Crows name Reid replacement

http://www.afc.com.au/news/newsarticle/tabid/4417/newsid/76276/default.aspx

The Adelaide Football Club is pleased to announce that upon the retirement of John Reid at the end of the year, (current General Manager Commercial Operations) Phil Harper will be appointed to the role of General Manager Football Operations.

John Reid announced recently that after 14 years in the position, he would retire from this role at the end of 2009.

Prior to (and including) his current Commercial role, Phil Harper has compiled a very strong and broad background in football management. He has directly managed the player welfare and development function(s), been actively involved in player recruitment; and has been the General Manager of an SANFL Club (Woodville-West Torrens).

Phil also has the skills and (general) experience in management (eg financial, communications, strategic etc) that are needed to successfully undertake the very important position of General Manager Football Operations.

As this appointment comes into place in readiness for the 2010 season, it provides a very valuable period of handover throughout the remainder of this year.

Congratulations Phil :thumbsu: I must admit I don't know a huge amount about him but that list of experiences and skills looks very impressive!

I feel really bad for saying it but I'm glad it's not going to be Rendell. I hope we keep him on as a recruiting manager as long as possible.

Thanks Johnny Reid for a huge amount of service to the club. I hope that people don't use this announcement to again attack him for prejudices and perceived problems.

second this :thumbsu:

Personally I would have preferred to see an external appointment.

John Reid has been in the position for a long time and Phil has worked closely alongside him for a lot of that time. He could prove me wrong, but I find it hard to see him bringing many fresh ideas to the table. Seems the jobs for the boys mentality is as strong as ever down at West Lakes.

It's certainly a big win for Craigy. His grip on the AFC will soon be as tight as Choco's is at Alberton.

I'm really tired of comments like this.

Phil is more then capable to do this job, its a good thing we have this calibre of candidate already at our club.

Congratulations to Phil - i've always found him to be quite open and informative on his radio interviews.
... and to Johnny Reid... a job well done over the years in what is perhaps the most difficult of roles.
Certainly JR a major reason for the AFC having one of (if not the) most professional & respected management teams in the AFL.

Whilst Im certain that Phil, on paper, tick all the boxes, there is no doubt that jobs for the boys is alive and well at AFC. You would think they could go through some due diligence in searching externally, but as usual, provided you have come from the old Woodville Football Club or at least be an old SANFL player, or a family member of past administrators, you're always a chance.

AFC would, arguably, be the most insular club in the league and faces no scrutiny in respect of any appointments. This is no criticism of Harper, just of the complete lack of process which is continually evident at this "club".

And you two guys know exactly what about Phil Harper?? Have you ever met him, had discussions with him etc etc??

Your comments are unnecessary and made in ignorance and reflect poorly on the both of you, not Phil.

All the best on your appointment Phil, and I for one do not doubt that there will be a seamless transition from Reidy to you (although we will miss the dulcet tones of Reidy :D)

Do the AFC ever look externally when a job comes up. I'm going to try and weasal my way in there. Once your in it would seem you have a job for life.

I hear jericho's the front runner for Phils job.

What reflects poorly on you is an obvious inability to properly read a post. I made it quite clear that my post was in no way criticising Phil Harper, nor did it say anywhere that he was not the best person for the position. What I criticised was the apparent lack of process. Now if someone can confirm the AFC retained a suitably qualified recruitment consultant who scoured the country for possible candidates, that those candidates were considered/interviewed, and after all that Phil was selected, then I will stand corrected.

You have no idea whether or not that is true Peter J, and the club deserves more respect than your assumptions. The AFC is one of the most professionally run football clubs in the nation, and is respected by all other clubs and indeed clubs of other sports in Australia.
And so we dare not question anything it does?

You can't confirm that they didn't. You can't confirm anything about the process because you don't know anything about the process. For all we know, the process was carried out years ago and Harper has had one hand on the job for a while and has been mentored into the position. Perhaps they put feelers out everywhere, carried interviews in private, and decided on Phil in the end, no doubt partly owing to him already understanding the workings of the club. Or perhaps they just picked him because he's worked with them for a while and you're right and it is a boys club. The point is you don't know, so you shouldn't come out and try to criticise the club because you assume something is the case with no evidence.

And so we dare not question anything it does?

You can question what they've done, but there is a big difference between questioning a process and flat out accusing them of picking their mates for positions.

And why?????

Any organisation that can recruit people into their organisations with a succession plan in place deserves plaudits not brickbats

1. The decision was made quickly so the club knew who they wanted

2. Whether Phils replacement is from within again or an external appointment .....fact is at some stage we will be making an external appt for some position created by the knock on affect

Why comment at all when you don't know WHAT the process was?
