Murphy over Newchurch ******* lol.

Classic Crows
Why try something new (such as a small forward who can kick goals) when you can just go back to what's failed in the past? That's the Adelaide way!
Not saying that I agree, but I'm not surprised they recalled Murphy:
--- after last week, they reckon Tex and Fog are in fine form and probably think blindly they'll kick another 10 between them
--- Murphy's a tough nut and will be given licence to aggravate any opponent ...
oh wait ... that's what they pick McHenry for.

Yeah, it's a dud selection; it would've been a baptism of fire for Newchurch but he is a goalkicker.

Newchurch aside, what really irks me is that one of our most talented young players (Cook) remains on the outer. Get nicked AFC.
I really like Cook’s talent

But he’s starting to be the most overhyped player on Bigfooty

If anyone is watching sanfl he should be going much better

Needs to find some hardness and edge to his game

I’d like him trialled forward and if he can bring some heat to match his class he would improve our smaller forward ranks by plenty

Our coaches just don’t want to get flogged, winning is second
Agree totally --- it's consistent with what we've seen over the last 12 months, even longer.

Nicks, to the other selectors: "We're going to get beaten, but not by 10+ goals. That way we can say at least we're not getting thrashed, we're getting games into tough nut triers like Murphy, but best of all, we keep our jobs".

Meanwhile, back at the ranch, other Clubs are eyeing off Newchurch who will be thinking his AFL future lies elsewhere (as suggested by Bearded Clam, thebirdman 24 and others).

There's a much better reason why Nicks doesn't want the team being thrashed, that doesn't require stupid conspiracy theories along the lines of "we keep our jobs"...

Constant/regular thrashings absolutely destroy the confidence & motivation of the players. That hampers the development of the youngsters, and makes the task of rebuilding much harder & slower.

Just look at what happened at Carlton (historically) and Norf (now), if you want to see the damage done by regular floggings.

Yep, and then Nicks complains that no one can hit a target and we keep turning the ball over

I disagree, with respect.
If Nicks gave a rat's about hampering juniors' player-development he would
--- not play under-performing seniors over in-form juniors, which favoritism is soul-destroying for juniors who are playing their guts out (especially when others have pointed out that Murphy's 2 goals last week were fed to him by Newchurch!), and
--- select small forwards like Newchurch who can kick goals over Murphy, who can't. The Crows need better value for their I50 entries than that provided by Murphy.

I can see Nicks' reasons for selecting Murphy --- tough nut, can get under the skin of opposition, has played vs. Melbourne before etc --- and I was being facetious about Nicks saving his job, like our self-serving pollies.
The time to select Newchurch was weeks ago, to give him a block of games before a nightmare assignment like Melbourne, or at least last week vs. NM when Newchurch might have got a bag.

My first impressions of Murphy and McHenry were positive. I loved their tough-nut, scrappy-trier approach, but the Crows' woes are not about effort. They're based on below-AFL-standard skill levels. The only way to find out if Newchurch has got it, is to play him at AFL level. The challenge of it makes some players lift their game surprisingly.
We know (in this rebuild) what McHenry and Murphy can do.
We won't know about Newchurch until he's given the opportunity.

Just remember everyone, we used a first round pick just to replace Riley Knight with a less effective, worse kick version, playing the exact same role.

At least with all this social media backlash Newchurch might get a game v Hawks next week which I am heading over for . Should really give a home debut with friends and family attending though.
We don't look past the immediate week ahead, so would never even consider something like this.
Hell, we made Jones the sub for a game in Tasmania...

How much of a difference does selecting Newchurch over Murph make to the final result? Sweet **** all.

I reckon a 35 year old Eddie Betts would be kicking more goals in our side than Murphy and McHenry combined.

Betts kicked 27 goals for Carlton last year

Murphy and McHenry have combined for 9 goals so far this year

Nicks hates X factor is the vibe I get.
Along similar lines, Nicks does not take risks.
Everything about him --- selection policy (especially his love of scrappy triers), bomb-it-in-high-and-deep game 'plan', Dawson at HB, and all of his loss-minimisation strategies show he is risk-averse.

It could be argued that Nicks doesn't have the cattle to take risks (**below), but you'd think the Club would've learned from the errors and failures of "safe" Coaches like Craig and Pyke.
X-factor and risk-taking are 2 features of recent Flag-winning sides.

**above --- as Head Coach, isn't it up to Nicks to develop and improve the cattle he's got? It's clear the Crows' biggest problem is their poor skill level, but I see no sign that Nicks is addressing this. The appointment of Burgess will pay dividends, but the Crows' basics of kicking, handball and goalkicking are poor and I do not see them getting better.

It would be horrible as a player to play his gameplan

If Nicks doesn’t care about the future, neither do I. Will now stay home on SAT.
We will have the youngest/least experienced team for the 15th time in 16 rounds (we had a bye in round 13 😁).

This week we have three 100+ game players and seven players with 25 or less games.

Since the start of 2020 the only players to debut are Berry, Butts, Cook, Gollant, Hamill, McPherson, McAdam, McHenry, Pedlar, Parnell, Rachele, Soligo, Thilthorpe, Strachan, Murray, Rowe, Schoenberg, Sholl and Worrell (plus Hinge added to his 2 game career at Brisbane).

Would you like to know how this compares to the other 17 teams?

But, but, but we recalled a 23 year old instead of playing Newchurch. Grab the Pitchforks and Torches!!!!!!

When the club talks about culture they mean getting rid of Stengle. Elite off-field standards, behaviour, discipline.

When I think of culture I see the following:
Ned struggling with injury, goes into the game with knee strapped hoping to get through
Doesn't get through, tweaks his knee again, more strapping, soldiers on. Has a poor game, understandably.

Knows that whilst a regular this season his spot is currently a little tenuous. Murphy outside the team, Newchurch building, Cook and Pedlar in the wings.

But as it stands it's his spot now. Ownership is 9/10ths the law. If he vacates it even for a week or two there's a risk that his replacement will go well. So he will fight to retain his spot at all costs. Whether it's the best thing for the team or the club or his teammates is irrelevant.

It's my spot and I'm not giving it up.

Mine! Mine! Mine!

Not a stab at Ned. He's just following the leaders. This is more a part of our DNA than anything Nicks speaks about. Our coaches enable this. They don't overrule. Heck, some lived this mantra when they were at the club.

A club with a good culture (next man up...?) would use this as an opportunity to blood Newchurch and would do it without thinking.
Talking of culture should surely include Dan Jackson?

We already know, you keep telling us every week

Isn't pressure the only reason Murphy gets a game?
I don't think it's that because Newchurch would put more pressure on with his speed. I think it's purely how many games Murphy has played and the club is scared about our average games per player going below a certain limit.
