Speaking of U19s - how many clubs in D3 have got an U19 team? It's generally considered an important part of the recruitment process, and there aren't too many teams in the top grades that don't have at least an affiliation with an unders team.

Spoon fed school affiliated sides find this much easier, hence the reason they're usually much stronger. I doubt many inner suburban District sides have fielded 19's for a while...

kew has fielded an under 19 side the last two years.....but seem to be struggling with numbers this year.....however its seems that a lot of the younger ones turn up with just a few weeks to go till the season starts from the past couple of years.

As I understand it UHSVU have affiliated themselves with a junior club in Kensington. Could precipitate a return to higher leagues?

Also of interest and posted on the D4 thread:

"At the VAFA members meeting last night all clubs were informed that the season WILL start on 14th April. It's up to the clubs to inform their players and it's up to the VAFA to worry about the rain falling.

Spy1 is dead right... Situations like this is where the VAFA Executive (as of last nights meeting now to be referred to as Board) earn their keep. There are all sorts of options available to the association. It may require changing the fixtures a little but the point they wanted to stress is start preparing for season 2007 because it's just over a month away.:thumbsu:"

Would be great if this could be confirmed!

Sounds fantastic Red Gum, but it's the councils who decide whether we can play on the grounds, not the VAFA.

Re: Drought! - Any Clubs/Grounds in danger?
Guys,

Four of the big councils and their legal eagles met today( Moreland, Stonnigton, Borrondorra and Bayside). Bad news as cancelling the whole season was seriously discussed as even heaps of rain won't solve the problem as most of the grounds have no grass. Also they are very keen to protect turf wickets as they represent a significant investment and giving footy the winter off would be prudent( legally). Expect an announcement soon that will ban all games this season in these areas.

It must be remebered that it is the councils who will decide not the VAFA( even given a number of non-council grounds), so their statements are really quite meaningless.

Prepare for a winter without footy and join up with your AFL club now!

Taken from another "BigFooty" thread, not a good sign!!

there are so many issues that come with this now.

The VAFA seem very unorganised and thats having a massive effect on every club.

So now what do clubs do go and search for other grounds in there area, this to me seems pointless, and revenue and club status is going to suffer so much.

And what will players do coming into the comp, and having to play on other grounds which can have a bad effect on how the comp is valued.

Also how are teams going to afford training facilities (lights) and ground facilities????

i would doubt footy will go ahead this year.

The VAFA has come out and stated numerous times that season will start on the 14th April. Including Monday night at the members meeting. How more clear do they have to be? It’s the job of the club member to ensure this message is spread.

It’s only idiots like you touting off about something you know nothing about. There is no way there will be no football this year, there is too much money at stake. Clubs have insurance and councils have insurance, there will be just some stricter guidelines to ensure the correct duty of care. There may be a bit of shuffling around at the start of the year but there is one thing for sure that come April 14th it will be play ball.

So go back to your water restrictions thread and start as many rumours as you want but lets leave this thread to talking about what matters, footy.

My Predictions for 2007

West Brunswick – Bill bounce back strong, Bill is the key
Kew – Merger will ensure they return to winning ways of 2004/05
La Trobe – Will be keen to bounce back after demotion
Powerhouse – Will continue their momentum and have again recruited well
Ivanhoe – Will also be keen to bounce back after demotion
Hawthorn – Will be competitive but the jump will be a bit too much this year
Monash – Can’t see any improvement despite new coach
Elsternwick – Big Sliders No 1 have lost too many good players
Swinburne – No improvement of last year
Old Westbourne – Big Sliders No 2 2006 coach has gone to Richmond Centrals and has taken key players; look to Richmond to be the big improves in 07 could even mean D3 in 08

Not sure if your talking reserves or not here because OW coach from 06 is coaching again in 07. The reserves coach has gone to Richmond. But can you inform us on which key players have gone with him?

I agree that there will be football this year, there is too much at stake to not run the competition. There does seem to be some threat of juggling grounds, etc but that should be sorted out once the rain (hopefully) begins to fall.

Can't say that I agree with your predictions though, from all accounts Kew won't be that flash, despite the merger and Elsternwick have managed to pick up a few newies. Powerhouse have reportedly had up to 60 at training but there's no guarantee they've added good players...

What accounts are those - re: Kew

Danny Hickey was Reserves coach at Old Westbourne last year and has come over to Richmond Centrals as senior coach for 2007. He is doing a terrific job and has the respect of everyone at the club. In terms of players coming across from Westbourne though; at this stage there is only one player and that is Danny's son.

We are very positive about the forthcoming season at the Centrals, but to get up to D3 by 2008 would be beyond our wildest dreams. Remember we only won 1 game (reserves) all season in 2006! We've managed to stick together though and staying positive for what should be an interesting season.:)

Good luck to you guys.

Danny Hickey obviously enjoys a challenge

You've put all the new teams in a big group between 3 and 6? That would be unlikely I'd suggest. Also many of your predictions are predicated on false premises. I'm also in the dark and probably operating blind but as of right now I would suggest:

Top 4 (no order):
WB
(I'm biased but realistically we should expect to have a good year after retaining most players and having hopefully enough depth to cover our losses)
LaTrobe
(Should be good enough from all reports to cause a stir. Will have to ride out the dips in numbers over Uni holidays and that may de-rail their momentum at key times in the season.)
Wicks
(Still not convinced they'll fall as far a some are suggesting. A strong home ground advantage and a very determined mindset will see them up there again even if they're not as strong as 06)
OW
(From the sound of recent posts reacting to Collins' predictions the spirit is still in OW and they showed good fight last year to stay with the top four to the very end.)

Middle:
Kew
(Merger can do no harm but neither is it the panacea for their ills. They were too far out of touch with the lead group last year for a few blokes to make the difference but will improve on 06)
Powerhouse
(Revved up after being promoted from the sound of things and if they're getting big numbers on the track they may have depth at least even if they don't have too many stars.)
Monash
(Won't challenge the top teams but will do enough to stay clear of the cellar. Probably be on the wrong side of a fair gap between the top 5 and the rest)
Ivanhoe
(Will need to work hard given the exodus in post season and the demoralisation of the drop but must still have enough handy players to stop the rot and dig their heels in before falling again.)

Relegated:

Hawthorn
(The jump will be too much and they won't have the depth to cover for everyone smashing them up to vent the hatred that apparently is universally held toward the club)

Swinburne
(Struggled last year and were lucky to have UHS and StMary's behind them. I think the teams coming in are stronger than the ones that went down and I don't think Swines can improve enough to avoid falling back.)

JMHO

Wouldn't have thought too many Ivanhoe blokes would have left for Eltham with the old coach however I did hear that the runner is considering his options.

Not sure what you are getting at Bloods, Kew had 72 on the track on wednesday and have recruited fairly well. They will be an entirely different side to last year.

they'd want to be,because last year they were $hit

And what are your qualifications to back up this statement you tool.
They played 61 guys through the seniors, made no less than 5 changes per week, and lost their coach midway through the year, but still managed equal 6th.

This year over 100 guys on the track at different times, 2 clubs to pick players from, good recruits frOm the SFL and the ability to train on decent grounds since december last year.

Cut your mullet off goose.

I think not

Where did I say everyone has come across?. They have had over 100 players on the track, some recruits form other SFL clubs, and 2 clubs to pick from. Of course you are not going to get every player that played last year, you tell me any club in any competition that keeps every player that played lsat year??

lets see if i can back up my statement..hmmmmmm, last year in D3 the top 5 teams were streets ahead of the bottom 5, add to this that St Marys & UHS would of struggled in D4, so in reality Kew were horrible last year, when i looked up their results i missed the foot note with the sob story about having to make 5 changed every week..sniff sniff......for what it is worth last year South Melb had so many injuries they could only get about 20 blokes how could through training in the second half of the year, & they happened to win the flag*, so pull your head tool, accept last year you were $$hit & do something about this year Moron.

Time will tell. Maybe you can bring your dozen pies, your 12 cokes and your fat guts and head and watch the improvement this year, cause you strike me as a bloke who doesn't play, could never play and just sits on the fence taking potshots. No heart moron.

When you said they have 2 clubs to pick from.

100 blokes on the track? Hope you have a lot of footy's

Have you merged the training footballs as well?
