Today was the best performance for an individual I have seen this season, and I've watched every game. Jude Bolton against Essendon is a close second. The difference tonight was the conditions made it extremely hard for players to stay on their feet or hold the ball. Then it went dry and yet Judd never went dry, regardless that he had someone breathing down his neck everytime. And pretty much everytime he was near the ball he managed to create contest. And then more remarkably managed to win most of them.

So he is a champion player, but surely even Blues fans can admit that he does tend to get more soft free kicks than any other player in the competition. He gets deserved ones too, don't get me wrong, but it seems Judd is on the right end of the umpire in every match, whether it be from being allowed an eternity to get rid of the ball, to minor holding calls.

Pretty sure any of the Selwood boys have him covered.
Besides getting "soft" frees is better than giving soft frees (i.e. Buddy).

What this does is infuriate opposition fans, because the guy is that good he doesn't really need the umpires help and as a result you get ridiculous blinded hatred and people questioning his standing in the game...add this to the Brownlow voting and the baffling MRP decision not to charge him and well...everybody hates the teachers pet.

Can't say I agree with this part. He doesn't get a free ride from the umps imo. He generally manages to get a handball off before it's a holding-the-ball decision, he's just that good. He probably won't get those bullshit h-t-b calls that lesser players tend to be called for occasionally, but it doesn't really go the other way where he'll get extra time to dispose of the ball.

Judd's main weakness is his inability to kick goals, he often misses sitters that other players like Ablett/Swan kick, so that element of his game isn't elite, but he more than makes up for it with his stoppage work, he shades Swan, and to a lesser degree, Ablett in that respect. The way he can just extract the ball and get it moving when the game looks locked up, just amazing.

Got murdered by my friends on Facebook pre-game by saying Judd was bigger than any other royalty on TV tonight. Vindicated. Wish he'd come back to Melbourne, his childhood team.

Champion.

If Judd could kick he would be beyond scary!

Was dominant as can be today but god did he butcher the ball, still comfortably best on ground which is scary. Everything was contested but I only remember him actually hitting a target once. That said it was not ideal conditions for precise skills and he was phenomenal.

Do wish he would stop trying to milk free kicks, he isn't a diver like Monfries or Didak but it really does sour watching him because you can tell he knows that if he throws his arms up he will get the free, just play football mate you are good enough to not need that crap.

edit. It's a shame that none of the Swans looked at him and thought they might try as well, embarrassed to be a Swans fan tonight, was one of our worst performances in the last 15 years since I've been a following.

So you reneg on your comment he is an athlete first footballer second? The skillful players stand out more in the wet.

Outstanding individual performance, doubt he'll be able to reproduce such a monumental effort week in week out to get carlton over the line though.

I hope he doesn't have to. I think our midfield group is overall a bit harder and more mature than previous years and I'd be interested to see how we played without him. Judd will do what Judd does as long as he's playing, be ruthless in attack and hunt the ball, you can't ask him to hold back.

Never seen him do it once and it sh1ts me to tears, he along wil GAjr have to run with one arm being held every second of every match. Goodes was the one tonight who was yapping to umps tonight.

One of the top few mids in the last decade. Sure he has his flaws, but nobody is perfect.

Only question mark is his body and will he have the same impact when he loses a yard of pace?

It's a little sad that you can't enjoy watching one of the great players play.

Top notch post quinz. Real footy people enjoy watching great players play, no matter which team they play for. Dammit I hate collingwood but gee thee good to watch!! It's the armchair NFL/a league/NBA/Nrl/afl tossbags who read the paper and Internet yet have no idea about the true spirit of the game who are blinded to the fact that Judd is one of the best players. Ever!!

Correct. He is a super player. Would easily fall into a Top 50 players of all time list as we speak. Where he sits in that that company I don't know. I would say he is somewhere around the Voss & Hird area. Not quite as good as Carey, Matthews etc, but pretty close. He's only 27 as well. Gun footballer.

We have lost 1 game, so I think hes ethier been dominating every week for us...or we have other players helping...you choose?
Of course there'll be games when you don't rely so heavily on him, it all depends on the opponent. One would hope your side can take care of the likes of Richmond, GC and struggling Crows in Melbourne with the amount of first rounders running around for you.
But you can't seriously tell me you would have even got close to Sydney without Judd.

The reality of the situation is you've failed your two sternest tests this year even with Judds regular high level output. And it took superhuman effort by him to get you over the line against the Swans who aren't contenders in my eyes. Gibbs shut down Goodes, Judd went ballistic, the result was really inevitable.
Still, your lesser lights have the whole season in front of them to come to the party.
But yeah, I was in awe of Juddy tonight.

God I hate the BF way of doing that, where did I mention Goodes at all, how is he relevant to what I said? I agree entirely that Goodes spends far too much time staging himself and the umpires have worked it out and wont pay him any frees any more even when they are there because he stages instead of just marking it.

Judd is one of the worst for playing for free kicks, if you don't see that then you are just a blind homer, the amount of times he throws his hands up after dropping the ball trying to win frees is ridiculous. It really takes away from what he does 90% of the time and I just wish he would stop doing it because he is fantastic to watch outside of that.

Once he starts performing like this on a regular basis, then maybe you blue supporters can start comparing him to Swan.

pfft Judd has been doing these things since your mate Swan was with his mate Tarrant beaming off his eyes at the onelove playing for the Collingwood reserves!!

Swan is nowhere near Judd as a player, Swan gets cheap kicks which make up half his possessions Judd has all his possessions contested...when they matter most

..he already has, not as crazy quick as he was at west coast.. ..rejigged his game style with us already.. ..even if he loses another yard with such a great inside contested ball winning and clearance game he should still dominate.. ..plenty of 'slow' footballers over the years have proven that if you're good enough you can make up the loss of pace..

Swan is every bit the player that Judd is right now. He hasn't had as good a career but they are equals on a football field.

Agreed. Tonights game only had 1 or 2 plays where he even used his speed, it was mostly brute strength and his ability to get his hands free. Judd will be fine without his speed, not as damaging but will still be an elite insider midfielder. To be honest his kicking the past couple of seasons has had more of a negative impact on his outside game than any speed loss.

Had a chuckle at the post calling Judd a seagull.:D

Judds ability to kick goals and his drop in kicking efficiency have definitely been a side effect of his groin injury.

I also think that his transition to an almost pure inside mid has contributed to a drop in accuracy.

Has bulked up a little since being at Carlton and relies on his tremendous strength through the hips to stay balanced and standing in contested situations.

Dosn't have that naturally low centre of gravity of say an Ablett and I think the above combination has somewhat effected his flexibility and therefore kicking.

Even with a decrease in workload I don't know if he will ever regain the kicking accuracy, penetration and goal kicking ability that he had at WC but his best is still unbelievable.
