I think it’s easier for Pies fans to deal with losing Grundy if they can turn him into a villain. I don’t subscribe to that. Good luck Brodes, every week except vs Collingwood.
It’s interesting that JDG got a better deal including dropped behavioral clauses because the Saints were lurking.
But no talk of him being a mercenary.
With Grundy, Adelaide’s interest and impact on the negotiations is conveniently ignored, so that it’s all about Grundy’s greed.

BS.... The previous admin could have said no but they didn't. They could have said no to Beams but they didn't. They could have said no to Phillips, Stephenson and Cox too but didn't. Stop taking the easy option because it suits your narrative. Treloar does the right thing to help the club out and they screwed him over. This is all on the club.

The previous admin were stealing a living but that doesn’t make feel sorry for Grundy.

Not a villain or dud sr just a limited tap ruckman who isn't an marking threat.

The contract was as much the clubs fault as his and his manager.
IIRC Grundy played the "return to Adelaide" card & Collingwood caved in.
If GW had been there at the time and was doing the negotiations, he would have said "there's 5 years, take it or leave it" & on more manageable coin.

Any way you look at it we mismanaged Grundy. Being too stingy to pay out for a fulltime ruck coach stinks and certainly led to him being a limited tap ruckman.

As for the contract negotiations I'd prefer not to get a holiday for expressing my disgust in more specific language :oops::mad:

Grundy may be a ‘limited’ tap ruckman but he is a standout as one of the best rucks we have had in eons strictly in tap numbers and tap to advantage numbers and he also got a crazy amount of possessions for a ruckman. Even in his worst games he was still way better than anything we have now or have had for a while. We can talk him down to minimise the pain but the guy is a very good footballer.

Be an idiot to boo someone who wanted to stay

I agree with Jen and your sentiment. It’s just business and the mess was ultimately our making, but I will boo Brody when he runs out on Kings birthday. It’s part of the Collingwood pantomime. If you’re not with us, you’re against us. I love it.

Collingwood typed up several other far more reasonable contracts which he flat out rejected before they caved in to his demands and offered him that one. If he really loved the club that much, he wouldn’t have held out for the ludicrous terms he wanted.

Who caved in? And if the club really loved its players we would have honoured Treloar’s contract. It’s all business and the club made a bad business decision caving in to his demands. Who knows how well the two first rounds draft picks we effectively passed up would be playing today…

Not a question of minimizing the pain.

A ruckman is defined by two attributes.

1. Tapping to advantage.
2. Being a marking force.

Brundy rarely does either.

I like the lad and thank him for his service but points 1 & 2 remain largely unfulfilled.

That's not an opinion it's documented statistics.

Consequences of his own actions? You're speaking as if he murdered someone.

Before he could sign that contract, Collingwood are the ones who typed it up and put it infront of him. Both parties played a part in what happened in the end. Both had some suffering as a result of it.

Move on.
Think it was a part bad luck, part bad club management, part bad list management and part inflexibility from Grundy + agent.

Ed was commenting even last year that “we did it so that we at least had / still have control re what he does after he’s locked in”. He obv felt the same way re Treloar and read the market as long term contracts being the way to go, with player salary levels increasing. Kinda misses the whole point that he wouldn’t be an all -aus until the age of 34, and that if you have long term shit contracts, you end up having to pay other teams to take them. So you actually lose control of what you can do with the list.

Then covid hit and salaries took a haircut, making inflated contracts a massive handbrake. Club could not have foreseen this.

Then the response and need for all players to take a cut was obv lost on his agent. I personally can’t see Brodie being a greedy person, but his agent obv dug his heels in and said “why be down an extra mil by the end of the contract when you don’t need to be? You’re a long time retired Brodie… this advice is why you employed me and makes me a good agent”. Ie very bad business if his agent is known in the industry as reducing his client’s earnings. The reverse is much better for PR, which they do care about, and use as marketing towards new players. So it’s also partially on Brodie listening to his agent, as he has every right. His legacy will not be with Collingwood as a result though, and he chose to maximise his earnings rather than accept his actual value, which I see as around 600k nowadays.

It is quite funny.
I'm a fan of his talent, but geez, saying he could be better than de goey haha. Until he fixes up defensive and contest stuff, he aint gonna play midfield. big call indeed.

He is going to be a gun. I hate it that he is at Geelong but he is going to we such a weapon :(

I was gutted when he wanted to leave, I understand but at the same time I want to smack him one ✋

They were strange players to compare him to. If you're looking for a star to compare his absolute, develops extraordinarily, highest possible level - it's James Hird.
James Hird was extraordinary to say the least. Absolute Star. Could also play anywhere. He was as good as it gets at AFL level.

Haven't seen anything too special from Ollie yet.

Agree Not even close. Just saying that Hirdy is much more the player type that Ollie would aspire to, rather than Dusty Martin.

Why it’s not far fetched. The kid is 20 years old and Goo is 26+. We will know in the next couple of the kid can play. And if he cements a spot at the Handbaggers. He is likely to succeed with all the opportunities he’ll have.

Just as I like all our kids. I don’t have any issues with other juniors at other clubs. I especially like those boys that I’ve seen come through or have had an eye on. Once they become bonafide stars my attitude changes. Especially if they are not ours. But until then I hope Henry absolutely shines.

just watched Show me the money on stan, it’s not bad, couple of things stood out. Geelong getting bowes, again, not good the comp. Ess and hawks list managers were gutted.

Of note Grundys manager when the deal got done said to Grundy that he’s spoken to petracca in Paris and he was looking forward to getting service from Grundy. He obviously hasn’t watched grundys tap work 😂
