Coventry , Lockett to be replaced by Lloyd and ?? for Dons games at Etihad

Essendon is starting to act like the Kangawhos. Their demise to the rank of a third tier club has happened sooner than I expected.
Must hurt getting beat twice by a 3rd tier club! :thumbsu:

One end should be (permanently) Lloyd, one end Reiwoldt upon retirement IMHO.

Dunno why you'd name ends after guys who never played at a ground. Was a way for the Dome to ingratiate itself with the game I spose.

While I don't care who the ends are named after, it does seem a bit silly as the names are more than just ceremonial - they're practical too. If you listen to a match on the rdaio, to know that they are kicking towards the coventry or lockett end helps you form a picture of the match. Then there is the issue of finding your mates at the ground - minor inconvenience I know, but still an inconvenience.

Similarly that's why the Barwon River end at KP isn't named to honour the river, nor is the Punt Road End at the G named to honour a bit of bitumen.

Re: The "Lloyd" end - WTF?

It's our home ground for our home games. We'll do as we please. Thankyou for your concern.

It's not your home ground actually. It's a stadium you rent to play some games of football at. There will be rules as to what you can do with it when you use it.

I'm not sure of the details of actual ownership, but I know that Channel 7 and the AFL would have had some say in how the new owners could treat the facility. The AFL were the ones who originally called the ends Lockett/Coventry. Probably had very good reasons for that decision. I also expect they would have told the new ground owners what 'naming rights' they could sell (EG: the stadium name) and what they could not. For example, I'll bet they can't call it 'The Channel Nine Stadium', no matter how much Eddie pays.

If the Ground owners are allowed to make the changes suggested here, my respect for the AFL plummets even further.

You are completely incorrect on two points:

1. Etihad is the official hone ground of the Esendon fc.

2. The AFL have no say in the naming rights of the stadium. They are actually dead against it being called Etihad stadium due to their sponsorship agreement with QANTAS but they had no say in the matter. Colonial (commonwealth bank) made a killing when they onsold the naming rights and since then Telstra has sold the rights to ES on lease agreement. The AFL have nothing to do with this.

stupid idea

do we expect commentators and opposition fans to refer to them as "the lloyd" end, etc

if so that is very arrogant of the club

Valid point about blokes who never played at the ground I suppose, but Lloyd would only hold the slightest interest for only Bombers supporters.

It's a horrible precedent. You'll end up changing the names every 6 years.

I've never heard a commentator or any other person for that matter, refer to then ends as the Coventry and Lockett end. I go to the Dome atleast 10 times per season and i wouldn't have the faintest idea which end is the Lockett end and which is the Coventry end.

I very seldom listen to games on the radio and i guess they may use it as a reference for that but i don't think it would make much a difference. The commentators on the radio will probably say something like "Geelong are kicking to the Lockett end or Lloyd end for you Essendon supporters" during the Essendon game.

I would not have the faintest clue which end is the Coventry end and which end is the Lockett end. I bet you in six months time I will know which one the Lloyd end is though ;)

How many goals did Coventry kick at the Coventry end? How many goals did Lockett kick at the Lockett end? Which end is which? In a symmetrical stadium with a roof, who really cares which end is which?
