Chris Davies - PAFC General Manager of Football

Rob Lucas knew in advance that Chris Davies was going to get the job at Port? o_O

Where'd you hear that?

Are you sure that Davies is an Eagles supporter?

As I posted earlier he went for the SACA job that Jamie Cox got. He took the job at WWT as he wanted to move back to SA.

No, I was commenting on Lucas knowing KT had been appointed weeks before it happened.

Davies ... yeah ... I'm thinking it was the Eagles he supported, anyhow not Magpies. Whether he has a soft spot for Port AFL I don't know. That's not the huge problem though, more so when he justified Port have the same sanfl conditions as the crows.

Welcome aboard Chris. He was a decent state cricketer. I was initially surprised by this as he had been mentioned to take over from Lee Whicker and then it was reported he was a candidate to run the Australian Cricketers Association. I see in the article on the club's website that he was " general manager – cricket operations and membership of the Australian Cricketers’ Association." When heard it on the radio I thought he better placed for a general admin role than a specific footy role but seeing he has been chief executive at Woodville-West Torrens between 2008 and 2012 and then SANFL general manager – football, he looks more than capable handling the footy side of things. Also Rohde's role was restructured post 2012 season and Alan Richardson took a lot of his duties away - which I assume Shaun Hart is still doing, so i guess you don't need to be a severe footyhead to do the footy operations role these days

Port Adelaide poaches the SANFL's brightest young light - with all his associated IP - at a time when all the old foges are finally shuffling off.

That independent licence is already paying for itself.

Running WWT would have been like running a fish and chip shop from 2008-2012 with a meat raffle after training. Jury is out but glad to hear he has some finance background for managing Total Player Payments

Looks like a stretch assignment to me, let's hope he has an extra gear as he is in the big league now. Massive massive step up

I guess the role will be different to Rhodes'. Peter was all over recruiting, drafting, supporting the coaches etc. Davies is an administrator not a footy ops guy. Hart will really take over from Rhode, Davies will do contracts etc but won't be the list manager. Is that how I should read this?

Rohde concentrated on contracts/re-signings, watching TPP issues and keeping a tight control - Rob Snowden before him definitely did that, trading for players and picks, player welfare issues, controlling footy ops costs, HR stuff, the SANFL/AFL integration and some other stuff I'm sure. I know KT took game day and general footy stuff away from him and gave it too Richo as he was loaded up when we were short staffed.

Cripps is list manager and Parker is in charge of drafting although they would work closely together and would do so with Rohde.

He is good friends with M.Haysman so might be able to get some pointers off him.

I have a feeling he (Davies) may have had a very serious cancer (leukaemia?) a few years back, treatment of which contributed to his hair-loss.

May date back to his cricket days.

He suffers from cystic fibrosis. I don't recall hearing anything about him having cancer.

Chris Davies will prove to be a very good administrator for Port. I had the good fortune to meet him on several occasions about 12 months ago and was very impressed in the professional manner he conducted himself. It was around the time when Port was trying to sell its AFL reserves model to sanfl clubs and at the end of our first meeting I couldn't resist the opportunity to get his view off the record of his preferred model. All I will say is that I am very comfortable with Chris joining our administration.

I remember reading an article in the Tsier about him, I reckon the second year he was playing state cricket that said having cystic fibrosis will probably mean he has a short career. He did retire at about 25 but he had shoulder injuries so I don't know which reason was the main cause for his early retirement. I do remember him winning some award and he talked about it/him showing kids with the genetic condition can still live their dreams.

I can't believe a 35 year old has been CEO of WWT, SANFL GM and now PAFC Footy ops manager. I'm jealous as of this prick. At 31 my career hasn't gone anywhere near as fast as his but hopefully I'll beat him to the CEO job one day :p

Sometimes it's just fortunate timing. He seems to have made the most of his chances so I guess we'll see if he's up to the task.

Good :)

Chris Davies steps into his new role and talks about his choice of Port Adelaide ahead of the $anfl, $aca and ACA.

“Port Adelaide was attractive for the reasons everyone was seeing for the fantastic football they are showing on the field. But from my SANFL role I was lucky to be able to see what (chief executive) Keith Thomas and (president) David Koch were building off the field. I wanted to be involved in that.”
“And I am really looking forward to that more holistic view of Port Adelaide footy — one club, Power and Magpies,” Davies said. “I may come to this job with no football-playing background, but that allows me to step back and assess if everyone is asking the right questions of themselves ...
“And that gets back to the question of ‘Why Port Adelaide?’ Already I have seen a level of feedback among everyone that ensures we will take this club forward. Everyone is working off the same page — and everyone is constantly trying to get better.
“That clear and precise nature of the people at the Port Adelaide Football Club right now is a lure to this club.”
