Coaches Under Pressure for 2011

What about Rocket, by the way ? Is another prelim good enough - 4 prelims no Gf would be a record wouldn't it ?

Came in to mention this. The club announced that a GF was the target for 2010. Now a few things unhinged this, including injuries at the end.

But there were some unhappy people at the way we played against the big teams last year.

Will be an interesting year at the Kennel....

Meh Eade will be right. Doggies and their supporters have this "Near enough is good enough" mentality. Exactly like St Kilda. Finishing 2nd, 3rd or 4th is an achievement in their eyes

Hird is and isn't under pressure.

There is no way they'd sack a legend after 1 year, but at the same time, it's looking like Essendon board/fans don't really handle patience very well, so he could rapidly burn through a lot of goodwill and be shaky in 2-3 years unless there are clear signs of a turnaround.

Ross Lyon would be under enormous pressure to deliver a premiership to St Kilda. Another failure in the finals could see him given the boot. St Kilda have form with doing that Stan Alves and to a lesser degree Grant Thomas.

John Worsfold - Three years out of the finals is a club record for West Coast and a fourth would see him lose his job. Won the club's first wooden spoon in it's history in 2010 and no light and the end of the tunnel in the near future.
I doubt it.. club will not sack its favourite son.. he will only leave on his own accord..

I think he will leave mid season if we are not still in contention to finish around 8th to 10th...

Agree with all these, but suggest Chris Scott as opposed to John Longmire?

I mean Geelong are now accustomed to success. Will they go easy on Chris? They've already come out and said the believe they can challenge for next year.

Will it be a minimum of Prelim or bust for Chris in year one?

He'll definitely be watched... but under pressure, probably not. The older players will be under pressure to perform IMO.

We have some genuine ageing reasons why we wouldn't be as good this year, as well as the whole losing Ablett thing. Its not going to be like a Essendon case where they say they want to make finals, then it explodes in their face. I think most people expect us to play finals, maybe deep finals, just because of the list.... but if don't and we seriously fizzle out, it'll be the older players over Chris that are under pressure.

this is a redundant statement. Any coach who doesn't perform over a 3 year period is going to be under pressure.

As for the Essendon board/fans not handling patience well, what a load of rot. You've made this observation from a grand sample of one decision?

OT, Ratten is under enormous pressure. His board have hired an excellent replacement already; a man who has all the skills & - more importantly - the burning desire to be a Senior Coach. Richardson is breathing down Ratten's neck big time, & has a 3 year contract compared to Ratten's 1...

I would have thought that Bailey is under huge pressure.

Entering his fourth year without a finals appearance, with 123 no 1 picks, no debt, 11 of their first 12 games in Victoria this year(can you believe that?) and many of the football world saying they have such a gun young list.

Needs to make the finals at least in his fourth year and the club entering the fourth year of a rebuild.

Been given a dream run by the media after their early home wins against crows and tigers

It won't necessarily be Scott in the gun if Geelong play poorly next year, rather there will be a lot of pressure to retire most of the 28+ brigade and rebuild.

You idiot.

Lyon is our 2nd most successful Coach ever, back to back Grand Finals of which both we were a ounce of luck away from winning, Thomas' sacking had more to do with him personally than with the results in Finals.

Current President also said that he would be happy for Ross to be there for a long time and that was before we made a Grand Final.

In addition to the obvious ones: James Hird.

As a first year coach of a list with frailties he should be given plenty of time a la Hardwick at the Tiges.

But a combination of the manner in which Knights was handled and the 'Messiah' reputation of Hird with Essendon supporters, could see him under pressure much earlier than expected.

Only from moronic supporters such as those that ring up SEN.

In order;

1. Voss - another year like he just had, and there's no reason in the world to think it won't be, he'll be perhaps the worse coach that modern football has ever seen. And with Knights and Sheedy Mark II in the ranks that's saying something.
2. Clarkson - if they don't do anything significant like make a prelim with and be in a good position to win it then Kennett will sack him fast
3. Ratten - If Blues even hold ground he is toast
4. Worsfold - another repeat and it's over
5. Eade - noone expects them to be any good this year except the deluded internal group, so internally a lot of pressure. Externally not that much
6. Ross Lyon - most people think saints have had their time and the administration might think the same if the drop off is big
7. Dean Bailey - promise has to turn to performance this year while he still has a pretty good mix of age and youth and all the high draft picks you could dream of. Missing the 8 is not an option this year. Will his copy geelong game plan stack up?
8. Longmire - coming after a much loved coach with a team that went up this year is pressure especially with 2nd year blues on the horizon for the likes of Danaberry, Dennis-Lane and the ageing of the some other
9. Chris Scott - big promises without a lot to back it up
10. Mark Harvey - wouldn't want to go backwards or they'll remember how he was on the eve of a sacking at the beginning of 2010
11. Neil Craig - can seemingly lose any amount of games in a row and it's alright as long as you have a send off game for some washed up player. But they've run out. Needs to play 2 finals.
12. Matthew Primus - can blame a lot onto Mark Williams this year but that'll dry up abotu round 10 if Port don't show signs of getting better
13. Damien Hardwick - depends on the start to the season. A few wins early will raise expectation fast and put him under enormour pressure. Better off losing a few early and playing the youth card to the media so he can skate through the season on easy street
14. Brad Scott - virtual free pass as long as North are competitive, that's all anyone every expects from them
15. James Hird - can blame everything on Knights. His reputation give him at least 1 year free to do anything
16. Mick Malthouse - got the flag, got a successor. Although expectations will be high unless something drastically goes wrong shouldn't be much problem although the media will keep churning out the same story about Buckley being in the wings
17. Guy McKenna - free pass in the first year

Worsfold, Craig and Ratten will be most under the gun IMO

Of those 3 I think Ratten a little unfairly given he has got the youngest team to the finals in the past 2 years. However if reports are true - he was almost gone this year - so I can't see that abating if they have a poor start.

One of Craig and Worsfold will be gone by rd 12 I reckon.

The smoky will be Dean Bailey - 2 wooden spoons and signs of improvement last year - if they regress he might be in trouble - though with a contract they probably can't afford to sack him.

Im sorry but i have to pull you up here. If you talk to most Lions fans we're actually pretty confident in Vossy.
In his first year he pulled us from the doldrums and we won our first final in 5 odd years.
2010 started strong but was brutalised by injuries the likes i havent seen in my team for some time. No wonder morale went down.

Had Dawes and Cloke been playing injured plus no Swan, Obrien, Beams or Maxwell do you think you guys would have won the flag?

And your vendetta against the Demons continues. Boring now. Ignore. Bye.

Ross Lyon isn't under pressure, if there is expectation to win a flag it only comes from them. They should still make the 8 but top 4 and certainly a Grand final are almost out of the question.

Bulldogs are in a slightly worse position to St.Kilda, older list, never made a GF even when their list was in it's prime, will go down possibly out of the 8 and then Eade will likely be gone.

...

Granted their have been some horrendous list management decisions but I'm not sure that they are entirely Voss's fault. And you're spot on with your assessment of the injuries you had through the year. Absolutely cruelled throughout the year. If you can have a decent run next year re injuries, I definitely see rapid improvement. And if Brown and the other senior players can have a good run, you're still up for finals.

I agree that Eade is under some pressure (see my earlier comments on this) but I'm interested to know why you think we'll slip so far ?

Injuries and injury management say as much about the coaching and training staff as it does about the players themselves.

Some coaches wont allow players to play injured so they get themselves right. Others will let an injured player keep playing and they carry it all season. Presti pulling himself out of a grand final says a lot about player attitude to injury as much as some else playing anyway.

Plenty of good sides out of the 8, your aging list, lack of depth just to name a few. Take Barry Hall's goals out of the equasion too and there wasn't really too many other major goalkickers.
