What are examples of each that you're thinking of?
Chris Scott is a few minutes older than Brad, hence why he has coached 2 flags to Brad's 0.

Most of the first time premiership coaches were young coaches. Just use WCE as example: Worsfold , Simpson and even Malthouse were quite young.
Older and reused coaches have not shown too much success in recent history. Probably Malthouse is the only one I can think of.
Edit: Examples from other clubs: Goodwin , Scott, Clarkson, Hardwick ... were young coaches

Working backwards, first time premiership coaches :
2023 - McRae was 50, in his 2nd year as a senior coach
2021 - Goodwin was 44, in his 5th year as a senior coach
2018 - Simpson was 42, in his 5th year as a senior coach
2017 - Hardwick was 45, in his 8th year as a senior coach
2016 - Beveridge was 46, in his 2nd year as a senior coach
2012 - Longmire was 42, in his 2nd year as a senior coach
2011 - Scott was 35, in his 1st year as a senior coach
2008 - Clarkson was 40, in his 4th year as a senior coach
2007 - Thompson was 43, in his 8th year as a senior coach
2006 - Worsfold was 38, in his 5th year as a senior coach
2005 - Roos was 42, in his 3rd year as a full time senior coach (coached 10 games as caretaker coach in 2002)
2004 - Williams was 46, in his 6th year as a senior coach
That group of 12 have won 19 of the last 20 premierships. Malthouse in 2010 was the only coach with previous coaching experience to win a flag
If history is any guide then, we’re looking for a first time coach somewhere in his late 30’s to early 40’s. McRae (48) was the oldest of that group when starting and Worsfold (33) the youngest
Of the names being bandied about as potential first time coaches this is oldest to youngest :
52- Hickmott
51- Montgomery
49- Schofield
42- Giansiracusa
41- Graham, Skipworth, Hansen
34- Selwood

That’s not true we got Harley. Apparently we have messed up the rebuild by not swapping pick #1 for some picks at the end of the first round.
Has there been any talk, other than in this thread about Selwood?

It is a bit silly to use won a flag/didn't win a flag as the definitive marker of whether somebody's coaching career was either a success or a dismal failure. There is a lot of grey area in between. And no matter how good you are as a coach you have to have the cattle, other departments at the club behind you producing at a high level and pinch of luck too to win a flag.
I find it a bit laughable to posters are talking about the new coach in terms of whether they can "take us to a flag" or not. We are a million miles away from contending for a flag. The goals for the next 3 - 5 years should not include any discussion of or consideration of tilts at a flag. Lets start with getting genuine four quarter efforts game in and game out from the playing group as a first step. Lets hire the next coach on the basis of their ability to get us to that first building block rather than pontificating about whether they can win a flag or not.

I strongly disagree. The comp is super weak these days, a team needs a few stars across different lines and tactical innovation can get them far. Look at Richmond threepeat or Pies 2023.
Our spine is good, we need a boost in the middle and some outside run (which can easily be traded in). Get Harley to his potential in a couple of years and we could easily be contending. Our squad is drastically underperforming with its talent.
