Really interested in this game to see how important the short number of days between games impacts this match. Carlton had two short turnarounds in 2 weeks resulting in a smashing by Port. Fast forward to now and Pies have had two short turnarounds in a row.

On paper, you have us covered easily but will be interesting to see how much the last two weeks take out of the Pies. Might be a surprise result, or at the very least, a close run match. Doesnt reflect a fair matchup in my opinion as recovery is hugely important. Blues get a sneaky chance.

The reason Carlton got smashed is that you're not very good. We will obliterate you.

Player or me?

I admire his surviving ability.
He has gone out and carved a very nice career for himself.
On that he deserves great admiration.

He just doesn't seem enough at AFL level for me.
But I was scratching my head when he was getting picked in 2010 too.

But as always good luck to him

What drive is this though?

Those 7 kicks must have been something of a magnificent level against the Cats, and that was a slightly above average return for him this season.

I don't get it.

When he's involved it looks good, but James Aish averages as many possessions as Varcoe yet rightly so is maligned by most.

Bit of a rudimentary way to look at a player's efficacy on a match.

The average impact of Aish versus Varcoe on a match is stark.

You guys will win.

This game is absolutely primed for an upset. This side isn't good enough yet to win the games it should, when it should. I totally see us going out there on Saturday just expecting it to happen, much like last year and getting rolled.

Then we'll beat GWS the week after.

As said before the Geelong game excellent changes by Buckley and a week later he has made excellent changes again. During his coaching career IMO he has lost many many games at selection. Great run with injuries let's hope we can knock of Carlton and have a shot at GWS

Not happy with Broomhead out. He finally gets an uninjured run them gets dropped? Glory be

He missed a fair chunk of the pre-season so whilst his 5 matches have been solid a rest or run at VFL level through the midfield will do him some good. He hasn't played more than 15 games of footy in a season in 5 years so 2017 is all about continuity of play regardless of the level. He'll be back!

Post selection I just have to ask if anyone has raised the alarm yet? I can do it, but I don't want to double up. Reason being that this weeks selection is far too sensible to have been done by our match committee so I'm worried that the people that usually do it have been kidnapped or something

Yes I would have gone with Cox out instead of Schade offering the same setup with Reid forward instead of Cox, but it's still so damn refreshing to see us not tinkering with that structure overall! Individual talent won't decide the match it will all hinge on how we move the ball so fingers crossed last week wasn't an aberration.

As PieBeast stated (I believe in the post match thread) we've seen this before under this coaching group where we manage to stumble on a system that works with the playing list we have only to pack it in against teams like Carlton that are below us and we then go back into our shell. The next few weeks are the ultimate test of this coaching group because we should be able to square the ledger by the bye if we bring last weeks system, but history suggests we'll win v GWS and stumble against one of Carlton, Brisbane, Hawthorn or Fremantle...

Possibly the visions i have in my head of the game, and our defense were of Schade switching alot, i'll accept that.

I do think though, unlike almost everywhere else on the ground, it is super important for the defense to operate as a cohesive unit. Each man covering the other when its needed and i felt we did a great job of that on the weekend. I'm giving Schade alot of credit yes, because i believe as a young 23 year old he has done a great job down back thus far in the year.

I guess im just not sure he deserves to not get a game when other, more senior players (Goldsack) have failed to step up at times this year.

The match that I watched from the Southern Stand had Schade rolling onto Hawkins two or three times late in the match because Dunn spent the last 10-15 minutes on the pine.

Aside from that Dunn was the man standing him in the one on one's. Schade was stiff definitely and it could have just as easily been Goldsack that roled out of the 22 given he was back to his fumbly best, but your attempt to twist the facts on the Hawkins match up don't wash with me personally.

Even in the context of surviving calling a Collingwood player who has only ever given his best, limited as it is, a cockroach was on the low side.

That's a very emphatic response Jmac. Perhaps you'd like to tone it down? Credit where it's due Ed was bang on the past fortnight that we'd be roled by the Dons and get the Cats.

How confident are you that we'll replicate how we moved the ball last week v Carlton? I think Carlton will look to put us under more frontal pressure than the Cats and we struggle going laterally from stoppages. That said I do have faith that we've released the shackles on that 30 metre angle kick into the corridor which naturally creates overlap. If they then defend the corridor things will get interesting.

In essence if they're able to sustain 4 quarters of good frontal pressure and hold a good structure through the corridor we'll need our skills to be bang on. IMO, they'll be able to do both for large chunks of the match the doubt I have is around us sticking to our guns if it isn't working early to mid game.

Perfect example was the Blues v Suns match. Early on the Blues denied the Suns run extremely well and it was Tom Lynch keeping them in it. Once they tired the Suns came home with a wet sail. I expect this one to go the same way where we either blow them away with good ball movement once they inevitably tire or we revert to Collingwood under Buckley and it becomes a 50/50 match...

I'm not as certain that Dunn is a good match for Casboult who is at his most dangerous taking contested F50 pack marks. Not too sure Dunn can actually get off the ground in those situations and could potentially give away a few frees trying to stop Casboult's run and jump.

Conversely, I don't know that Schade is an any better matchup but his extra 1/2 a yard of pace might help.

Goldy and/or Howe 3rd man up might be the saviour. Even Reid to a lesser extent.

We win the midfield battle and it becomes less of an issue.
Not many can stop Casboult when he gets a run and jump at it. I think Dunn is strong enough to engage and keep him on the ground legally whilst Howe or Reid floats in front of him.

Might upset alot of you plebs on here but why is cox in the side. Cant mark, kick, tackle or handball. All he can really do is hit outs and that's just because he's 25 foot tall

If Buckley knew how to use Cox properly, it wouldn't be an issue.

I mean, he can't be THAT hard to use/coach.

Instruction 1: "Mason, I don't want you to leave the goal square, or at the very worst, Forward 50"

Instruction 2: "Mason, every single mark you go for, please put your arms up, which will force your opponent to chop your arms"

Instruction 3: ????

Result: Profit

Brave opinion :p

Fairly sure that's the sentiment of at least half the posters in this thread.

I am supremely confident that we will win, and win well (6 goals+). We will be the team that denies Carlton the corridor and their turnovers will result in plenty of goals for us. Our backline will be very comfortable and I expect our quick and accurate ball use to place their defenders under enourmous pressure. This one as the making of a real blow out.
It's going to be a great day.

Polarising player. I am on the side of him developing well. Think he takes a few contested marks here and there that show what he can develop into. Because he is quick and agile for a man his size he does also present a different range of difficulties for defenders. Guess it's watch this space for now.

This is such an outdated idea. In modern footy every player needs to be able to apply a zone, which means you can't have one player staying in a particular area of the ground for the whole match. Cox has also done well in the ruck. I agree with instruction 2 though, his marking needs to improve.

Maybe you can make yourself feel better by posting that he is a late change a few hours before the game.

So what you and Shepsh are saying is that if we do not play with the same vigour and style like last week then the players are not following Bucks game plan and we will lose?

If you can't tell I haven't gotten over last years loss to them! Is that the game Eddie said Bucks had to change his game style after???

Goldsack may have fumbled a few times this year but he is quicker that most of our side, has a long kick, doesn't get caught holding the ball, can mark and can spoil and always puts in an effort.

He would be the 2nd player picked in the back 6 after Reid every week if it was up to me. Not a gun but a good player who has been in very good form from time to time throughout his career.

We have a MAJOR issue with our forward thrusts whereby we have no forwards inside 50 when we win the ball in the middle.

I think we need to go back to basics ro a little more old school on this one until we get our shit sorted. Our midfield and defence is good enough to handle a lumbering Mason Cox not being there.

I've watched football long enough and especially Collingwood long enough to have some awareness of the psychology behind footballers, I mean, anyone who has played sport themselves should too. But then we see it in football all the time.

Badly coached sides with talented lists tend to play better when they play better sides and invariably are dragged down by shit sides. I mean, Buckley's Collingwood has demonstrated this more often than not the entire time he's been coaching. Carlton are coming into this game as a fairly heavy underdog and have the extra motivation of wanting to spoil the party, again, something that Club has a history of doing.

If we want to take this at a more basic level, my tipping this year has been spot on.

I told everyone Hawthorn would beat West Coast when basically NO ONE thought they would. I tipped us to lose to Essendon with a follow up win against Geelong the week after. My tips seem to be spot on this year.

Do I hope I'm wrong? Of course, I HATE seeing us lose to Carlton, but I actually think this game could be our season. If we win, I firmly believe we move on to 6-4 and then who knows from there. If we lose? We'll still beat GWS but then from it gets muddy.

I think us beating Carlton this week will show we may have turned a corner and matured as a side.

If that's how we look to win the match we'll be in big trouble.

Forget vigour. We can be flat as pancakes, but if we have the belief in ourselves to execute we'll get it done the result will just be lessened. As long as we get the overlap run happening and utilise that inboard kick we'll be fine.
