Clarko on AFL 360 23/4/14

What foxtel should have done in the offseason is have all 18 coaches sitting around the table discussing various topics about the game with one another.

That would be a fascinating doco to watch. I would love to know their views about what is good and bad about the modern game.

For me these people, their opinions should matter most in being pivotal about the rules and state of the game.
That would be fantastic to watch. I'd also love to see one just with the top 4 coaches.

And just wanted to say fantastic interview with Clarko. I have a new-found respect for the bloke. :thumbsu:

I have to admit that of all the bullshit that gets tossed around on these forums the one thing that irks me is the crap/hatred/actual slander I read about Clarkson. I have met or had something to do with a few footy people in my life and Clarko is absolutely the most grounded, flat out pleasant of anyone. And it's daylight second too.

He might have made a couple of pretty minor blunders when the red mist takes over but I frankly don't give a shit. Gentleman, loves footy, brilliant with kids and not even remotely up himself.

But, but, surely not

Clarko - he yelled at some umpire one time, didn't he?

Yep
This is so true
I actually had a kick of the footy with him a few years back at a VFL game, after I took his head off with an errant kick

I think a lot of the coaches are descent blokes, but some are very cocky and arrogant, well thats how the come across for me.

The ones I am looking at are MM, Bomber and Lyon in particular. Not a fan of their general demeanor at press conferences.

I would have thought you guys that have the reputation for one of the better kicking teams would welcome this change? With that said, pressure does amazing things like on Monday when both teams shanked kicks understandably.

I am not a fan at the moment of the "maul" it really is detracting the beauty of our game, the constant stoppages, players all running with the flow of the ball, I think something needs to change. But these changes need to be implemented in the NAB Cup and not during the season proper, I would also like to see at least two players always being in the defensive/attacking 50 like a kind off side rule. Again this needs to be trialled and examined before changing the dynamics of our game.

Of corse it has an effect
That extra 5 metres changes game plans

The maul will fix itself up

It's the implementation of the current rules which has lead to this mess, introducing a new rule will see more tactics to counter this mess

Sometimes to go forwards, you must go backwards

Im not entirely sure about that. At the moment the players are fit and strong and can run out matches.

One of the major problems with the maul which doesnt come across on the TV is that when there is a turnover, players cant go forwards because there is no one to kick to.. The congestion around the ball is like a bottleneck at the moment So what do they do they go backwards then wide across to the other side of the ground. Which really does slow the game up.

Unofficially we do have off-side rule in the game when there is a centre bounce after a goal is scored. I do think though that something like this needs to be implemented around the ground, because having 36 player for a ball up is not attractive football. I am not sure what the solution there is but I know that something needs to change for the overall benefit of the game.

I do think the player that goes in hard for the ball has to be rewarded because at the moment, you have players that sit back wait for the opposition to go in hard and then 3,4,5 players then pile on top of him making it impossible to get the ball out which leads to holding the ball decision.

The rushed behind was implemented well by the Hawks after you guys were smart enough to exploit the rules as it was back then in 09 final. (Guerra said that it was the teams idea and not the coaches apparently). Naturally the rules changed to avoid that, Im sure the rules will be changed to negate the "maul".

I still believe making the rules such that if two players are already involved in a contest, the third player in to tackle, dive on top (not bump) etc... gives away the free.
This gives bigger stronger blokes a chance to show their physical advantage and also gives the umpire a chance to see if the ball is being held in or disposed of correctly. Not being able to pile into every contest removes some of the need to be at the contest in the first instance so it might spread them about a bit more too.
