Yeah, that's a good point. I was just thinking that we're all pinning our hopes on drafting a gun mid at pick 3, but that never worked for us last time around.
There's no guarantees. But we should get some high picks over the next few seasons too. Out of that lot, I hope we can find our Walsh/Oliver/Petracca etc.

He was good enough to hold down a best 22 spot for most of the year and play 200 games. No way was he what you want with a top pick, but he wasn't a Richard Tambling level bust.
Better players than Masten after #3:

#9 McEvoy
#10 Danger
#12 Cyril
#15 Robbie Tarrant
#17 Harry Taylor
#18 Alex Rance
#19 Callan Ward
#35 Sam Reid
#40 Mayne
#42 Jack Steven
#43 Easton Wood
#54 Cale Hooker
#75 Tex Walker

Realistically, anyone after Cyril is not in the conversation of a top 3 pick. It just happens, all those players in the top 5 convo between 3-8 were all spuds. Masto no a bad choice because back then Danger and Cyril were in 5 - 10 convo and not really in top 5 convo.

So the sacking of Rutten by the drug rats has me thinking that we will have company at the bottom of the ladder next year. As a club, Essendon look like a cluster flock. In comparison to WCE, they make us look good.

Interesting that Simpson in his presser stated Geelong were fitter and faster than us. I hope this is a direct criticism on our S&C team, our list management team and our game strategy team. If so we are at the bottom and can continue the rebuild in what I call year 2. If not, our rebuild will likely start at the end of 2023 with a new coach.

seriously? Get a grip mate.

we have played in four grand finals and won two flags since Essendon last won a final.

I am hoping Essendon appoint Ross Lyon to replace Rutten. It would give the rest of the AFL even more to dislike at Tullermarine
I didn't hear it, but my mate said Lyon was on radio today ripping apart Bombers off field team and claiming they had no A Graders. Not the words of a man who wants to coach there

The President, Dickhead Barham, in his presser said that the Board thought that they needed an experienced coach not a rookie coach, moving forward.

They need to define ‘experienced’

So looking at the long line of experienced coaches sitting on the sidelines just waiting for a call - nah, it’s a very short list.

Buckley already stated not interested.
Lyon obviously not interested.
Cameron staying in Sydney (apparently)

Then you have the ‘experienced but failed’ group. Noble, Leppitsch, Richardson, Hird, the lesser Scott,

A few assistant coaches have a winning Covid coaching record after this year.

Rutten’s free.

All roads lead to Hird.

That pick swap was a great bit of business last year. Moved down two spot in rnd one, still got our man and picked up a pretty good second round selection. I guess Port assumed it would be between pick 32-36
