If you're smart, when you at the bottom of the ladder you do a number of things.

1. You use the carry over clause in the 95% rule where you underspend and bank a bit for later.
2. You front end your good young talent a bit. Give them 4-5 year contracts with more money up front and less later when your list is improving. You do this in conjunction with an investment advisor who engages with the young guys and helps set them up for the future. This has the added advantage of making the club and player more invested with each other and therefore less likely to split up at the end of the contract.
3. You offer realistic rather than silly money to the old guys coming out of contract. If they chuck a wobbly, so be it. Look at the success Geelong are having. They have an old list, but it's not an overpaid, injury ridden, under-performing group a pensioners like ours. And that has allowed them to bring in young guns as well. Note that they reportedly offer guys like Selwood and Danger a lot less than we pay guys like Shuey and Gaff.

As a general rule it is pretty obvious that long term deals for old guys might work for the first couple of years but then become a liability.

New rule - If a club comes with a stupid offer for a player that you can either match or let player walk... let 'em go. The clue is in the term 'stupid offer'.
Examples - Carlton for Gov, North for Gaff, Adelaide to North for the #1 draft pick (JHF).
Front ending has its problems as well.

Year 1 $600k
Year 2 $600k
Year 3 $600k
Year 4 $400k
Year 5 $400k

At year 4, player is 'pissed' that they are underpaid, rather than looking at the average. Also used to the higher coin.

I'm hearing Taranto to Tigers and Hopper the cats.
I will be interested to see what the Cats picks will be worth. They have their first 3 round picks which will be worth something like 18, 36 and 54 prior to compo and bids plus Carlton's R3 and Brisbane R3.

We all know what Steven Wells says these about these picks - not worth very much.

So would 18 get Hopper done? probably not. And the likelihood of bundling up later picks for Bruhn!! Perhaps we should just go to GWS with 26 for Bruhn. I think he is a better option that Robertson which I feel 38 is his value.

If Bruhn was in fact not sold on Geelong then this would be a great bit of business. Sadly don’t think it’ll be so but we can hope

There are changes happening in that dept.

Do these "changes" you speak of involve moving on the people in charge of their departments? Or is it much like our on field changes where we keep on people with tenure irrespective of how they perform and drop the guys on the periphery?

Ie

In: Current Fitness boss
Out: Work experience kid

Also free agency.

Clubs want to pay players enough in their final contract year to ensure they are a RFA rather than UFA.

So it's often a larger front year, lean middle years, larger final year.

I hope we learnt that once you win one that's when you need to ramp it up not be happy with 1.

Or win one then go the tank even harder next time. Flag to spoon in a year style

If this is relating to flags - that’s what we did, and those are the moves people are crucifying us for now.

Signed Gov and Gaff off AA years, went in for TK, extended Shep etc etc.

We went all in for more flags, it didn’t work. We didn’t cruise by and hope for the best, we pushed the chips in the middle on our high end talent and one high end recruit.

Didn’t work. Ah well. New challenge coming up.

That's why you have to do it smart.
Engage the player with an independent financial team. Encourage player to buy a house rather than a Ferrari. and so on

Surely with all the retirements and money freed coming out ARE WE GOING TO LAND A BIG FISH?

If I don't see us land one big fish in the next 4 years I'll be pissed.

By big fish I mean a Chris Judd/Ablett like player. Not like laughable kelly as OK as he is

Seriously
JK retired $$$
Nic Nat retiring soon $$$$
Shuey also gone soon $$$$$
Gaff shipped $$$$$$$$
Darling $$$$$$$$$$$$$
Hurn $$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$
Redden $$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$

Gov to the forwardline

Isn't that just another Land of the giants gameplan again? Darling, Allen and Gov.

Ideally the 2nd string ruckman rests in the forward line when not rucking (and if they are a reasonable forward).

For all of Nic Nats positives (which may be in the past) it's always created a headache with the 2nd string ruckman having to do more than a minor chop out.

The notion of Gov going forward was also to use him as the back up ruck not as a permanent forward

Or it was floated as an option in the very unlikely scenario of Darling being traded

Close, Darling to the midfield

*It was raised as a possibility simply as a 2nd ruck option given the rawness of our existing options and that it opens up a door down back for someone like Bazzo or Edwards

It's very easy looking in the rear vision. Chesser was actually my choice over the others floated although I have a soft spot for Matty Johnson. To be fair, unless u picked a SA or WA kid, then a couple years off footy was pretty standard.
WC lacks leg speed & he offers that along with foot skills. And a beaut kid to boot.
Joyce was a late pick - hard to call that a mistake.
From the few glimpses I have seen of Chesser he looks like a really skilled, clean ball user. Given the passion and initiative he showed driving over in the pre-season, I reckon we've got a gem there. I for one am very happy with this choice!

That's also a no for me. Collecting average players in the midfield generally sends you backwards.
Fiorini is 24 and he averages 30+ possessions a game (average 100+ afl fantasy). How can an average player accumulate 30 possesions? That would be like saying they are Priddas/Sheed average which isn't too bad.

If he enters the club he automatically becomes our #1 mid. Yeo being injured all the time, Shuey injured all the time. Overtakes Redden and Kelly due to him being hard tagged.

Fiorini can lead out Mid of the next generation. I was going to say sheed but he is 27.

Are you serious? There's lots of players who can get 30 every week and they're spuds. They're called possession monkeys. The more they get the ball, the more they hurt you.

Sam Gilbey broke his leg over the weekend, hopefully its not as bad as it looked..
And he recovers well and doesnt lose his leg speed
I see us picking him later as he will slide. Going interstate and starting rehab is hardly a good thing. I’d be ok with our pick 38 R3

He doesn’t average 30+ at AFL level
