This isn't my clubs board so hopefully you don't think I'm overstepping my bounds.

This kind of scenario is why I hate this existing free agency system. It incentivises clubs to push out their own players, good servants of the club with a long tenure and strong internal relationships built over years. All because the system hands you compensation that's significantly more than the player would be worth on the open market. It puts supporters in the shitty position of having to decide between a player they've loved watching vs pick 2 in the draft.
This all happened because of Gold Coast entering the comp and Geelong losing Garry Ablett jr . Then Franklin leaving Hawks. It was never meant to be fair , just to placate Geelong and Hawthorn , super clubs at the time .

AFL Trade Radio’s list of 45 players up for trade

Guessing this is just rehashing old rumours or saying the Eagles should trade him and cash in on his value

The biggest thing about FA that I don't like is that the receiving club pays nothing for the privelege.

So you get players going from the weak clubs (onfield) to the strong.

That and the 20% discount for F/S and NGA players get my goat.

100% stolen from big footy

Would be roapable if the Crows purchased pick 4 by trading in Chol's salary and sending back 2nd rounders for points.

Come on Eagles get in there if true.
Surely Chol has positive value?

Said it before Melbourne could do a lot worse than bring him in as a forward target / ruck support.

Didn’t the Lions do it with Daniher? Cats with Bowes ect

Salary dumps where the involved player agrees to move because their salary is still covered, just with a different team, are a fair way off what was proposed with terminating a player's contract without consent.

No. Daniher was a genuine free agent when he moved. Bowes wasn’t, so there was no compensation pick created.

The AFL publishes a list of free agents, ie players coming out of contract who qualify for free agency, periodically every year. Mutually agreeing to tear up a player’s contract to make them a free agent when they’re not, just to artificially create a compensation pick rather than get the acquiring club to trade an existing pick, hasn’t ever been done and I highly doubt the AFL would allow it to happen. Even if it was two of their pet clubs involved.

Just an idea for people to remember.

Clubs outside of those needing points dont look to improve their draft hand to just get the best picks possible.

Each club has a list of targets in a band within each area of the draft specific to the clubs needs and requirements.

Significantly higher talent will trump a list need at said pick but if the talent is similar the list need will take prevalence.

This is why clubs now trade forward and back through the draft. One key area where the WCE are seen as by other clubs is fair in negotiation and fair in trades.

It places the club in a good position to secure the talents they are targeting. I dont specifically know who West Coast are targeting in the draft however as a supporter rather than someone working for another club I have a long and specific list of who I dont want the club to draft.

There is zero point in improving your draft position unless you are targeting specific players. If a player will be there at pick 19 the club wants there is no need to trade up. The same with pick 33 imo.

Remember last year, the club was happy with the pick they had to select Noah Long. Now if that pick was 40 rather than 58 would the club have Long? Maybe, maybe not. However as supporters everyone is happy having Long on the list now and well into the future.

Most clubs operate in this manner with only the academy clubs/fs and clubs with cap issues operating differently. The manner in how each club reaches their draft list and who is on it will be mildly to wildly varied however the end aim is almost always identical.

I guess it is when clubs are aware of another club with their eyes on the same player (Kelly as an exsmple) when they try & jump ahead of a rival.

Looks good, Lual had some great moments in the champs when I saw him. ZZ I reckon won’t go in first 2 rounds to other clubs which if it’s the case I’d like to go something like this keeping in mind it’s hard to know who will be available at 19 this far out:

1-Reid
19-Hardeman/DeMattia/ Tholstrup/Schoenmaker
33- Freijah
38-Moir/Zakostelsky

Brockman/Dev: pick 52 to the first to accept gets it, other goes PSD/57
FA: Flynn

Looking a little further forward I think some good and perhaps homesick talent might be:

2024 Aaron Naughton, Busslinger, Liam Baker, Logan McDonald, English
2025 Sam Taylor, Chad Warner, Sheldrick, JVR, McVee

Could have a pretty good side ready for a crack at finals in 2026

On the trades if it was Port or Geelong sure 57 or PSD.

Lions and Robertson. May not happen. Got a feeling he plays in a GF and stays no matter the result. Booo.

Of the future trade in list Busslinger may happen simply as the Dogs have so many young talls and will be getting another this draft.

English looks like staying East.

Taylor is the next GWS captain.

Sheldrick I can see as gettable.

Warner would cost too much. Free agency 2027?

Both had deals ripped up to suit

Colby was back in action for the first time in over a month after a broken bone in his foot threatened to prematurely end his season. It was clear that he wasn't at 100% capacity, getting caught out at times and not able to get to as many contests as he typically would. Its a measure of the elite standards he's set this season that this would have been a very good performance for just about any other midfielder in the Talent League.

Everyone seen the loophole and what they were doing with Daniher and Bowes. The loophole didn’t get shut down until after the deals were done.

You’d have to look at the writing of the rules to see if there is a loophole or not. Not going to happen in this case though

I would say both ‘Sydney and Barrass’ in this case would sign off on it.

Not going to happen but I could be a possible loophole depending on the wording of the rule

What?

Daniher was coming out of contract as a restricted free agent throughout 2020. There wasn’t any contract that was ripped up.
Haha. What?

He signed a bigger deal to get Essendon the comp they wanted. That deal was ‘ripped up’ ‘restructured’ after one year to one that wouldn’t of triggered the compo

What about Hunter Clark as a target for an inside midfielder?

How much would he cost? PSD possibility?

I don't think it was ripped up, just more years added at less money.

AFAIK restricted free agent contracts can't be altered on an earnings per year level.

Definitely gamed the system but that initial short contract at high dollars would have been honoured. They would have had to pay that dollar amount in each of those years. It can't be 'smoothed' or averaged out after the fact.

I don’t believe it was honoured from some reports but who knows.

Can’t see Daniher player for $300k in his last 2 years of a 3 then 5 year deal.

Watching this AFL finals series hits home the importance of being able to make the most of opportunities. On more than one occasion the better team has lost because they cant kick straight. Would take a chance on this kidd over selling the farm for Naughton for that reason alone.
West coast to pick up Morris is my tip, they have a couple of picks in the 30’s is where I reckon he’ll land.
