I totally agree with your first sentence but then the very first player's name I read is Nyuon? That guy couldn't win a one on one contest in the preseason let alone against the likes of Daniher and Hipwood.

I would try Comben on Daniher. Dawson on Hipwood and then use Pink as an intercept defender which was what his main strength seemed to be about his game in the SANFL. Corr can get stuffed. Bergman unfortunately is injured.

I know we are asking way too much of Pink but I have not seen any of that intercepting instinct on display at all.

He doesn’t know when to go with his man and when to peel off.

We obviously need to give him an extended run.

I am trying to find any way we can play fit rather than underdone players, and both McDonald and Corr were brought back WAY too early.

We actually looked quite damaging for a split second when Larkey was up the ground and the three smaller guys were only in the forward line. Looked a bit dynamic and hard for the defenders to match up…

You need talls and contested mids on an ultra narrow ground.

Runners are nowhere near of a necessity on a ground the width of the MCG if it was missing an entire wing.

This will be an absolute slog with plenty of turnovers.

I'd be bringing Phillips in (even though he didn't bash the door down) and both Sellers & Maley.

You are going to need to take contested marks to progress the ball cleanly on this ground.

CCJ, Tucker and Stevo out for mine. Maley to 2nd ruck. Sellars deep forward partner of Larkey, Curtis can move into Stevo's high half forward with Duursma.

I want to drop Stephens, but a reprieve him another week.

Had a look at the two games at Norwood last year:

GWS vs Haw & GC vs Freo.

Average disposal eff in both games was 70% (which is around 8-10% lower than our games the last fortnight)

There was 34 contested marks and 28 contested marks taken for the match in each one of those games.

There was 19 total on Good Friday and 17 against Freo the week before.

Aerial battle is absolutely critical on this ground and it's one of our biggest weakness' at the moment as Larkey is not a massive contested marking threat.

If you are going to inject two talls like Maley and Sellers for any game, it's this one, on this ground.

We will probably require them against Geelong on the Hotdog also which has similar dimensions, so has some long term planning benefits

100% Agree - even with Comben learning the role he is much more ready to play key back - Pink is more a 3rd back.

Send Comben to Hipwood - that will help build his confidence. Larkey is also in need of help so Sellars in for me.

I would prefer to see Phillips in as well. Send Tucker to the wing and drop Stephens.

Exactly my view. We are absolutely ****ed next week and the only things going for us this week are that the Lions are in disarray on and off the field and we will be playing them at a random ground in Adelaide. Let's look at fixing what's not working and throw some stuff at the wall.

It's not necessarily that easy to increase. Young teams typically struggle with doing so as it wrecks them for their other efforts. It's an easy thing for a fit, mid aged team to lift. Unfortunately I doubt it is sustainable for us to do so long term in the context of this season. We can lift, but it won't be massive and will be intermittent until they play more games as a group IMO.
