikes and things they're looking for , there's always a reason for selections ,doesn't necessarily mean it's always the right one. If anyone should know they should ,sometimes their criteria is a bit skewed.

If we're being serious about finding the right combination for finals, we have to drop him.
I'm wondering why he's had such a relatively sudden drop off in output. It was only last year he was still racking up big numbers.

He's been a liability in many recent games . I don't see that anyone could realistically dispute that.

More gawling is that Jarryd is still contracted for a further 2 years. Looks like a shocking a decision if it wasnt at the time unless the club needed to do so in fear of losing him.
