Never thought I’d say it……. However is it not a coincidence that our 3 best defensive games this year came with Bonar as a key defender? Don’t rate him at all, however maybe he’s just one of those guys that fits Clarkos system?
Feels like he could be an extremely poor man's Gosh Jibson doesn't it. One proper key defender and a bunch of medium defenders was a staple of Clarko's time at the Hawks, and it could work for us too

He straight out betters our best 22 coming in over Howe or Turner (at the least) regardless of respective positions imo.

On top of that he provides grunt to relieve Cunnington and Simpkin and allows the former to go forward.

That's before adding in his ability to play relief ruck which helps keep Comben forward.

Just don't get it.
100% agree.

I was actually shocked when he was demoted to the sub role the first time around and then totally dropped.

I was even more shocked that he didn’t make the team v Gold Coast given the shit they served up in Gather around where the midfield was monstered and on top of that Jy was missing.

The only thing I can put it down to is that his downfall seems to have corresponded with Howe becoming a staple fixture of the side.

The backline looked like an abomination of the weekend.

Logue - solid
Ziebell - solid
McKay - disaster
Corr - disaster
McDonald - usual turnover crap
Sheezel - tagged out of it
Hall - average as usual

Our best games this year have been when we have had players like Goater and Bergman in who can break lines and cut through defensive zones. Except for Sheezel the rest of them don’t have that ability, which pretty much means we play the game in our back half unless our midfield is well on top.

I wouldn't say I've seen a lot of line breaking ability from Goater, tbh. He's seemed a bit lost at the level. Has pace and agility but hasn't put it to much use as yet.

Bergman seems like a Clarko prototype player. Neat disposal which has already cut through defensive zones, despite a lack of noticeable pace. I have been surprised to see him left out for as long as this. Comes across as an ideal half back candidate.

I'd definitely be fascinated to see how a back six of McDonald, JZ, Logue, Bonar, Bergman and Sheez would go. Feels like it'd be worth the experimentation given we're clearly finishing bottom three again

I should have expanded, but it’s also the ability of these guys with more leg speed to shutdown an opponent when the opposition has it. I watch Goater in those first two rounds either putting on pressure or getting a hand in to disrupt.

It also make opposition forwards accountable if they have an opponent making constant attacking runs off half back. At the moment opposition forwards can just sit back and position themselves for the turnover.

Out: Turner, Howe, WAP, Corr, hall
In: Dury, Bergman, Greenwood, Bonnar shiels.

WAP sub. Will spell who out of
Powel, greenwood and Cunnington look the worst.

I'm confused why Greenwood has been consigned to Siberia. Started the year well then had a down patch but came back and posted a pretty good cameo. But suddenly he's the team selection fall guy.
Subbed off round 3.
About a quarter of a game as the sub round 4 + 5.
Full game VFL round 6.

Someone mentioned when he was made the sub in round 4 that he was carrying something. Might be true might not be. Possible that last week was just them getting a full game into his legs after 3 weeks of bits and pieces. Wouldn't be shocked either way regarding his selection this week.

Other possibility is that they don't think he and cunners work together well in the middle shrug

His average performance has been fine.

Wouldn't be surprised, if true. Bloke just hasn't been the same since the hip injury against Carlton. If we're playing him injured, that's a indication of how dreadful our key position drafting has been.
At this stage of what we're doing seems pointless (playing him crippled). Plonk Cunners or someone forward and make the team figure it out - reality is we're not losing games in the forward line at the moment.

If he's out it might mean they think CCJ is viable this week as a presence at least.

Judging by the ease and location of the tickets I got for Saturdays game it seems North supporters may not be coming to watch.

Which of you guys are in and who is not a sucker for punishment ?

It will be good to be at the G upside playing Melbourne there won’t be many of their supporters there either 😉

Too much effort organising tickets in the designated bay when I sit with friends and family - I'll just rock up and figure it out.

I'm finding McDonald's inability to think about what he is going to do with the ball before he gets it infuriating at the moment. Seems whenever he gets the ball he would rather take contact and hold the ball up even if he has players ready on the outside. Needs to start thinking about how he wants to use the ball before he asks for it.
