There’s just so many moving parts here with players, salary contribution etc but what would you consider a reasonable salary contribution for 13 + F1?

We cannot afford to be salary cap trapped because clubs like hawks will come for Reid. Merely $350k will allow barrass money to be $350k front loaded or another player.

We need to create as much dilemmas as possible for other clubs unless it’s a clear high draft pick that would hurt. None of this sliding of picks business.

I do agree in general about the need for a HBF linebreaker and definitely see where you're coming from, I wouldn't be overly against going that way.

I suppose how I see it is less about needs for another elite mid vs elite HBF and more about maximising value. Increasingly more and more of the top line mids are coming from top line spots in the draft (don't want to restart that old debate of 'you need top 10 picks for elite mids' as surprises can be found but I don't back WC relying on pulling those out from less certain prospects with our track record and the Beagles development or lack of).

HBFs however often come out of nowhere and from surprise previous roles (Sheppard, Wellingham, Jetta all initially mid-fwds etc). Houston was a rookie pick as a third tall fwd, Zorko transitioned back there this year to fill a hole, Tom Stewart was plucked as a mature ager, Nick Blakey who was picked early was more consistently a forward in his draft year. Others of course are drafted for that spot and excel at that spot like Hurn.

More just saying with those unknowns on our list as you say we may actually have some A-graders ready to break out, in my opinion it's more likely though that we're surprised by someone excelling at half-back randomly rather than mid randomly. Chesser/Ginbey might settle into it as their #1 position, Maric could be elite back there, who knows. I personally don't see anyone else besides Reid/Hewett stepping up to be a truly elite mid with who we've got on the list.

With that in mind and with the 2025 R1 possibly spent on Warner I'd be leaning toward as sure a thing as possible with a Draper/Smith type at 3. If everything goes perfect and we have Reid, Hewett, 2024 R1 and Warner all hitting their potential so be it I reckon, let them all rotate fwd and give everyone headaches. Or, if Hewett comes back at full fitness this year and dispels any worries and Draper or whoever is looking like a gun we could manufacture what you're saying in 2025 with that R1 pick.

Would still be keen on drafting a specialist, high potential HBF for sure, just reckon it can be done later or come surprisingly from attempts to fill other positions. That being said wouldn't be against trading 3 if we were offered absolute overs (again just keen to maximise value) but with the evenness of the first round I doubt other clubs will offer overs, in which case would be in the JTP3 camp.
I guess I dont value the midfield as much as a lot of other people. I think its more than fine to have 2-3 A graders and a bunch of role players/dedensive mids while trying to contend. There will be free agents and other good players that will present as we mopve up the ladder. Maybe im counting Reid as worth more than 1 normal A-grade mid

I do think that the half back line is just more important to fix, and get it right. If we end up with a couple of extra outside players because we target them so much then thats fine. The way the game seems to be played lately is far more transition/outside based than relying on the inside mids.

Good teams need an elite backline.
If we lined up with Travaglia, Tauru, Hough, Ginbey, Gov, HEdwards, and Duggan in 2026 that would be an elite backline. Gov replacement could be Maric or Bazzo or whoever

We will get another potential A-grade mid next year anyway

I lost the quotes but saw posters debating why North would trade their F1 (likely top 6 pick) for pick 13 once we get it from Hawks.

This idea has stemmed from an article that was trying to facilitate Houston to North. Port apparently want a R1 this year but North’s pick 2 is way overs. So either they try and split which seems difficult this year or they trade their F1 back into R1 this year.

Then the link was made that IF Freo miss out on Bolton and Baker, they could trade either pick 9 or 10 for North’s F1 and bank a top 6 pick to use on Warner next year.

Posters (myself included) then wondered if we could use pick 13 (+ something) to nab North’s F1 instead of Freo. Alternatively we could split 3 + 23 for 6 + 9 once Richmond have landed those picks and then trade 9 for North’s F1.

Yes North’s pick next year will likely be better than 9 or certainly 13, but this years draft is highly rated and North will back themselves to improve, especially if they finally land some decent trade targets.

Teams are also in a hurry to rebuild so there is a tax applied to pushing a pick into next year as it means another year of waiting to get a top draftee in to the club and see some improvement. If anything teams want to trade future picks into this draft to ‘fast track’ development.

It seems Travaglia is the latest prospect posters are swooning over (move over Sid). I can understand the keenness for an attacking half back but I agree with some other replies that we desperately need to address the midfield first.

Having said that maybe the best of both worlds is splitting pick 3. Again, it sounds like it may be tough to find someone willing, but if we could turn 3 + 23 (or maybe 19/20 if we get a PP) into 6 + 9 or 7 + 8 then we could hopefully land the best remaining mid followed by TT.

All depending on how realistic the Warner chase is this year or next.

Also happy to grab a couple of guys like Dev/Garcia etc and hope at least one turns into a reliable midfield workhorse who can do some heavy lifting and take the heat off our young guns.

Really happy waterman signed on but really hasn't the club learnt long term contracts they just don't work. We will be online sooty and moaning about Jakes contract in 2 years. But at least if another club wants him they will have to pay dearly.

It’s front loaded and we have have to fill our cap. Both parties will be fine. Plus we not only need to draft quality seniors in their mid to late 20’s we also need to retain the couple we have.

Essendon aren’t trading down, at 8 they should be safe from a Kako bid, at 13, they likely won’t be.

The real Joker in the pack is Jack Hutchinson.

awkward kath and kim GIF

they wont have to, they can use their pick 8 on whoever then take kako with shit picks after. Kako isnt going top 10
Yeah I guess so, but they do only have one other pick in 28 left unless they go on a trading frenzy to generate other picks
