I know it's only Round 3 but I'd be concerned for my career if I was Wallis or Lipinski.

Wallis is 28 (turns 29 this year), has played over 150 games, even won a Ching IIRC but has now been superseded as a midfielder, partly because of who we've brought in (Dunkley, Smith, Treloar, Vandermeer) but also because the game has moved on. You need pace and flair or huge accumulation numbers in the midfield these days. Wallis has neither. He carved out a niche as a goalscorer last year when our forward line was in horrible shape but it was hard yakka. I thought he'd be given another couple of games to get that form back but with the riches at his disposal Bevo doesn't seem to have that much patience any more.

Where does he go from here? There's no spot for him in midfield. He might regain his goalkicking form but he has just conceded his spot to somebody else who'll be desperate to capitalise, so he'll need to perform very well to get it back. The other option is half-back but his lack of pace and limited range kicking might see players like JJ, Scott, Richards or Butler ahead of him in the queue.

Unless he's been omitted because he's ill I'd say he's in trouble. It's a long season though so it's the best time to be given this sort of shake-up.

I've been dubious about Lipinski for the last couple of years. His early career promise stalled for the reasons most have seen - lack of pace, lack of consistency and so-so defensive skills. This year he started very well in the pre-season and was reported to be in ripping shape. I thought he might have turned the corner but it's back to the same old in-for-a-few, out-for-a-few pattern by the look of it.

Like Wallis his problem is that he's neither fish nor fowl - too slow for a midfielder and not productive enough for a HFF. He too might be eyeing off a HBF position if he can't get any traction as a midfielder / HFF, but with so many candidates for half back I don't know if he'll get the chance.

At least he's young enough to re-start his career at another club, unlike Wallis.

Bevo put the acid on JJ who we must assume has now made the required corrections to his game. This can only be good for the side. Like Richards, JJ had enjoyed a charmed run as an automatic senior selection even when his form was down. Let's hope Bevo has given the same sort of ultimatum to Wallis and Lipinski. Let's also hope Bevo maintains this hard-nosed approach ("perform or else") to the entire squad. The gamble with Scott and McNeil might yet fail but I don't mind him trying it. I can sort of see it with McNeil who should continue to get better but I can't help feeling Scott is almost at his ceiling right now.

For me, captaincy and VC isn't a guarantee of selection each week. You can be a leader and still experience a form slump, so given our depth that many are starting to rave about, why wouldn't we use it and force that competition for spots.

Watching the replay, there was an easy chip inboard to Bailey Dale and instead went long and went out on the full. So perhaps it's not just his lack of goals, but using the VC as an example that if you don't follow the game plan, then don't expect to play the next week.

I personally have no issue with it and fully expect him to fight his way back into the side in the next few weeks.

I felt sorry for him he was so obviously almost completely out of form. The four shots or non-shots at goal, the dropped chest mark running back into the square, the OOF when we could have had a goal. He only did a few of good things, like the mark on the behind line, the mark on the lead and a chain handpass assist in a goal.

If there was one more change, Scott out for Cavarra or West, I'd be really pleased with this side and the changes. I absolutely see Ryan Gardner 2.0 in Scott, he'll play all year with Bevo hoping that'll brute force some quality into him, with a lot of bad turnovers and opponent goals in the meantime.
At least Gardner has apparent points of difference, and is playing a position we lack depth in. Scott just seems a vanilla halfback to me, and that's a position we have covered easily. I hope Scott is forward this week

Think Lippy got dropped for Hunter to move back to a wing. JJ comes in to play the role Hunter had been playing the last two weeks.

Not sure about having both Scott and Wood in the side, possibly Scott swings to the forward line. Doubt we'd be moving Dale after he's gone so well back there. Bit of a head scratcher.

I picked Lipinski to be omitted because of the 50 he gave away. It seems to me this year Bevo is in no frame of mind to easily forgive mistakes like that from the more experienced players. He is demanding the optimal input from everyone, the bar has been raised a lot, as JJ, Cordy and now Wally have found out. Plus the addition of Treloar and Martin, 2 quality players who have also raised the stakes. This year there is the greatest competition for places we have seen for some time, with our minimal injury list 🤞🤞🤞, and the maturity of our core players. Our window is NOW.

Unfortunately when the heat was on last week Lippy was nowhere to be seen. Not sure what he is missing but he's still not quite there.

I’ve never been one to criticise the match committee so I won’t start now. I’m disappointed Wallis has been omitted but anyone expressing surprise need only refer to the ‘elephant in the room’ thread started last week - guess some BF posters got what they wished for.
But match committee selections have got two from two so far & the premiership campaign is played out over the course of a season so no doubt there’s a longer plan in play. #cedenullis

Strangely enough could Lippy and Wallis be victims of playing a weaker side? If it all goes to plan (touch wood) they might have been part of a winning side, hit the scoreboard, etc etc.

But against a Port or Richmond they might have been a liability if not firing 100%.

I'm liking Bevo's ruthless attitude this year.

I wouldn't have been dropping Lipinski, but I AM a fan of making the tough decisions if that's what the match committee decides is best for the side to keep winning. It's better than letting the same out of form players stay in the side perpetually (Richards, JJ and Cordy last year in particular)

Tracker says that Scott was 2nd= overall for total sprints (24) with Hunter and 2nd= with McNeil for repeat sprints(4). Bailey Smith was 3rd for Total sprints. These are across both teams. Smith is a machine and features top 5 across a few categories (so does Hunter but ??? remain for mine).

McNeil seems more toward the attacking zone but Scott's sprinting may well be having an effect in applied or perceived pressure in a defensive sense (closing speed) and this may be where his value is (at the moment).

Wallis' road back is a tough one in my view, summed up well for both he and Lipi in DWs post earlier. Speed will be valued this year, closing or attacking, especially for those on the periphery, and neither Wallis nor Lipi have it. And, for the first time in a while, we look to have more than a few speedsters on our books.
