I’ve done the numbers Gaben and the clearances could be sliced and diced a stack of ways.

Numbers alone you’re looking at a differential of 32 or -3.5 a match. When you drill down there’s a significant outlier in the Rd 1-9 period where we were +21 v Adelaide (won’t happen again). That took us from -2 to +19 (-13 Rds 10-19). Across Rd’s 1-9 we went 5-4 in the clearance head to head and Rd’s 10-19 it was 4-5 so that trended the same. Clearance isn’t a pillar of our success and if we rated well in Rd’s 1-9 it was almost entirely off the back of the anomaly v Adelaide.

As I posted earlier clearance feeds into territory and if we’re transitioning well (which we were until the past fortnight) there’s basically no way for us to claw the territory back. I’d like to see us tighten up our retention game, especially if we’re struggling in transition, but my feel is retention isn’t a priority for us. We’re instead focused on efficiency, which is tracking negatively in terms of turning I50’s into scores and was crap on a SOG conversion front v Carlton.

Looking a bit deeper our I50 numbers have dropped off a cliff. Which is probably a sign of a weaker clearance game, reduced transition as teams take things from us and the territory piece. Again though we just don’t know how highly those factors are rated internally and whether they’re danger signs or watch areas.

The interesting thing is that we've had a heap of different looks in the ruck this year due to injury. Without looking at the numbers, I suspect that we were our most effective in terms of our clearances when Frampton was ruck.

But I think you're right that it's transition and it's other half disrupting attacks that we value the highest, as he's the least effective at that, as he doesn't read it well enough to get far enough forward or back to be an aerial factor consistently when playing in the ruck.

Cox didn't say much about playing this week but didn't indicate he was certain to be returning to the VFL. He'd taken some time off, went away, cleared the mind and found some support. So hopefully he returns this week in some form at some level to his beast mode. His podcast seemed more happy this week and had a positive, rather than negative, slant.

Will we see one of Checkers or McStay sacrifice their game to play defensive on Sicily? If Frampton came in as a defender I'd consider Howe playing defensive forward on him to limit his intercept and make him accountable.
I was wondering whether Fly had Sicily in mind when he put Howe forward in the last qtr last week. He'd be a perfect match up.

They all spent time relaxing, with many going away over the weekend. Crisp & a few others went interstate as well.
