And for pick 32, which was a steal. He dominated the championships, and then went back to East Freo and dominated (see below) so it was well known he was a gem.He is the one that... sadly..... got away.

Goal kicking mids are so rare, he also has good agility, speed and is a beautiful kick. I would've tried everything on draft night to pick swap to try and get him after he went past pick 25.

So that pick 31 which we including in the Kelly trade and i was crying about all offseason....
Would that have been able to snag Rivers, or would it have been pushed back to about 35 and we would've missed him anyway?
I guess if we were really that into him, the club could've wheeled and dealed with a package or future picks to get up the draft order to get him.
Excluding the gap of no Willie (geez with the improvement of Ryan, having those two guys swapping in and out if the middle and forward would be so sweet) I think the Eagles really lacked that defensive winger, dare I say Masten role, just gut running, blocking up holes. The lack of pressure coming into the defensive 50 was really noticeable as well as the lack of an easy option down the line, attacking from the defensive 50.
Die hard Eagles fan and he would have been a lifer for us.
Rivers looks like an absolute gun. His class and poise stands out like dogs balls in Demons colours. He’s already had practically match winning games. Can’t believe they got him so cheap. And for pick 32, which was a steal. He dominated the championships, and then went back to East Freo and dominated (see below) so it was well known he was a gem.

It’s hard to trace everything back but my understanding is that pick went to Geelong as part of the Kelly trade and then on to GC so they could get Sharp. And then Geelong got a pick upgrade this year which will help them get Cameron. We had pick # 27 the Sydney pick we got for being good guys the year before.
He went at # 32 ............ he would have been ours ............. had we retained the pick.
You've trotted that line out before but have never been able to verify there's any truth in it.Good cop bad cop won us the QF in 2018. Simmo with the "if we lose at least we get a second chance" with Mitchell "if we lose this final we wont win the flag."
You've trotted that line out before but have never been able to verify there's any truth in it.
Unless you can, I'm calling BS again.
Well we will just have to wait and see how much of a fan he is?
Remember, the kid is at Melbourne, a club with no heart, poor culture and little direction.
If we aren't into him big time to trade back next year we are idiots. Non of this "we respect clubs with contracted players" blah fricken blah.
Get in his ear and put an offer to him he can't refuse. You wait another 4 years we'll be paying another Kelly ransom.
PS: On a side note, 'come on GWS, bend those Cats flogs over and get what Cameron is worth'.
Would love to see it then.I think it's in the 2018 highlights DVD. I definitely remember seeing/reading it somewhere (hopefully not just on these forums haha)
BTW I'm in the Premiership or Bust side of the Kelly trade debate. Up the Coasters!!!
To be fair Monocle, I believe the person to blame for choosing Ainsworth would be Obrien, if my memory serves me correctly alot of the recruitment team were saying Worpel on draft night.BOND 007 you are a good and loyal servant of the Club and stick to backing up and supporting your mates in the recruiting team, no matter what.
That’s a noble attribute and I mean that genuinely.
However you guys are ultimately judged by your drafting decisions and given they are made in a public forum, they are always going to draw commentary.
Yes I think Constable is a better player than Ainsworth - it’s a opinion, no more no less.
I may well be in the minority but I still am struggling to see the output from Ainsworth that I believe the two players I mentioned have shown.
Obviously you and the team see otherwise.
That doesn’t stop us plebs from voicing our opinions.
I would love to be proved wrong and for Ainsworth to become a regular and productive AFL player.
I would be thrilled if I had stuffed up my original and steadfast assessment of Ainsworth , as I did with Ryan who I thought wouldn’t make it at the next level.
I am sure you guys do your own retrospective draft analysis one, two and five years after the event to reassess what you missed, what you didn’t see at the time of the draft.
That, I am sure is an interesting exercise.
Every recruiter and talent scout has hits and misses, that’s a given.
After all it is a dark science.
Football supporters are parochial and passionate by nature and as such their / our criticism of some picks is done, not because we get a buzz out of sh*t caning you guys, rather it’s done because we want the best for our Mighty Club.
Some of us also sink some serious coin, every year into the Club, so it’s a commitment by us than runs deeper and beyond just some opinions.
Just because the recruiting team are paid professionals, entrusted by the Clubs Management to pick the best players that they think are available.
That doesn’t squash our right to voice our opinions, be they positive or negative.
Yes we / I critique your work, I don’t apologise for that.
I would think that’s expected by the team. Whenever you operate in the public domaine you will be under the spotlight.
All sports, around the world has that intrinsic element to it, as people vicariously live through their teams fortunes.
It’s part of the passion that comes with the game itself.
Yes at times it is illogical, highly emotive, and very insular.
So with that said may I wish you guys all the best in the forthcoming trade and draft season.
You guys have a difficult task, as this drafts preparation and year of talent assessment has been like no other previously.
If I may be so bold as to put out a Christmas Stocking:
May I ask, can you guys get us a good solid B grade inside / outside midfielder in the draft.
You guys hold the Clubs future in your hands.
Do us proud .
To be fair to Bubba he hasnt been played in his preferred position. When he is then we can properly compare the twoNo doubt he is struggling to crack the side, hence the several articles where he is linked as a likely trade. Getting concussed in his match against WC this year wouldn't have helped his cause either.
Ironically the only stats Ainsworth has him covered for is disposal efficiency and clangers

edit - and 1%, turnovers and (not insignificantly) an extra 10% time on ground, on average.
Statement: Runners revealed for 2020 Colgate Grand Final Sprint - https://www.afl.com.au/news/520498
J Clark is in the Sprint implies he will not be in the 22 + 4 emergencies of the GF.
That is a strong signal of showing he is definitely leaving Geelong??!!
