I don't care if it's 2 years even though I'm not keen on giving 30+ year old players more than 1 year contracts, particularly if you would welcome them knocking on the coaches and saying they wanted to take up another club's offer.

I just hope we're not paying too much even though I assume we have plenty of space.

I wonder if you can go up to someone like Ginbey and say, "listen mate, you're a second yearer next year. Your base is $105k. But we have some cap space now and we're not confident we'll have it in a few year's time. We'll park and extra $100k on your next contract but in return we want to discount $75k off your next contract".
Gibney is not a good example but

You have the situation of hill to St Kilda. And I'll make up some rough numbers:

Freo year 1 $600k
Freo year 2 $600k
Freo year 3 $400k
Freo Year 4 $300k

And the end of year 3 hill was accustomed to his salary and bailed.

That's the danger of front loading a contract.

So on what grounds would the AFL give us a priority pick?

4 possible reasons from my perspective
1. Uncompetitive having only 2 wins in the last 2 seasons and we line up a la Norf did last year when they got an additional R2 and R3 pick. To keep some sort of integrity in the competition, this is a possibility. :heavycheck:
2. Crowds stay away so the AFL lose their share of the gate takings. The Eagles have a wait list so members are still likely to turn up and the AFL. The annual seat fee for 2023 was direct debited in November 2022 so it would not carry weight. :heavymultiply:
3. WA TV audiences start to dwindle. Not really important as I suspect many Eagles fans still like watching football so if you only had 1 game to prioritise, it was the Crows v Pies game on Sunday and so no significant impact to the viewership. :heavymultiply:
4. We have lost 2 top line players to early retirement due to concussion. Venables and Sheppard. This has the most credibility as the AFL are already woried about it and the recent senate inquiry will have them concerned.:heavycheck::heavycheck::heavycheck::heavycheck:

So we go to the AFL with cap in hand and ask for the same as what Norf got last year and Carlton go a couple of years before that. Explain that this has come about due to the suffering in the hub, impact of long haul on injuries and 2 top line players with concussion.

We go to the AFL with Freo to present a case of the injury impact on our clubs due to long hail flights. We present 2 alternate options of increasing our salary cap to pay players for a shorter career or a case of Victorian sides only getting 9 home matches due to not having to travel interstate clubs and each interstate team gets 13 - 14 home games a year. This would be about equalisation of the travel impact on squads.

We could also go to the AFL with a request for more NGA players to Cat B to cope with the WAFL limitations and more importantly, request that WA clubs can match bids on their NGA talent after the first round (and this will help Freo more so as they have better zones).

I expect the AFL to baulk on differing salary caps, refuse the less home games to Victorian teams and hence we get a PP because that does not come out of the AFL's pocket and it will just compromise the draft like it has done in recent years and we will be getting accustomed to it prior to the Tassie team.

Cornes: “That’s ok, I’d probably let him go and try to get a first round pick for him.”

First rounder for someone who can't get a game a regular game and has just done an ACL.
OK Kano.
FMD.
Lol -more likely he refuses to sign any contract and then walks straight to us in the preseason draft.

Spec on who’s going to retire?
It won't be Cripps.
It is unlikely to be NN.
Shuey a chance but he seems determined to keep on trying and giving it one last shot.
I'd normally have picked it as Hurn as he is the most selfless and most likely to do the team first thing. But he's also the only one not long term injured.

50% Hurn, 40% Shuey, 10% NN.

Edit - As Mig says, LTI is a more likely option.
40% NN, 40% Cripps, 20% someone like Gov or Cole.

“They don’t (have a spot) at the moment,” McArdle said.

“But you'd say with a lot of their long term injuries, do they put Nic Natanui on the long term injury list? Who knows whether he's going to be back.

“The messaging is already that he's going to play the second half of the season at best.

“Do they they put him on ice? Then there's probably a few other ones that they could look at, Tom Cole potentially, even someone like a Jamie Cripps will be lucky to play again this year.

“It feels like they could easily open up, one or two spots at least looking at their injury list.“

"The option to add new players to the list in the mid-season draft this month is not possible for the Eagles given they don't have any vacant list spots."

So if we look to place someone on the LTI list, it needs to be thought through. I believe if they are on the list, they are not playing WAFL either. Therefore I would not want to put any of the following on the list as we need to prioritise their development - Burgiel, Chesser, Hewett, Long and J Williams.

It really stands out as being Cripps, Ryan and Winder.

Why Cripps? He would get a max of 4 games if he remains on track. Really!! Put on ice until 2024. He supposedly has his extension and what is the point with long haul for the Drug Rates and Dogs.

Why Winder? He is my second choice as I think his bags are packed. I have no idea what TBC is for him but his knee has been a problem since drafted. Is it fair? I don't care. He was lucky to get picked up and re-rookied and wasted the chance. I would prefer to prioritise games to Long and Hewett. I cannot see Winder on our list come September so just make it happen.

Why Ryan? He would get a possible 6 weeks and he has been banged up for a couple of years. He would be my 3rd on the list as it would be good for Oscar and Long to be playing alongside of him in the last month and a half.

Verdict: - we take 2 picks in the mid season draft and hopefully one is a keeper and although unlikely to be A grade, it adds to our depth, gives us 2 more players for WAFL (either they play WAFL or relegate someone else) and we can hope to get at worst 1 of them as a player in the 20 - 30 depth chart and address positions of need.

Besides, pictorially it is a simple decision

So anyone here seen much of Buller? I'm assuming he's a pretty mobile big guy, high possessions and marks indicating he plays up the ground a fair bit? He'd be getting more than 2 goals a game if he was just plonked in the F50

Plays FF - good / great contested mark though kicking not his strength.
Quad / Hamstring injury out for 2-3 weeks .

I've seen Jack Buller play live twice this year plus a fair few times last year. A really good WAFL player but lacks athleticism and his accuracy is not great. His physicality is AFL ready but that would be what is required versus he has an advantage at WAFL.

He would be an inspired BEAGLE pick but that is not the point of it. He would immediately improve our WAFL team and be brilliant for Jack Williams to partner up- with. That said, I would see him delisted come year end.

I hope I am wrong

Cole or Naitanui?

Cole or Naitanui?
I did not listen to the podcast. Was there a retirement imminent? I will answer assuming this.

I have no idea which it would be. Cole is a solid C grader that might well have done some long term damage to his ankle that comes with a high risk of long term life problems. His loss will be minimal when looking at 2 years time as Hough, Chesser and Burgiel will all be capable of covering him. Having met him outside of football, he is a really nice guy with great values. He is likely to prioritise life over another couple of years of football.

NicNat is a complex one. He is such a idol for the club but his body is surely cooked. At his current weight, he is not competitive. He has not been able to keep the weight off (can't run but he has been IMO too heavy since the 2015 injury). The club will want his departure done really well as he is the face of the Academy and he could easily be remunerated outside the cap with a LT job at the club.

I would guess Cole but without any insider knowledge.

No idea about retirements, they just strike me as two players that might be unlikely to get back before the final rounds of the season, in which case we may as well rule them out in the next couple of weeks.

Ruckmen will need to be 200++ in the future. The bounce is dead pretty soon.

I've seen this mentioned throughout the thread.
What will the bounce be replaced by? And why will it bring about the need for taller rucks? Genuine question.
