I don't know about anyone else but I think we've about covered the ethics of booing. I know it's bye week but let's move on to more football related stuff.
Good thinking. I was wondering, under what circumstances do people feel it is appropriate to cheer at the football? For example, we all probably agree that it is quite fine to cheer if your team kicks a goal, but what about cheering a behind? Further, is it O.K. to cheer every time you team takes a mark, or should you reserve your cheering for truly spectacular marks. I have always been fond of cheering really good hip and shoulder bumps, irrespective of the damage done to the recipient, do people feel that in the modern game there is room for this attitude? Sometimes I have been moved to cheer a good spoil or a particularly effective piece of running, but often those around me are confused by my cheering. Should somebody put out a book on the etiquette of cheering? I have heard tell that there are regional differences as well. Apparently cheering to loudly in most sections of the GABBA can result in eviction, while cheering full tilt in some sections of the M.C.G. and Docklands Stadium is more than acceptable, it is actually encouraged. Apparently they have squads of people devoted to cheering. It is a vexed question.

I have also noticed almost all Lions supporters cheering at the start of our games this year, but there has been almost no cheering at the conclusion of our games. Why is this? Is it that our supporters are out of condition and are exhausted from all the cheering during the course of the game? I know that at some of the games I have been to this year I was so mentally exhausted I had to leave early and I have seen hundreds of our supporters doing the same thing.

What do others think about the issue of cheering?

Really want to see Mick and Juddy sulking after we beat them next week. Also to make my trip to Brisbane worthwhile.

Never cheer your own team's behind, unless it is the winning point at the end of the last.
Always cheer the opposition's behinds, unless it is the winning point at the end of the last.
Being a bit of an old perve, I will sometimes cheer a spectator's behind, as long as no-one knows what I'm cheering at.

Whether other acts on the field, like marks, bumps or tackles get a cheer is dependant on how good or important they are, unless there are so few that each one deserves one just for being one.
I usually come away from the footy with a hoarse throat, whether we were any good or not. My throat doesn't discriminate or distinguish the difference between cheering or abuse.
Some times, just to mix it up, I'll go into Col Elliott mode and give it a bit of "Hey, you bloody mug".

I never leave early. One must soldier on 'til the end.

When can I yell "huzzah" and throw my bowler hat in the air?
When the monkey waiters in fez and waistcoat come with your cocktail order.

Can we just win this one please, we need to beat these turnips.
Ironically Carlton used to be my second team , actually my first team back in the day , but its funny how the years have changed my view on this team, and then there are the comments from the Carlton posters previewing this game(on their site).

If you want to get some fire in your belly for saturday just read the page 2 couple of posts regarding the GH5.
Fire up everyone we need to destroy their cheers at the Gabba . Can't F.#@ing stand this F.....g team.

One more thing if Judd comes in I would like to see Robbo go head to head with him. Bump that old thug back into rehab.
They think this one will be easy , their talking about their hard run home after this weeks given game,
Well lets make them F.....G RUN HOME .

That in no way challenges what I've said. The second part doesn't even make any sense.

What rubbish! You should always feel compassion. Treating it like something you can switch off is inhuman.

So don't. Reserve your empathy for special cases. Like players who just had a close relative die of cancer.

Well that's freaking weird because I don't recall saying anything about any other players. You're trying to broaden this issue to muddy the waters but it's really quite simple: is it okay to boo a young man for leaving, when it's likely he left because of a personal tragedy?

I say it's absolutely wrong and it's something I'm more than prepared to take a stance against.

Booing players in general? Well, like most general principles there are shades of gray. In every case we make decisions about how to judge people based on what we know, a concept you continue to seemingly misunderstand, even though like all of us you apply it every day.

Anyway, this is very tiresome. I find it odious to keep engaging with someone who is defending the right to boo the families of cancer victims.

Frankly it makes my skin crawl.
I can see the point you're trying to make here, but you really have taken it way too far.

The Barometer

BRISBANE

INJURIES

Matthew Leuenberger (knee) 6-7 weeks

Stefan Martin (back) available

Ash McGrath (calf) 1 week

Luke McGuane (knee) TBC

Daniel Rich (knee) season

Brent Staker (calf) indefinite

Patrick Weardon (ankle) 6-8 weeks

ON THE BLOCK: The coach has to make way for some talented names this week, and it won’t be hard after his side copped a belting in Round 9. Youngsters Tom Cutler and Nick Robertson may be given a rest — as could veteran Andrew Raines as the coach looks to the future — while Jordan Lisle may also be under pressure.

ON THE CUSP: Tom Rockliff and Joel Patfull were both withdrawals against North Melbourne in Round 9 and will return, while Matt Maguire will also return after serving his suspension for tripping. Sam Mayes also missed the Kangas clash but should be fine to return, meaning a big boost of class for Justin Leppitsch this week.

BEN BROAD’S FORECAST: No doubt about it, it’s been a tough start to Justin Leppitsch’s coaching tenure. Just one win from nine matches isn’t what the Lions — or the AFL — was after. But things pick up for the once-mighty Brisbane. Matches against Carlton (home), Western Bulldogs (away) and Greater Western Sydney (home) in the coming weeks would seemingly present winning opportunities for the rebuilding club. All at the Gabba will be hoping some ‘W’s are just around the corner.

CARLTON

INJURIES

Tom Bell (finger) test

Patrick Cripps (broken fibula) 2 weeks

Ed Curnow (broken leg) 2 weeks

Chris Judd (hamstring) test

Matthew Kreuzer (foot) 6-8 weeks

Heath Scotland (ankle) season

ON THE BLOCK: Happy days at Blue land after another nailbiting win, with Dylan Buckley the only serious concern after he limped off with a leg injury against the Crows. Selection changes are likely to be minimal but what is up with Lachie Henderson? The damaging swing man of 2013 is struggling to get a kick and when he did have an important one in the dying minutes yesterday, he sprayed it out on the full. If he can find something like last year’s form Carlton will be a much more dangerous proposition.

ON THE CUSP: Mitch Robinson is available after serving his one-match suspension but the big decision is whether to pick Chris Judd to face Brisbane. Would you risk the champ for the flight after about 5min of footy for the year? We think not. Andrew Carrazzo played in the VFL and kicked a goal but wasn’t named in the best players, with Nick Graham (28 disposals) the standout in a 44-point loss to Essendon.

AL PATON’S FORECAST: Winless and friendless five weeks ago, all of a sudden the Blues are knocking on the door of the top eight — just one win behind the seventh-placed Dockers with the Brisbane Lions to come on Saturday. Encounters against Geelong and Hawthorn in the following weeks will provide a truer test of where the Blues are at. They aren’t playing pretty footy and their percentage (86.7 per cent) is an issue, but if they can beat other sides around them like the Crows, they will stay in the mix.

Dunno how anyone can have Carlton as their second team. Nearly the worst supporters - behind Essendon only - and the biggest cheats going around. Screwed Fitzroy for years whilst we made them hundreds of thousands of dollars at PPark. Please Lord let us beat them by a point!

NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO I WONT HAVE THAT!

Lets beat them by 100. :)

Oh thats a shame. Would have been good for the spirit to have him there in indigenous jersey etc.
Who will be back in people's opinion?
Sorry I am a bit bored with the booing talk.

We never know everything about those we judge. Every time we cheer or boo or pass judgement in some other way we base it on what we do know.

You're taking this way too seriously. I get where you're coming from, and I understand the values you're wanting to uphold. But football is tribal, and when someone tucks tail and runs (irrelevant of the reasons) you jeer them when they come back. It's just par for the course.

What rubbish! You should always feel compassion. Treating it like something you can switch off is inhuman.

This is horrendously simplistic and unnecessarily extreme. The world isn't black and white, and aren't going to change anyone's mind about something you clearly feel quite strongly about by trying to reduce it to such simple terms. Part of the delicious complexity of begin vaguely intelligent is the capacity to hold two opposing views/beliefs/ideas in your mind at the same time. It's why paradoxes are fun to think about.

I feel compassion for Docherty's personal situation, but that doesn't stop me from boo'ing him with passion and gusto when he is on the field in enemy colours.

I hear he has been doing his rehab at the Miyagi school of excellence.
Hang on a minute Skoob, I believe Judd has been having a bit of a rough time of things lately. He has had a terrible run with injuries and his spirits must be low. With this in mind, you might want to rethink the need to ridicule him by referring to the eye gouging incident. I am hoping (fingers crossed) that he won't read your post, but he might hear you if you boo him when we play Carlton, so please don't.

I've committed to not saying any more in this thread, karix, so if you want me to respond in detail please PM me.

But suffice to say there are some things that are black and white.

I clicked on this to look at everyone's opinions on changes for the week and all I am reading is booing and cheering crap. Someone please tell me if I am in the right thread or my computer is ****ed up cause on the top of the page I swear to God it says Changes V Carlton (Round 11)

That would be surreal, he's been nicks favourite player for a long time!!
