They also lucked out a bit with Danger and Cameron, and their home ground is indeed advantageous.

But they didn’t win the grand final at GMHBA, so appears the list management strategy of staying in the window was a success.
If you can rely on:
1. having ridiculous longevity of stars who also supposedly played on miles unders
2. attracting two top 10 players in the league to nominate you in their FA year
The Cats model is the way to go.

I feel like with such an even competition clubs have to identify and maximise small competitive advantages.

I’m thinking collingwood’s crowds/wealth/fame could be leveraged better with free agency as our point of difference.

If you remain up perpetually then you also never cease to be a sought after destination.

There’s no template, as evidenced by the countless teams who do the traditional ‘bottom out’ only to stay there for a decade or more.

I think there merit to a Geelong’s approach personally.
Not me sadly. They have the one thing none of the eastern seaboard clubs can compete with, a relatively affordable housing market. They need reverse COLA because a $1m house in their market is $1.5m + in the Melbourne market and $2m in the Sydney market. If you’re a 20-30 yo with an 80% LVR mortgage that’s the leg up of the century.

They certainly have a few competitive advantages to attract players. Some disadvantages too in that living in Geelong would be a downside for many players, despite the upside of the housing market.

IMO doesn’t detract from the notion that if you manage your list profile in a way that keeps you at a certain experience/age level, if executed well you can theoretically always be in the window.

Moore is on 800k or less? The article said he signed a 6 year deal worth over 5 million.

If we can sign Naughton without losing anyone, and still have to contribute to Grundy/Stephenson's wages, that'd be one of the biggest coups in AFL history, along with Geelong getting Cameron.

Don’t think we’ve ever contributed to Stevo’s salary at North.

Granted Hill was out, but one thing that stood out massively was the lack of speed forward of centre last night. I really would like another good small forward. I say we have a crack at Liam Ryan.

Spot on. Need more turbo charged players.

Do people think that Adams will be traded as part of a package to a team that needs experienced players?

I think that could happen as GW is pretty ruthless.

We then go get Callaghan from GWS. That is automatically a decent upgrade.

A break away clean midfielder and a strong athletic halfback flanker (or 2) are the priority for us.

We also have two young 194-195 running mids in the 2nds (Reef & Allen) that we pray to God come on next year.

anyone watch Dylan stephens in the vfl? Is he worth a look at or just a failed top pick?

He’s not a JDG pick 5 talent but I like him
Saw him gather 28 touches against us in the VFL and thought they were all quality
He’s prob never going to be A grade (but maybe) but I def think he’s better than a few others we have on the list

If we could trade hard for another gun young mid (and even nab a slider in the draft) with Allan / Reef / Fin coming through, place them w Nick, you have a really young talent mid group

Thanks mate. Is he quicker than fin? I suspect being a top 5 he must have speed atleast. I should prob just go read his draft notes!

Interesting you brought up Fin…I nearly mentioned him bc, and this is just my opinion, Stephens is about the same but
  • appears to be a little stronger (this may change w another pre season)
  • a little better w the ball
  • a little more damaging
I think he’d compliment the young mid group I mentioned above

…however, I really want Fin to make it w us

Felt for Pendles last night. He shouldn't be expected to shoulder the stoppage responsibility at his age.

Without him our mids are small, Mitchell, Naicos, Adams & Sidey are small. Even degoey isn't huge.

That’s where Ed Allan or McInnes need to step up.

I feel for Pendles, Daicos and Moore shouldering all the work at the moment. Only so much they can do.

You can already see Cook at Carlton wheeling out the "he could have got much more elsewhere" with TDK.

Never seen a club do so many bad deals but never have salary cap issues.
