Roughy, fair enough as he wasnt on the list

Grundy was our #1 ruck last year, and was injured. We had decent depth and used #2 amd #3 in combination all year.

if our #1 ruck goes down in 22, we dont have a #3 who can come in and cover.
Are you able to explain how that’s any different to 2022? Trading out Grundy doesn’t impact on our depth from this year to next because he was never available.

But that’s the point of depth! Last year we had three “ first rucks” on the list. This year (to date) we have two. So it’s 33 percent different

Admittedly we have significantly boosted our kpp second ruck type stocks but it’s unarguable that out first ruck depth has reduced. Not over yet of course as lists aren’t final.

It’s not lol. Depth is players you can use when the preferred player is unavailable. If you want to talk depth from that perspective we’ll actually have better “depth” entering 2023 than 2022 because we’ll have the same number on the list, an extra available to fitness and Begg should have improved with another pre-season.

Semantics.

Yes I agree we should have better depth this year.

Except maybe in first ruck. There’s nobody behind Mason Cox . Last year he was the depth backup.

No not semantics. Apex was correct to not include Grundy in a discussion on our depth in 2022 v 2023. It’s absolutely black and white. Out of interest can you name one club that has someone of any quality behind their second choice ruck?

The only one that comes to mind is GWS. Our competitors have Ryan, Fullerton, ? (Geelong), ? (Melbourne), ? (Fremantle) and Naismith. Seriously ruckman are the most overrated commodity in the game.

Wright has said that they're looking to add a ruck.

At the beginning of last year, we really only had Grundy with a couple of forwards with the size to play ruck, but whom we didn't know how they'd go. And a kid who was miles off.

This year, we go in with two rucks, a kid who should be getting closer and probably another one on the way.

We've lost in terms of quality, but have already added depth in the role.

Yep just one genuine first ruck should balance out the list… be that a development or vfl type I’m not sure.

Personally I think we might opt to utilise Kreuger or another kpp and play a mobile second ruck. Cameron or cox would then be the depth… like they were last year.

I think the plan will be to switch to one ruck and a KPP chopping out. 5 on the bench may change that though.

Plus I'm not in the Begg is no chance as a ruck club. I think he's an ok prospect, but even more significantly, I don't think he's much of a prospect for any other role, so I think he'll be playing ruck again this year.

Ruck quality may be an issue, but depth is unlikely to be.

YES, it's plain as the nose on my face that we will be playing Freddy as the second ruck with cameo's from McStay and even Frampton. Our game plan alone should be enough for people to realise that we would be at our fast moving best with that set up

Agree, except if they go 5 on the bench, there might be a re-think as thye may choose to carry a bloke on low minutes.

In 2022 we went into the season with Grundy and one of Cameron / Cox as preferred option in ruck. So when Grundy went down we were able to cover by using the Cameron and Cox combo...before we got to using KP options as makeshift rucks.

In 2023 we are going in with just the Cameron and Cox combo. If one goes down we are left with....??

It clearly impacts our depth as Cox was depth in 2022, and he will likely be a best 23 in 2023...our ruck depth is now using KP options like McStay, Kreuger, Frampton etc. as a chop outs if one of Cox or Cameron go down.

McStay or Krueger.

You mean the post where he included best 22 players Mitchell and McStay as examples of our improved depth?

Semantics.
Best 22 players that will push out others from the 22, who replace delisted players that couldn’t cut it at all, therefore improving our overall depth.

This shouldn’t be a difficult concept to grasp…

Our game plan has been on display for all to see for an entire season, I seriously doubt that Grundy will have any meaningful intelligence to add to what Melbourne’s coaching staff already know.

Also that he didn’t suit it.

He may pass on that Pendles has a basketball background though and once that becomes public, we’re stuffed.

Agree, the decision to jetison Grundy was about gameplan style and where our new footy dept values rucks.

They are happy to go that hybrid KP type option, over a genuine ruck.

And hence were more than happy to lose ruck depth to improve inside mid and KP depth...positions which they value more.

I'm concerned that he'll tell them the truth - that Pendles is actually a footballer and not a basketball player and thus you are actually allowed to tackle him, rather than just standing around awkwardly waiting for him to pass it off.

Losing Henry does bring this back a touch (we never had Grundy in 2022 so in a depth sense it’s not a loss). A fit Wilson and Dean will be decent depth additions as well.
Could also add Krueger to the list who played less than a handful of four quarter games
