Definitely sounds like Cookie has lost the plot, is doing it all for his ego and needs to go...

Those 20 year forward looking infrastructure plans and debt clearance schemes reek of his ego and losing the plot. Must be one of those Robin Hood type ego things... take from the rich and distribute to the masses for the betterment of the club going forward...
Praised Cook for his redevelopment of KP, never said otherwise, all I questioned and still do is the timeline and funds diverted to it at the expense of our football department. I do think Cook is desperately trying to time the completion of stage 5 with his retirement far more than timing it to coincide with a Premiership for Geelong, and I'm sorry but I think that's putting his ego over the club and fans. After all what would you enjoy more? A Geelong flag, or a new stand that the greater majority of Geelong fans will never set foot in?

Cook will leave us a mess on field as will Scott, when that happens I hope you take solace in sitting at GMHBA stadium looking at the stage 4 and 5 redevelopment. I know Cook certainly will.

Chum is in the water.

Bullshit with every keystroke.

How did he leave West Coast on field? What happens when our current mercenary experiment fails in the next few years? Do you really think Cook will support a proper rebuild? I'll tell you what he and Scott will do and that's more of the same topping up the list with mercenaries for mediocre results till in about 4/5 years time stage 5 will be done, Cook will retire, Scott will be gone, and we'll be a bloody mess on field. By that time we'll have few players with real currency with which to secure high draft picks and in this dire situation we'll be forced to begin the full rebuild we should've started 4/5 years before.

Notice he doesn't mention finals, or the fact every team in the comp has transitioned its list over the last 6 years as much or more than we have; Cook is besotted with Scott and doesn't have the guts to make a hard call on him, like many on here he fears change at the top despite the countless examples locally and internationally in recent years of a change of coach/manager bringing improvement in results. Geelong are supposedly in the game of success or 'greatness,' well where is it? Is the definition of losing a Prelim in the first 10 minutes 'greatness?' does winning 2 finals from 8 attempts in the last half decade exhibit 'greatness?' Is consistently losing after the bye 'greatness?' Is failing to develop any A-grade player in the last 6 years 'greatness?' Is having to employ a DOC because of communication problems Chris Scott has with players 'greatness?' Is trading away draft picks for mature age recruits and mercenaries with a success now mantra then not achieving that success 'greatness?'

Greatness might be our tradition (2007-20011) but it most certainly doesn't seem to be our 'Ambition' with our current football department strategy.
BS Blighty no one skips your posts as you can see by the amount of replies. Some people may be happy that we moved up a few spots but in a year that we had a favourable draw, hardly any injuries and the inclusion of some handy players including Danger the improvement was inevitable even with the shitfull coaching but highly doubt we see any improvement this year so brace yourself for more excuses, actually i'll float a couple up at you, we transitioned Bartell and Enright, CS has only been at the helm 7 years and needs another 5 or 6 to show his true colours, Mot's went on an eating binge midseason and lost a few yards in pace, i'm sure you've heard them all before.

There is only so much of the pie to go around.
You want it last in the now.
He chose to spend it on the future of the club and clearing its debt to, IMO, ensure its relevance now and into the future -being 15-20 years. Which of course contributes to making GFC and KP a destination place to want to be - which ties into drawing players to the club and thus on field successes in the future.
Add that to an expanded footy department, more space and resources to operate in. I'll take sitting anywhere in the world, looking at what Cook has done both off the field and the flow on effects that lead to the on field and be very happy with his work.

You want the big bang now and then be gone.
Cook goes for now and the future.

I'll back the bloke that has you covered on this 7 days a week and twice on Sunday.

Some will still offer the same old excuses but to be fair to others on here I think the tide is turning and if we don't get results this season their desperate search for excuses will finally and justifiably turn to anger and frustration at Scott.

I don't want that at all?!? I believe both can be done but on a longer timeframe (say an extra 3 to 4 years) so not so much of the clubs money has to be taken from the football department now in order to finish these projects sooner simply to fit Cook's retirement timeline. Who doesn't want the financial future of the club solidified for the next 20 years? Cook saved the club and is a great manager but he's also human and I think his ego is controlling him a bit too much these days and as a result his attention is too much on construction of the stands rather than the team.

And all of, as you call it, Cookie's retirement plans are just unilateral decision's he's made one up. No board signing off in it to suit his alleged retirement schedule. And as a member have actually voted for it - unless you attended the meetings as a member an objected to the stadium redevelopment.

And sure. Lets drag out construction stages out over an additional 4 years.
Great idea.
A permanent construction site for a footy stadium for 4-5 years.

Good real world suggestion.

Not sure I'd agree with everything here. He's not doing a great job at Port.
That said as a former assistant and player here respect should be more forthcoming, as should that to Mackie when I've seen a couple in the minority slag him off rather disgustingly of late.
He's a flawed veteran who I'd like to see replaced in the team by a flawed youngster. Great servant over the years, but one who has declined and doesn't complement the team as well any more. Despite this I accept he'll likely remain in the team, but like Blicavs it's not a position I personally feel inclined to agree with. Same happened with Gerrard at Liverpool in his last year, and there was no less respect for him. I don't think there should be a vow of silence based on past glories.

No, you drag out the funding for stage five for another 3/4 years, not the construction itself. Cook has an iron grip on finances at the club because he has the runs on the board but it also unfortunately aids him in running his own timeline of funding on these projects and when you're building stage 4 with new luxurious quarters for the Pivots, and board members in general, it's not too hard to convince them the footy department needs to take a hit so that their new facilities can be built a bit sooner. As I said I hope the same doesn't happen for stage 5.

Drawing players to the club possibly. No guarantee at all about success though. That remains to be seen.

So in a financial environment where raising money is hard enough, and they are seeking to clear the debt, you want to create the need for more funding and take on more debt.

Interesting perspective.

Ill take the no debt option thanks and cap ex paid off in full.

Id say about equal to that of drafting players.

Success requires both avenues of development and recruitment to be successful no doubt. Not suggesting otherwise.

And I never said it guarantees anything did I? I said they can flow into success - never guaranteed it. Shiny new things entice people. So does ethos and work ethics. You need all the pieces. The stadium and making the place a destination is part of that.

Well I'm talking about stage 5 now as stage 4's all but done, but in an environment of low interest rates and with the extra money we would've made off KP had it not been half demolished last year I think we could've held out for a few more years without much addition to our debt and without sacrificing so much money needed for the footy department. Doesn't matter now though as it's done - just hope Cook doesn't prove me right by continuing to take from the footy department to build stage 5 faster than it needs to be.

Perhaps. I'd prefer to fully invest in the football department first. To me there's nothing more important than how fully you can develop the players. Over and above anything.

It's all very well planning and building stands that will supposedly guarantee a strong financial future but wouldn't it be a foundation built on sand if the team on field isn't set up for success well in to the future?

A ruck coach and the same number of recruiting staff as other clubs would be a good start...

We were talking about ken Hinkley

Your reaching mate I don't always agree with CD quite often don't so yes its top 10% of position.

But you also need a formula to rank and grade the players. Your hypothetical scenario needs to get a little closer to reality before I could address it
Well, no. My example is just that the top 10% in a position is not an unambiguous indicator of a players quality and I wanted to know who he was competing against to be rated as elite in mid/fwd as he was only rated relative to those players, not to anyone else in the competition.

The 07-11 period will have a huge upside for the club in years to come and that will be from on field success, can you imagine how many kids would have switched to Geelong cause we were so successful in that period, membership is everything to a club, the more we swing our way the healthier we'll be.

Collingwood had a great period in the 40's-50's which set up a supporter base that virtually guarantees them financial support forever. Bulldogs for the past few years concentrated mostly with on field performance, now that will pay off.

If we concentrate in building grandstands and cut footy department funds, that will lead to no on field success, so who the xxxx wants to support us then let lone fill those seats.

It might be a business but primarily it's a footy club first which thrives on success to stimulate growth, people need to do their figures and see who the rich clubs are, you might be surprised to find out that the ones that have the most on field success will be right up there.

So true. All of Hawthorns success off the field comes from the 80's really.
They were the second smallest club apart from North once, even when they were always winning.
20 years on all the kids that decided to go for them in that period came out of the woodwork as adults. Now they're huge.
