AFL Mid-Season Draft 2023: West Coast Eagles meet with Ryan Maric as he looks to earn spot on a list

Mitchell Woodcock

The West Australian

Ryan Maric bases his game around Geelong superstar Jeremy Cameron and Melbourne dead-eye Bayley Fritsch – and he could be in a West Coast guernsey as soon as this weekend.

The Gippsland Power forward met with Eagles recruiters for the second time on Monday as they mull over who to take with pick No.1 in the mid-season draft on Wednesday.

Maric, 18, is the favourite to have his name read out first after a blistering start to the season for the Power and two impressive VFL games for Box Hill Hawks, where he has kicked four goals.

Coming to a club under so much pressure like the one-win Eagles might be daunting for some, but Maric said he would thrive on the opportunity just to get on an AFL list.

Ryan Maric kicked two majors for the Box Hill Hawks.

EAGLES’ PROSPECT?

West Coast’s injury crisis has exposed their depth players to the big time and too many have proved they aren’t up to the task.

“I feel like I’ve always been a pretty adventurous person and I’m always up for a challenge so I reckon I’d thrive over there,” Maric told The West Australian.

“I’m happy to go anywhere, just to get on a list is my dream so if that means moving interstate I reckon that’d be awesome.

AFL Match Centre

“It’d be unreal (to be at West Coast). They have 100,000 members. All teams go through these patches and they can turn around pretty quickly, we’ve seen it with the likes of the Collingwoods, the Melbournes.”

Despite being the favourite to be the first picked, Maric said the Eagles were playing their cards close to their chests as to whether he’d be their man.

“The times we’ve chatted it’s been pretty good, I thought the conversations were good,” he said.

“They don’t want to give too much away, I think they have a list management meeting tonight and then just a wait and see.”

Should they select him he could find himself playing in the blue and yellow this weekend – either at AFL level against Collingwood or in the WAFL against Swan Districts.

When asked if he thought he’s ready to step straight into the forward line alongside Oscar Allen and Jake Waterman, Maric said he was more concerned about earning the respect of his teammates.

“It’s tough to say (if I’m ready). That’s up to the coaches and what they think of me and what they expect,” he said.

“I just want to come in and prove myself straight away on the training track.

“You’ve got to earn the respect of your teammate first on the training track and then go from there.”

At 193cm and 84kg, Maric has drawn the interest of 10 clubs including both the Eagles and Fremantle because of his potential.

“I model my game off the likes of Bayley Fritsch type who is that crafty half forward and is very good around goals, but also like a Jeremy Cameron who can get higher up the ground and play in the middle of the ground and have an impact from there,” Maric said.

“And then some of the attributes of (Taylor) Tex Walker – just watching him kick, he’s always been a pretty natural kick. It’s just poetry in motion watching him and that’s my weapon.”
See now why couldn’t Reid have just answered like this

Hard not to be impressed with the kids attitude.

And my favourite quote from him.

On attitude alone he has to be a favourite.

Would love to get Hansen Jr, but Freo will be all over him. Its a shame because they still need KPPs so they should pick Buller and let us take Hansen Jr.

Liked Teal's game too - looks a neat midfielder that can win his own ball with good skills.

From a drafting strategy viewpoint, do we take best available here? Or do we address needs knowing the ND will give us access to an even larger talent pool of better players?

The way that interview reads suggests to me that’s he’s our man.

Great attitude about moving over, knows some of our players and is really determined.

Just heard the Maric interview on SEN. He sounds almost exactly like Jayden Hunt, so expecting good things.

Yep. I’m sold, get him in

Listened to the interview with Haselby and he’s spent not much time in development programs so there’s a fair bit of upside given he sounds like he has the right attitude

PS : There was some real cringeworthy questions from Haselby in that interview

Haselby giving eagles a few sly digs in the questions but Maric brushed them off so I like him even more

Spoke well. I think the lack of development programs and coaches is a real positive given the ability he has already shown at VFL level.

Let’s hope the coaches and development staff can start to provide some positive results

What do we think of Jack Billings? On the outer at St Kilda, but his best games have been very good. Zero Hanger suggesting he’s available at a reasonable price.

Lel @ the suggestions of trading Petch. Posters have correctly identified that we wouldn’t get much for him - fair cop, don’t disagree - but he’s one of the few players on the list with some real points of difference. He’s shown some craft around the ball and I’d like to see how that could continue to develop.

People forget how late Shep bloomed into the player he became. I see enough there to work with in Petch that he shouldn’t be discarded.

There’s plenty to cut from the list before him. Stand by the man.

Will be 28 by start of next year which should put him outside our window i would have thought. Also don’t think he would be cheap enough for us to be interested.

There was a couple minutes of discussions about West Coast generally and Maric specifically on Gettable today (I couldn't see it posted above, although great article and podcast posted previously).
Link is here for the episode.

As a recap for you (if you don't want to bother watching the whole episode):
At about 9 minutes Cal discusses West Coast's pick.
He says Maric is very likely for us at pick 1, but not "an absosulte lock".
He mentions James Trezise, Robert Hansen Jnr and Jack Buller as being linked to us as well.

Apparently Hunter is linked to both Richmond and Essendon.

At 14 minutes and 40 seconds Cal asks Maric's manager, Julian Petracca: "If it is West Coast, that's obviously a move....how does that sit with him, the potential of that?"
To which his manager replies: "Oh, he's happy. Yeah, he doesn't mind. I think even reflecting on it last week with him over a bit of brekkie he's like "I'm just fortunate to be in this position and ready to take the opportunity", so I don't think moving for him is going to be an issue."

Maric seems to be saying all the right things for us to consider selecting him, at least.
Also from Drouin, near my old stomping ground.

Agree but it’s only really top 10 picks in the national draft who have the luxury of telling clubs they dont want to leave their home state. MSD draftees have to take any opportunity.

Not really as clear as the gap Reid has created. There was suggestions that we were considering Ginbey at pick 2 if we couldn’t split it, and Cadman went first because it was GWS with the pick instead of North, which suggests that it was entirely team preference dependent on who was going where.

This year it won’t matter who has the pick, they’re taking Reid, so that comes at a premium imo. Adelaide’s offer for JHF in his draft year would be comparable. Pick 4, F1 (Pick 4), and Melbournes F1 (18) and North turned that down. That’s the sort of realm we’re in. We don’t have to trade and a deal like that should only get us to the table.
At the start of last season (and the end of 2021 for AFL Draft Central’s early top 10) quite a few of the draft watchers on the draft board had Wardlaw, Sheezel and Ashcroft as the top 3 kids in their rankings. That never really changed for most of the draft watchers.

It was the names after those top 3 that changed a lot.

However, there was plenty of discussion about Wardlaw’s hammies, and if a team could draft a potential injury risk player top 3.

But that never saw him drop out of the top 3.

Absolutely, listening to Maric, and the comments from his manager, it is very clear that there is relief at the likelihood of being selected by an AFL club.
The good news is that there is no shadow of doubt about his desire to relocate, and put in the hard yards, to live his dream.

Little rewrite if I may:

"Also don't think he would be tough enough for us to be interested. "

If he wasn't able to toughen up and become an AFL footballer whilst still living under Mummy's pandering in Kew ( Think Dalkeith, for those not familiar with Melbourne demographics ), then the Kew Comets, Scotch College, Oakleigh Chargers boy - ain't super charging his next move into the AFL floodlights, by moving state.

He has always had AFL talent ........ but not the stones to play at that level.

I know some will hate the harsh critique ......... but thats the truth IMO.

Even if he ends having an average season, I’d like to see Jack Williams retained on the list. Going forward (especially as we start be real competitive) we need another proper key forward in the side for not only helping out Oscar but also structurally. Still keen on Maric but having one KPF and multiple tweeners isn’t gonna cut it

First draft rankings from Rookie Me are in

Sent from my iPhone using BigFooty.com

Quality stuff from the crew at Rookie Me don’t have to agree with all of it but it’s a really good snap shot of how different this draft is to last years midfield draft.

If GWS were to offer 4&5 (based on current ladder positions) for Reid then it’s damn tempting…
Could lock in some x-factor like Watson alongside Curtin to shore up our defence, and then pick up the likes of Tholstrup or Moir with next selection.
Go hard on English and Naughton or Taylor through FA and then focus on adding some more midfield talent to continue building around the core duo of Ginbey and Hewitt moving forward.

Without even factoring in all our additional draftees over the next couple years or cellar dwelling, the team could look like this in a few years time:

Bazzo Barrass Duggan
Jones/Hunt Curtin Yeo
Chesser Culley Hough
Tholstrup/Moir Naughton Kelly
Ryan Allen Watson
English Ginbey Hewitt

Bench options: Long, L.Edwards, Petch, Barnett, Burgiel, Sheed, J.Williams

Nice blend of young guns like Ginbey, Hewitt, Culley, Watson, Curtin, Hough and Long coming through and hopefully stepping up in time for veterans like Barrass, Allen, Naughton, English, Yeo, Duggan, Kelly etc to push hard for a flag before hanging up the boots.

It really is remarkable how quickly a list can be completely transformed and honestly I find these rebuild periods (as horrifying as this one is!) to be as exciting as successful periods. Can’t wait to see the next competitive side and their own identity to emerge.

Final step is a good run of injuries of course but maybe that’s the part that isn’t realistic 😂
