Roos took over from Eade at Sydney after being a caretaker coach when Terry Wallace was assumed to be the new coach

He’s the only genuine caretaker I can think of that’s won a premiership after being in that role

Not caretakers as such, but coaches who have replaced the incumbent after being an assistant at the club :

• Longmire taking over from Roos
• Chris Scott taking over from Thompson
• Goodwin taking over from Roos (which was planned in advance)
• Buckley took over from Malthouse and was a Dom Sheed drop punt away from winning a flag

Most other caretakers becoming the senior coach have ultimately failed - Teague, Shaw, Bolton off the top of my head didn’t work out. There’s plenty of others

Thanks Keys for your work.

My top of the head list had overlooked Eade and Roos baton passing. Like you I am struggling to come up with a situation where the ‘caretaker’ was a long term success.

That’s not say Schofield isn’t the right person - I genuinely don’t know and sincerely want a good process to get the best person.

Apart from KJ we’ve done ok in coach appointments. I’ve overlooked RA (who I thought was hard done by - W/L was ok for first year in AFL) and JT (we were still learning how to become part of national comp.

Hopefully The Don also runs the ruler over recruitment, drafting, list management, development and Beagles. Seems fitness and medical are now better placed but still need work in other areas for mine.

dunno what schoey is like inside the 4 walls but his press conferences are pretty robotic. Says the right things but needs to expand his go to vocabulary book a bit. 'umm.. arr.. insert cliche'. might be a bit nervous but will need to polish that up a bit.

We've seen quite a few different people rolled out through the media this year I wonder if that was a bit of a contingency plan from pyke from d1

Schofield is the most qualified albeit at WAFL and AFL assistant .
Taking Subiaco from a rabble to three time premiership was always impressive .

Rabble? They won four premierships in the nine years prior to him taking over.

The changes he made was been a huge positive.

Dropping Darling as his first move was what has been needed for so long.
We can never go with a tall forward line of Waterman Allen Williams and Darling.

Absolutely killed us.
Three of them at the absolute max in the side. The fact that Williams is showing he has the ability to play back puts him in as a must.

Toss up between Allen and Darling. Allen has much better reach but he was pretty poor on the weekend and if he can't be consistent then I wouldn't be against dropping Allen for Darling. Waterman is a must.

I think we should stay with
Waterman Jack Williams and one of Allen/Darling for remained of the season. Trew and Luke Edwards showed something and another positive move by Schofield. We must get the most out of our mids.

Things I'd like to see going forward.
Bailey Williams is a problem as we need more depth in our rucks. Williams has been poor and if we had someone that's capable he probably would be making way but unfortunately there's no one to replace him.
As much as people might say Allen didnt do a whole lot, he kept Harris Andrews somewhat accountable. Andrews only got 5 intercept possessions! Thats an absolute win

If no Allen, Andrews might be willing to be more attacking, or maybe Andrews goes to Waterman and makes Watermans life hard.

Andrews is probably the best defender in the comp, no shame in getting well held there.

Allen well ahead of Darling

Also won't have to end the career of former team mates. Some (Voss) have really struggled with this.

Woosha had no problem doing so and he had a lot more ex players at the club when he went back.

From Cox's time only the following are on the list:

Darling , Gaff, Sheed, Gov, Barrass, Yeo and Cripps.

Not sure he is super close with any of them?

I don't get questioning whether a caretaker can transition to a senior coach. Schofield, just like Cox, Hansen, Graham, etc are all assistant coaches. Schofield just gets to prove his candidacy on the job rather than with a powerpoint presentation.

I liked what I saw from Schofield so far. Whether its team selection, new roles for some players or the energy with which everyone played. If this keeps up for the rest of the year, I'd say he'd be a good chance of getting the job.

The question is because the caretaker is generally the senior assistant from the club wanting a new coach, so they have been a part of the failings in some way. Their ideas might be influenced by the former coach.

Its just good to get a new set of eyes

Allen also has had a long lay off, takes time to get the whole groove back.

The dream scenario is

Swans win flag
Cox wants to stay at Sydney
Longmire views the flag a good moment in time to exit and hand over to cox.
West coast appoint Longmire as new head coach.

As long as the club does it's due diligence which I expect it will then I am sure the best available candidate will be appointed.
We all have an opinion on who we want or who we think it should be but a process must be taken and I am sure that process has been in place for a little while already.

90s / 2000s

Won't win this season either .

They missed finals only three times between their 1988 flag and their 2004 flag. Then they won four flags before Schofield took over.

Can you just admit they were never a basket case? (Or a rabble, you actually said rabble, my bad)

I’ve never regarded Schofield as a serious option, just your classic welcome caretaker who’d need a superb run to shift the dial. He might not even apply. Good luck to him but with the stature of the club and rarity of coaching change and being first in the vacancy queue you’d have to do a full broad process to get the best candidate possible, and big names would be asking for a couple years.

Maybe my impression is wrong and he doesn't have higher energy levels than Simpson. Or maybe Simpson aged quicker due to being senior coach. But Schofield looks like he has the energy and Simpson looked totally cooked by the end.

And i could be wrong again, but i think it looks like Matthew Lloyd is right and Cox is not that kean on the gig. Total radio silence from him. He is not flying his flag or putting the "I'm available" sign up. Buckley is out lobbying for the job on Fox, Montgomery has his boss out in the media talking him up. But Cox has said nothing. And journos would have been ringing and texting him for an on or off the record statement or quote and he has clearly given them absolutely nothing. No public endorsements from Longmire which would only be because Cox has told him to say nothing. He is not obliged to publicly lobby for the job and maybe that is not his style, but i just think the complete and total silence from his end, coupled with him knocking back the offer last year and now Victorian commentators are saying they are hearing he doesn't really want the job means he probably does have reservations.
It would be fairly unprofessional of him to be campaigning for another job while he should be focused on getting Sydney into a grand final. Likewise, it would be unprofessional of us to be trumpeting that we have approached him while Schofield is acting in the role. I have little doubt the club will contact everyone they want to, but the fact we haven't heard anything could just be a sign of professionalism from all involved.
