West Coast forward [PLAYERCARD]Jake Waterman[/PLAYERCARD] is understood to be unhappy with a two-year deal on the table from West Coast.

Rebuilding West Coast have a fight on their hands to keep Jake Waterman, with the son of a club great underwhelmed by a two-year deal on the table for him.

The Eagles triggered a significant list-clean-out on Thursday, announcing five de-listings - headlined by Samo Petrevski-Seton - in the wake of their dismal three-win wooden spoon season.

Waterman has been earmarked to remain after an encouraging first half of the year. But the 25-year-old is yet to agree to terms with the Eagles despite months of negotiations.

He is believed to be unsatisfied with several terms of a two-year that has been offered, including the salary.

Waterman played 11 games this season, including two career-high four-goal hauls, and was one of the bright spots for the Eagles in the opening months of their campaign with his improved form.

However, his year was cut short when he was sent home before the round 13 belting at the hands of Adelaide with illness, only to be hospitalised for more than a week with inflammatory bowel disease ulcerative colitis.

He has been medically cleared to continue and is understood to be seeking a three-year deal that will take him into free agency at the end of 2026.

The club’s handling of Waterman’s time in hospital drew criticism from his father Chris, who was a two-time premiership player across a 177-game career with the Eagles in the late 1980s and 1990s.

“(The club) probably could have reached out to check on him a bit earlier, I would have thought,” Waterman said at the time.
“After sending him home from Adelaide on a plane, pretty crook to find out, he’s in the hospital Monday night — the first time they contacted him ... would have thought they’d contact him (sooner) and just check on him, but they now know it’s pretty serious.”

Waterman told The West Australian a few days later his remarks had been a “little drive-by” for the Eagles before both parties moved on.

“I have spoken to people at the club and it wasn’t meant to escalate that quick, but it did,” Waterman Snr told The West Australian.

“Us and them now realise it (the illness) was more serious than we first thought, we’ve connected and now our focus is Jake and we move on.”

It is understood other clubs have looked at Waterman should he choose to leave the Eagles. The versatile Claremont product has kicked 79 goals in 84 games after being drafted with pick No.77 in 2016 as a father-son.

It comes as The West Australian can reveal defender Alex Witherden is set to sign a one-year contract, joining forward Jai Culley in playing on in 2024.

Witherden, 25, finished eighth in the John Worsfold Medal count earlier this month in his best season for the Eagles since crossing from Brisbane at the end of 2020.

Zane Trew’s future is still undecided, with the midfielder a good chance to earn another rookie contract despite managing only four games this season – three as the tactical sub.

He had a strong WAFL season, averaging 25 disposals and kicking five goals in 11 games for the winless Eagles.

Former Carlton first-round draftee Petrevski-Seton joined Xavier O’Neill, Greg Clark, Connor West and Isiah Winder in not being offered a contract for 2024.

Defender Luke Foley was axed earlier this week, with the exit of retirees Nic Naitanui, Luke Shuey and Shannon Hurn meaning the Eagles have made nine list changes so far.

Petrevski-Seton was the most prominent victim of Thursday’s cull. He lasted just 27 games in two seasons at the Eagles after being traded from the Blues as part of a three-way deal with the Western Bulldogs that cost them pick 52 in 2021.

The forward played 13 games this year and was a regular first-choice player as a pressure forward for the injury-ravaged club, having made 94 appearances for Carlton after being taken with pick No.6 in the 2016 draft.

O’Neill, 23, has been cut after 39 games in five seasons, having managed 13 games in 2023 in a year when he was sensationally dropped five times.

The Victorian midfielder was taken with pick 28 in 2018 and was the highest draftee for the club in a three-year period ending in 2020.

It had been previously reported that Winder would be delisted after being re-rookied last year, ending his career at just seven games in three seasons – including none this season.

Mature age recruits Clark and West have also been delisted as part of the overhaul.

West, 24, played 28 games since being taken in the 2021 mid-season draft from West Perth.

The son of former player Robbie, West’s season ended when he sustained a high-grade medial ligament injury in the 63-point loss to Collingwood in round 12 after playing nine consecutive games from round four.

Clark, 26, was drafted as a mature-age inside midfielder from Subiaco but played the majority of his 21 AFL games on the wing – all of which were losses.

He had 24 disposals on his debut in round seven last season, but never managed more than 20 for the rest of his short career.
“On behalf of the club I would like to thank each of the players for their contributions during their varying times at the club,” Eagles football boss Gavin Bell said on the five delistings.
“They have each left an impression on the club and we wish them every success in their future endeavours.”
West Coast are set to be busy this off-season, with wantaway Hawthorn forward set to nominate the Eagles as his preferred destination after requesting a trade for personal reasons.
The Eagles have also been strongly linked to Brisbane midfielder Deven Robertson who is the nephew of former Eagles captain Darren Glass and is out of contract at the end of this year.
Greater Western Sydney ruckman Matt Flynn is also a reported target after out-of-favour Western Bulldogs big man Jordon Sweet nominated Port Adelaide as where he wants to play in 2024.
The Eagles already have a strong draft hand with the prized No.1 pick – set to be used on Victorian teenage star Harley Reid – as well as picks 19, 35, 38, 54, 57 and 75.

6 years without a midfielder on our list

With Trew and L Edwards not really in our best 30, you could almost call it 7 years

This would fall on Rawlings, right?

If so, given that he's no longer at the club hopefully it doesn't.

Depth player not offered the keys to the city. Jake is being misled I suspect.

I think Robertson would slot in on that 23 line (one above Edwards and Trew), at least?

It’s a start I guess.

Does this mean we would have Reid secured for 3 years right out the gate? Great news if true.

They’ll try to rush it through for this year with the Vics hoping Harley will tell the club I’m not coming now it’s 3 years.
Then with Pick one the West Coast Eagles select Harley Reid.

Surprised that SPS was cut.
Thought he was pretty serviceable early in the season before he got injured.
Especially since he was delisted before Trew.
Moved to WC thinking he was gonna get more midfield time, ended up getting none and cut after only 2 years.
If he had stayed at Carlton, could still have remained on a list and playing finals.

Two years seems generous to be honest, given his health concerns.
Shit yeah. I'm one of his bigger fans around here, but I'd jump at a two-year contract if I were him. Also, if he goes on to be a gun, that third year would be a lot more lucrative when it's time to re-sign. Weird call imho.

Lol so the rumours were true.
Maybe trying to leverage the situation given that Chris initially seemingly blamed the club for Jake's predicament.
2 years is more than generous. Would be irresponsible to give him more than that.
If he doesn't accept, then good luck getting a better offer elsewhere.
I'm no Jake hater, but honestly no big loss.

Pretty easy decisions with those delistings.

SPS and Trew (if he does in fact survive the cull) a toss of the coin. I’d rather back the 22 year old inside mid with elite hands and limited exposure at AFL level compared to the 26 year old high half forward/pinch hitting mid at his second club that has never hit the heights over a career spanning more than 100 games.

I know it’s not cool to relish in blokes losing their livelihoods (mind you they probably made between $100 to $200k a year for their time on the list which isn’t bad for kids in their early 20’s) but I’m glad XON is no longer clogging the list.
