Crows join race for Cloke

We won't get Cloke he wouldn't come here. Tippett will stay. When we re-signed him in 09 he signed just before the finals. He will take a pay cut just like I think alot of our players are doing to keep the group together. Think Geelong and Collingwood. I think he'll sign a 3 year contract he'll be 28 then. He'll go be back home and then Sam Day will hit his peak that time, he'll be 21, 22. Everything will workout for the best in the end of the day. Everyone needs to just chill.

No, Tippett signed on the day of our B&F count, or at least that was when it was announced, so it can't have been before finals and at the time he still had a year to run on his contract.

I was getting quite confident he would stay until this, this suggests that we are at least a little bit worried that he will go. If he did chose to go, Cloke would be as good a replacement as we could hope for considering he would come free through free agency and we would be receiving compensation for Kurt as well.

Did anyone else see VB's comment in the "Matter of trust" article?

"I know 'Tippo' is thoroughly enjoying himself at the moment, with the environment we've got at the footy club and I've got every confidence that he'll want to be apart of us moving forward."

I would've preferred the author split this into "a part" rather than "apart". Stupid words that can have two totally opposite meanings if misspelt.

I'd be very happy with getting Cloke if Tippett leaves, and if we can pay him considerably less than he's asking for at Collingwood, and give him a shorter contract that he's asking for from Collingwood.

That's a few if's though. Realistically I doubt it will happen, and I still believe Tippett will stay.
Was thinking something similar, except he is playing for a team with premiership credentials, and wants more money. He wont get more money in Adelaide.

Umm.. you do realise that "Restricted Free Agent" means that Collingwood retain him if they're willing to match the salary offered by the club doing the poaching? Thus, we have no option but to offer him more than they're prepared to match.

EDIT: In Cloke's context, Collingwood are apparently prepared to offer him $800k for 4 years. Our starting point has to be north of there, if we're serious about recruiting him. Personally, I don't think he's worth that sort of money.

They have to be willing to retain him. If he doesn't want to play for them, do you think they're going to be happy to throw $800K at him? If they suspect he'll turn in the same calibre of performances for them in the next few years as he has this year, they'll probably be glad to see the back of him.

I agree he's not worth more than $800k/year for four years.

If you want to get him under the Restricted Free Agency rules, then that's what you have to go by. If you want to pay him less than Collingwood, then A) he & his father will laugh in your face and tell you not to be stupid, and B) you'd have to trade for him instead of poaching him as an RFA.

Of course, if you want to poach him. I'm talking about trading for him.

As for his father telling him not to be stupid, that was why I was saying it would only happen if there had been a falling out between him and Collingwood.

Basically there would need to be a lot of hypotheticals go a certain way, and I suspect all of them will go the other way.

There is no way he'll go anywhere for less than what Collingwood are offering. His Dad/Manager is just being a jerk, screwing Collingwood around, trying to milk even more out of them. The only reason any other teams are in the race is because they're all prepared to offer more $$$. The chances of him going to a team prepared to offer less (via trade) are completely non-existent.

I can't wait til he re-signs, gonna make a shit load of people look like complete idiots.

Bit sanctimonious to call people complete idiots for thinking a guy who is holding out on the club when everyone else has re-signed might be planning on leaving. Hell even the club itself has been forced to scout out a replacement option...

Apologies I haven't read the whole thread but I feel slightly grubby even posting in here as I reckon Cloke is a mouth-breather like his Dad - it would be hard to muster any enthusiasm for him in the tricolours.

But I guess that is the wonder of free agency, today's Collingwood d******* is tomorrow's AFC marquee signing.

:(

I'd rather back Jenkins in than add another underperforming spud.
Jenkins is still (@ least) two years off being at Cloak or Tippets level are you are prepared to wait that long to be a contender. Our structure depends on Kurt without him we need the likes of Cloke.

My comment was in relation to going after Dawes. I take it your one of the few Dawes fans out there.

Free Agency is complete crap, the AFL are dickheads for introducing it.
To be fair they really had no choice. It was only a matter of time before a player or AFLPA took the AFL to court and they would have won easily. Every sport has free agency just be greatful that AFL's version of it is one of the most restrictive in sports.
