Done deals:

  • Zane Trew, Jamaine Jones and Jordyn Baker delisted

Ongoing discussions:

  • List Manager Matt Clarke appeared on Sept 11 Gettable - Click spoiler below for summary
On the draft: "We predicted that the draft was strong, but it's probably gotten stronger during the year."

On top end of draft: "You could probably make five or six different choices and get it right."

On Pick 3: "I reckon there's five (players) around that mark."

On splitting: "I think you want to hold an early selection if you can. The depth of this group allows you to maybe have some movement there, and see what you can do to bring in more talent in the first 20-25 picks. Easier said than done, and I think most clubs would be saying the same thing. We'll see what we can do."

On Liam Baker: "He's still yet to make a decision. They're still weighing up a few things. We'd love to get Liam on board from what he offers from a talent and leadership point of view. We understand where we're at as a group, we're rebuilding our group, we need to add some guys in the middle tier to support our young group."

On Jack Graham: "We've got a number of players that we're speaking to. A bit of a wait and see on that one as well. We'll talk to a number of guys."

On Shai Bolton: "I think it will be difficult for anybody, really. He's heavily contracted and a high quality player."

On James Peatling: "He's heavily involved in a finals series at the moment so I don't want to comment too much on it, but I think there's a number of guys that have been playing really good footy this year that could suit what we do and what other clubs do. He's taken his footy to another level this year."

On Tom Barrass: "We've had an early discussion with Hawthorn about it, they understand where we're at. He's nominated Hawthorn as his ideal destination. We want what we think he's worth, as a genuine key back in the competition that can do what he can do. We're obviously mindful of getting an appropriate deal for West Coast."

On Tom Clurey: "Maybe (note: sounded very non enthused). We'd probably need some key back depth, whether that's through the draft or trade and free agency."

On Jack Darling: "We've had initial discussions with his management group about (moving). We're open to talking, as we are with all of our players, but Jack's contracted with us."

On Liam Ryan: "I expect him to be at West Coast next year, yes." (The most definitive answer of the day by a mile, a non-starter of a talking point.)

On out of contact players e.g. Rotham, Witherden, Jones: "We're still working through what it looks like from a list point of view, and how many selections we'll want to have, and players that may come in and potentially may go out. You might want to give a coach an opportunity to look at these guys."

On Harley Reid: "We've had discussions most of the year with his management group. I think it sits in a really good place. We're open to doing really whatever they want to do to be honest. We're really confident in building the right system around Harley, on and off field, to make sure that he's really comfortable, that he's going to play his best footy, and his long term future."

On Jake Waterman's new deal: "Yep, really close. We're working really closely with his management on that. I expect that we'll have something done pretty soon."

On Oscar Allen: "We've been talking with Oscar and his manager most of the year on that one. We're going through some stuff at the moment. I think we'll be ok with that one."

Then why was the St Kilda guy still complaining about this lol.
What did they make the rule change?

The change to NGA matching was announced back in July:
‘Excitement machine’: AFL’s biggest winners of NGA change... and unlucky losers of years past

The complaints from St Kilda had a different, and far more shameless motive however.

St Kilda president A.Bassett aired his public complaints about drafting during their awards night on 30th September:
‘Sick and tired’: Saints boss slams AFL draft system over premiers’ access to prodigy as departing star snubbed

St Kilda then receive pick 8 compensation for J.Battle on 4th October:
Updated Hawks win the Battle: Compo pick confirmed as Saint completes move

But it's not compromised... Just complicated of course.

I dunno if it's been said anywhere that Freo would take Baker for 11 independently of the Bolton deal?

It's a different pot calling the kettle of fish black if it helps get Bolton over to their club. I'm sure Dockers fans would be melting at the prospect of adding Baker for that pick alone without Bolton being part of the discussion too. Happy to be corrected here though.

If Freo have offered pick 10,11 and 18 for Bolton and Baker then the only reason Richmond haven't accepted it is because we are working something out to get Baker.

So why do you ignore that we can get flankers with picks outside the first round? And all the major phantom drafts, why do none of them have flankers in the top10? You're being different for the sake of being different. Sort of what fearthers do. It's why I asked the question.
What pick did Lockie Whitfield go?

Luke Hodge?

I see Travagalia as that exact type of player.

And he will only cost a pick around 7 to 10.

My perfect draft is we get Travalgalia AND a Lindsay or if we do land another top 10 pick a sliding mid like Langford or Smillie. Lindsay at 10/11 would be just as good.

This draft is very hard to judge. The best mid may well just get taken after pick 10.

You call this being different for the sake of it. Well just focusing on using our lowest pick on a mid is simplistic without understanding the depth of this draft. And disregarding what the modern game has become or what our list needs are.
I actually agree with Obeanie1 I think Travagalia may well end up being one of the top 3 in the draft.

AFL legend Paul Roos says Hawthorn is playing a dangerous game with its negotiations on a trade for West Coast's Tom Barrass.

The two teams' discussions had been centered around Hawthorn's first-rounder (currently pick 14), before the Hawks stunned the league by trading that pick to Carlton on Friday.

Reports around the trade suggested Hawthorn had grown tired of negotiations with the Eagles.

"This is a slap in the face from Hawthorn. They're going, 'F you, we're going to get him anyway'," Roos told the ABC AFL Daily podcast.

[PLAYERCARD]Tom Barrass[/PLAYERCARD]'s potential move to Hawthorn appears to be in jeopardy at this stage.

"If Hawthorn misses out on Barrass it's a bonehead decision, an absolute bonehead decision.

"It stains them with the managers. This is what people don't understand. If Hawthorn don't do the deal for Barrass, let me tell you, the next time a Hawthorn person rings up (to discuss) a player who's contracted, let me tell you what the discussion is going to be: 'Not interested'.

"Some clubs are really easy to deal with, and the managers know that. The managers dictate when players will go and where they go.

"This is a stain on the Hawthorn Football Club if the Barrass deal doesn't get done by Wednesday."

Paul Roos goes whack on Hawthorn's approach. Tapping up a contracted player all year and then decides to trade away the draft pick that would certainly be involved in getting him over.

Is the Tassie team likely to have this arrangement, at least temporarily?
They can't claim to not be a traditionally AFL state.

Not yet, but it will be coming.

Tasmania currently falls under North Melbourne's NGA - hence why there are moves to swap them out for access to Darwin now that Gold Coast have been scaled back from having access there.

Once the alignment occurs between the Devils and the VFL, prior to the initiation of the team in AFL, the Tasmanian NGA zone will be set for them.

When are they gonna stop teams from trading away picks so they can bundle a bunch of low picks?
How long has that even been in place?

Great to read.

Some sense coming out of the Vic media finally. It's just a shame so many nuffie journos just chase clicks with silly headlines.

No surprise. Roos knows how the system works.

Over to you Hawks. ;) :thumbsu:

Freo might have tabled those picks but we haven't heard what they have requested to come back the other way with those players. My guess is it's not as juicy an offer as it sounds given we're only hearing half of it.

Great point. Frankly, if they want to pay 3 R1 for those two, then Richmond is best off accepting them. Realistically, I can't see Feathers ever wanting to overpay for anything.

If the deal was as straightforward as that I reckon Tigers would be on media street saying we have an in principle agreement with Fremantle subject to West Coast matching or exceeding the offer to split Baker out of the deal. It's too good to be true and not the way Freo have operated in the recent past.

Has got the hallmarks of us offering our F1 for Curtin last year despite noone reporting that we had asked for a F2 back.

I might be in the minority, but I would love Parish at the Eagles. Parish and a Future 1st for Pick 3 would definitely help. Parish is definitely the sort of player that would be a perfect fit next to Harley.
I agree that Parish would be perfect for our midfield but he's like Baker in that I wouldn't want to spend any serious capital on him. 3 for 9 + Parish would be much more palatable than 3 for 6/8 + Baker though.

Sure seems like the real story is that you can't trade players against their will and obviously Baker is much more keen to come to us than Freo. I'm sure Richmond are the main ones pushing the Freo option.

On a related note, Gettable just reported we're focused on getting the Baker deal done first with some other way of getting it done. No specific talk of pick 3 in that.
