Goater pick

Hi Monocle.

I see how the cards fell in the Big Footy Phantom Draft you picked Goater with our first after the two top WA mids were gone.

If it pans out that way Im sure we can lure MJ away from the Saints in a year or two.

Goater sounds like a good pick. What made him stand out from others around this pick? His athletic traits and kicking certainly follow Eagles draft guidelines.

On our draft matrix I just hope we have increased the value of being competitive and putting the head over the ball and getting it. That takes courage and hardness which we sorely need.

Speaking of club errors, it seems that Erasmus wasn't in our academy because his parents didn't read the email from the club in time, not because the club screwed up. Moot point as we couldn't have matched a first round selection but it's good to know it wasn't the club.

Source is an interview with Erasmus in today's West.
I mean, I've heard of a phone call.

Might be more involved than just missing an email. Monocle posted this earlier:

My understanding of the situation, now after have been given some more information by someone very close to the matter, is that the Club tried but neither his family ( parents ) or he were keen to commit to football over cricket.
So he didn't sign on for the NGA.

All jokes aside, why wouldn't you keep your kid's options open if given the chance?

"Nah mate, you're going to be a cricketer, don't waste your time going to an hour training session once every 3 months to help get your name out there for a chance at another career path."

South. Africans.

It never should have come to this.

If it was going to cause this much of an issue with Brander where he wants nothing to do with the club then that's on the bloody club for either having no plan, or poisoning the well with one of their own. Total failure.

How you can turn a kid draftee who's a massive eagles fan into a jaded player that wants nothing to do with the club 4 years later is beyond me.

At the very least, IF there was an inkling Brander was heading in this direction the club should have traded him in the Kelly deal. Or offloaded him LAST year even, when he might've been worth something. Hell, we've all been speculating for a couple years now that Brander "Would be pissed off" and that it's only a matter of time before he leaves. And this is us, with no ties to the club at all.

Instead they've ran a first round draft pick into the ground will criminally bad development, had the ******* president go on radio and publicly show how much we don't rate him to alleviate any doubt whatsoever about his trade value, then eventually he walks out the door for nothing. Brander and his manager wanting out is fine, but how did we get him to that point?

How ever which way you spin it, this has been horrible list management and player development from day 1 until now.
A symptom of a poor organization leading to a bad year that fished up in a hole. The first game of the year speaks volumes. There was (is) something wrong.

I have to say, the highlights of Goater remind me of Yeo. Haven't seen him in a full game tho.

Didn’t we win the first game of the year?

EastPete does have a point even if he might have got it confused with the Bulldogs game, we had to come from behind in the last quarter to beat Gold Coast at home in round 1.
In isolation it seemed okay because the late goal flurry papered over the cracks, but when viewed with the whole season it was symptomatic of our poor attitude to even let it get that bad to begin with.

I'm just relieved Darling forgot how to take a chest mark in the square in the last minute of the grand final, and not earlier in the year....There would have been no coming back from that.

I was referring to the Dogs game. I was there ,,,very frustrating. We should have won that. There was obviously something wrong.

That game should have started alarm bells ringing. The way the Dogs ran over us at the start of the last quarter set the template for other teams for the season: just wait until the Eagles feel they have done enough OR are tired, then out run them.

Ah the dogs game, where the mercurial Jamie Cripps managed to kick it into the man on the mark, 15m out, directly in front. Would have gone 3 goals up, cost all our momentum

A passage of play that was indicative of our whole season really

Point was that we really should've won that Dogs game (you'd expect an experienced fwd to kick that goal 100/100 times)....so things didn't look that bad early on.

2 weeks later the 2nd half of the Saints game was when my alarm bells started going off

My first IRL game for the year was that dogs game. Blame me, i jinx'd them. - Was also at the saints game 2 weeks later.....
All my fault.
