Bump.

4 year contract for Lobbe (though that was probably finalized before he came in)
Essentially a 7 year deal for Hartlett
2 years for Neade
1 year for Schulz
No backup rucks this year
No backup tall forwards this year and probably next
Toumpas
Trading out picks for Ryder and Dixon and not getting back into the draft

So he's about on par with Rhode then yeah? and because of his medical condition, he is unlikely to be here for the long haul.

What was the point?

Medical condition? Are you talking about Cripps?

Davies is one man in a team. The football department collectively need to take responsibility for list management.

Medical condition?
Cystic Fibrosis.

Davies has the final say. The coaches might be looking at short term fixes to save their own ass.

If they want to keep their favourites like Neade around for another 2 years he has to say no, we're not doing that. He's built like a 10 year old and doesn't touch the ball.

You can't shit bag the Schulz one. He did all the preseason, plays in the trial games and his back goes in the 1st game against Saints. That's bad luck not bad management. Giving Schulz 2 years - which is what he wanted - would have been bad management.

Absolutely no point from outside the club trying to critique the performance of someone whose job is essentially done inside the club. You don't know what offers HH had from other clubs, you don't know what instructions Kenny gave as to the priority to be attached to keeping HH. Same for all the players you mentioned. In short, you know jack about his job.

As to raising his health as an issue, that's just bad form and I hope your post is deleted.

We're hindsighting a fair bit at the moment. Many people were happy to have players locked away for extended periods firmly believing we would get some success, it just looks really bad now. Not saying it wasn't a mistake at all though.

Hartlett you could at least make a case for but still, a 5 year extension (which hasn't even started yet ha!) was pretty over the top.

Lobbe's contract is just indefensible after one OK season.

Neade's deal was also unnecessary even though it's much shorter.

Some would argue we shouldn't have given him 1 year.

Who cares. He was under contract.

They were all terrible deals at the time.

And those some would be bloody dumb given he kicked 44 goals in 2015, our 2nd highest goal kicker and a long way to 3rd, and the state of our KPF stocks.

I'm still annoyed about Neade getting a two year extension. At least Lobbe, Broadbent and Hartlett were actually in good form when we decided to give them unnecessarily long contracts. Neade hasn't been in form since 2013.

The Hartlett issue is a clear play by the Club to put the wind up the playing group.

Execute one to educate a thousand.

We will need to sacrifice someone senior to stop the rot unfortunately.
Ken tried to keep the group together and it has backfired. Supporters have been calling for heads to roll. No way can the club accept mediocrity and find all their work undone. We have become stagnant and need a major refresh. I like Hammer but he has a lot of currency and has really under performed this year.

I know how you feel Schultzy...
It is possibly a spin off from the, 'we have a top four list' syndrome that seemed to inhabit the halls at Alberton up until this year. We thought these guys could deliver so we signed them to protect ourselves from poachers. The problem is they, or our structure, or both are not as good as we thought and we are left with a few long term deals that we would be better off without. This not only applies to players but some of our Coaching staff are also locked in long term and we would be better off if they weren't.

If we learn one thing from the past four years it is hopefully not to stitch things up long term until we are certain they are worth long term stitches.

The club over rated the list. The strange part for me is the long contracts that came for Boak and Gray to go into their 30's, Hartlett who finds it hard to run out a game without snapping his hammys, Lobbe and we gave up huge prices for Dixon and Ryder plus their long term contracts.

I remember Rohde and previous eras saying that 3 year deals were the max.

We overrated this list and imagine when we have Boak and Gray at 32/33 on $800k each plus Hartlett at 30 in a back pocket on plenty plus 35 year old Ryder and Dixon beat up at 30 with his ankles.

It's a brutal game and unless you have the Geelong and Hawthorn core (they broke the rules) you need 20-24 year old run and gun machines. It's a young persons game, players generally are gone by 29, their best football is behind them

Tough but true, we got way ahead of ourselves and potentially have set ourselves back 3-4 years to shed the mess in contracts.

I hope I am wrong

Firstly, how do you know the specific $$$$ of the contracts?
Secondly, it's now a different environment from when Rohde made that statement. The players have more power and want even more. If you look across all clubs, these longer contracts are becoming the norm. Our neighbours just re-signed Jenkins and Crouch on long deals, even after seeing what happened over here with Hartlett and Lobbe.. Free agency has changed the landscape. but, as with Hartlett, clubs will also need to find way to get some negotiating power back.
