Oh well, I suppose it can't always be like 2009 eh Falchoon?!
Pies brought in Luke Ball and Darren Jolly whilst the Saints added Brett Peake and Andrew Lovett!!!

In fairness the Pies "middle aged" recruits were back-up players who were worth rolling the dice on. Russell, Lynch etc
Varcoe is different as he is a player still in good form and could be expected to be in the Pies best 22.

Precisely, I think you're going down the Lovett/Peake route with Varcoe, White, Russell, Lynch, White, Adams, Young et al

Varcoe says flag more likely for Pies than Cats in next few years

Herald Sun -
TRAVIS Varcoe wants to win a third premiership — and believes the greater security Collingwood has offered could give him a better chance than if he had remained at Geelong.

The creative utility revealed on Wednesday he feared the Cats might eventually turn to their younger brigade at his expense and the Magpies had “blown everyone out of the park” as he meticulously researched potential second homes

Great stuff
So he's going to live off the success at others at Collingwood is he?

It looks like a longer list if you repeat names doesn't it. Adams is a kid. Russell I never understood. No one cost us what Lovett cost and we are not starting with an old list and adding age.

You can argue about the quality of those names and you wouldn't get a lot of argument from me but the strategy is and list demographic (and therefore opportunity cost) is vastly different to the St Kilda situation.

IMO Collingwood are the hardest team to rate for next year. On one hand they beat 3 of the top 4 last year. They also had one of the worst injury runs in history and because of this they were fielding some of the youngest teams in the league. If they have a better injury run they improve on last year by quite a bit and there the development of their players might also aid in that.

On the other hand they have lost 2 players from the top 5 in the best and fairest + one may miss a few games through injury. Beams will be a big loss. They have also lossed the valuable experience of Maxwell and Ball and they also seem to be on a downward ladder trend.

I guess the million dollar question is will development of youth, the players they brought in and a better injury run counteract the players they have lost and if so will it improve or weaken them at a faster or slower rate than other mid rang teams from last season.

As I am a Collingwood fan I can’t give a balanced assessment of the team, but what I can say is they are a team that could raise up the ladder or fall. They many unknowns for people to suggest with any certainty how their year would go. They have both a lot of upside and downside.

Adams was Pick 12 in 2011 draft.
He was one of the Giants best performed midfielders.
The likes of Geelong, Hawthorn & Richmond made significant plays for him last year.

and he can't kick

I'll grant he has room for improvement, similar to Caddy at Geelong this year. The other 5?

and he can't kick

That is a bit overblown.
He had some fine games in 2014.
His last game against Port was a good indication of his ability.
You don't want to be too hasty judging young players who learn new systems at new clubs in their first years.

- Adams is only 21 and may be a prospect.
- Young played 17 games last year. Good run and carry player. Dropped off at the end of the season and then suffered a hamstring injury
- White - jury still out but I'm not a fan. Hopefully Ben Reid will be able to play a full season next year.
- Lynch was worth a punt at around 300k a season. Serviceable. Lots of clubs were interested when he became a free agent I recall.
- Russell was a top draft pick (#9 or 10? I think) who warranted another chance. Again not a fan but didn't cost much. Now have Langdon, Williams and a host of others coming on. Only played half a season. On the list for one year only.

Didn't quite go down the Beau Maister or Dean Polo path like the Saints. Thank goodness Maister retired, bit of a spud who understandably changed his name!

Nah that was the margin the last time you played them :)
..with our reserves team!
Even Pendlebury pulled out with an injury in the warm-up and was replaced by Armstrong who had already played against Geelong in the VFL in the afternoon.

It was your mob who could only score 58pts against us in your round 5 loss.:D

so what is an acceptable finish in 2015?
now Buckley has almost cleaned out every player that has one up on him.
some weird trades almost to the level of crazy vossy.

sure they would be great results but mean jack shit if your not playing in September.
Then I would suggest you answered your own question - everyone aims to play finals so that would be an "acceptable finish".
No need to get snippy or hairy chested because your team outperformed expectations this year.

Port one of the flag favourites along with Sydney so obviously being competitive with them are good results.
